Default 6mo post heart surgery update

    Another Happy update!

Skyler had his 6 mo post-heart surgery appointment yesterday. It was actually 7.5 months. His heart valves are doing great - no regurgitation or stenosis (worth worrying about). It was really neat to see the echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) with a great view where you could see both the native pulmonary valve working right next to a mechanical valve ? and you could see the leaflets moving and everything of both valves. For the first time he actually watched (the video machine was broken) and thought it was really cool!
Anyway, Skyler was to wear a blood pressure monitor for 24h post appointment to see what his blood pressure was like (it was a little high at the appointment), and determine whether he could come off his blood pressure meds that he?s been on since surgery. Don?t know how that went since he?s at his mom?s house this week.
He also has some issues with his voice ? which is still hoarse since the surgery. The cardiologist suggested leaving it because we know it?s a result of surgery and that ENT doctors tend to go a bit overboard with appointments and surgery in his opinion. So we?re going to leave it for now and hope his voice improves with time.
Next appointment? 6 months-ish. It looks like the only thing we are mildly concerned about at this stage is the possibility of his aortic arch expanding over time? but that could easily be decades if at all!

    The most exciting things are:
    - he?s gained 14lbs since his surgery! He?s always been skinny as a rail (counting ribs, outie belly button skinny), but now he is skinny, but with some muscle and fat on him! He now has an innie belly button, and he doesn?t fit in the skinniest pants in the store (that was a shock)! 7 months ago he weighed 67 pounds. Yesterday he weighed 81! He?s only grown an inch, though, and he?s 4?10?, so you can just imagine how much healthy weight he?s put on!
    - he is way more physical now, riding his bike, running, biking, playing street hockey, and he doesn?t get out of breath constantly ? and his gym grade went up!

This is such great news! I'm glad he is putting on healthy weight and very excited for him that he's able to be more active.

That's great that he's doing so well. It surprises me that his gym grade was affected by his heart condition. You would think they would take that into account. Yay for gaining healthy weight! Isaiah's been putting on some weight too. He's no longer the skinniest kid in the family.

I think that his gyn grade went up due to a change in attitude, actually. He always used to give up super easily because "he had a heart condition". Now, he's been told that he doesn't have any limitations and he is "normal". His teachers have been told too. So with no room for excuses he's stepped up and realized that he CAN do it, and that he ENJOYS doing it. This attitude is starting to change over to his other activities and classes too, which is equally, if not MORE, wonderful.

This kid has been relying on excuses for so long, and now they have been removed. It's been tough, but he's starting to realize that he is NORMAL, and that NORMAL IS GOOD! Special is fun at times, but definitely pays a toll on self confidence when you have an excuse for not doing things...

Thanks for the update on Isaiah - I am always worried about asking. I'm glad he's home and that you have the possibility of getting 24h care for helping him. It must really help him to be back at home as well - back with his family is HUGE. Gaining weight is huge.

Are you at a point where you can go back to work? How is being a SAHM?

Just returned from a family visit after the arrival of a new baby. Skyler (13) LOVES babies and was thrilled to see his new brother at birth and announce the gender to the world.

He also got to ride on his uncle's motorcycle which was a thrill too.
