Introduction

This is my second time having a lodge and I want to make better use of it this time. I am hoping to write more and at the end print it off to save.

I am Melynda and I am 25. I married my best friend Mike (33) 3 years ago in February. Here is a picture of us taken yesterday at our friend's wedding. Please excuse the size - I did something in photobucket a year or so ago and now I can't change the size of my pics.

I am a SAHM to Alexandra Nora born March 22, 2007. She is such an amazing girl. I am in love with her and so amazed with the person she is becoming. Her birth and life since then has changed me so much and she has really helped me grow as a mother.

I have been surrounded by ncb for all of my life. My first memory is of taking the first bath with my newborn sister after she had been born at home. A couple of my mom's friends also had homebirths and when we were kids, we would play 'homebirth'.

I became more invested in ncb when I was at the birth of my friend's first daughter. It was an amazing experience to be there and to see the power a woman's body has. It was a very emotional experience - I would get teary everytime she had a contraction and at one point I broke down and cried. I love being at births and have been able to attend the birth of my nephew last year too.

Alexandra's Birth Story

I have spent a lot of time reflecting on Alexandra's birth. It really humbled me and has effected this pregnancy profoundly.

This is copy and pasted - so beware it is long.

I went into labour Tuesday night after eating some spicy food. My husband and I had heard that spicy food can induce labour, and I was feeling like it was time to get this thing going. In hindsight, I don’t recommend this because for the first two hours I felt like the food wasn’t agreeing with me, so I wasn’t sure if I was having contractions or if it was just the food causing bowel discomfort. I timed the contractions and found that they were coming every 10 minutes. We decided that this really was labour, and I decided to call my parents because there was a big dump of snow coming and they had about a 45 minute drive. I also called Jane my midwife and she told me to rest and to call her when the intensity and frequency increased.

I was able to sleep between contractions until 3 am, when things started getting uncomfortable. At this time I got into the tub, which was heavenly. My contractions got closer together and we called my midwife again. She said that I was doing well but probably still had along ways to go and to keep resting. My contractions slowed down to 5 minutes apart again. Jane came over around 10am Wednesday morning and checked me, I was 3 cm dilated and very thin. This really excited me because I was just hoping that my cervix had thinned. Jane said my cervix was like saran wrap, so we felt that things would begin to move along very soon. The baby wasn’t in the best position so she had me lay on my right side with my leg over the other. In this position the pressure in my cervix was very intense.

My contractions were getting stronger and stronger, but they were still approximately 5 minutes apart. Unfortunately I hadn’t been able to keep any food down, so I was starving. I went and had lunch but that made my contractions slow down again. I found that I laboured best in my room with just my mom or husband, so I retreated back to my room where I laid down again. At about 5 pm, I got into the bath and Jane came over and checked me. I was at 4-5 cm! Jane said that I should spend some time soul searching and thinking about the baby coming out. I was disappointed but I got of the tub pumped and on a mission. After I ate my husband and I went back to our room and talked to the baby and her that it was time and that we were ready for her. We began to do our best to get things moving; lunges, kissing, nipple stimulation, blue and black cohosh but nothing really picked things up.

My contractions did become more intense but then I started to get the urge to push. Let me tell you, fighting that urge is hell! So Jane came back over at 12:30pm and checked me again and I was still at about 5 cm, so she gave me a two different homeopathics, more blue and black cohosh, and sent me to walk the stairs. Jane wanted to try everything before she broke my water. So finally around 2 am, she broke my water and found that there wasn’t a lot of fluid and that there was meconium in the water. So we went back to the stairs and the urge to push got stronger, Jane asked me to just see how the pushing felt, unfortunately it still wasn’t time, so she checked me again and I was maybe 6 cm. So we discussed our options and decided to go to the hospital to have my labour augmented and because of my strong urge to push to also get an epidural.

We arrived at the hospital at about 4:30 am, and I was put on a fetal monitor. The resident who came to see us wanted to do a scalp Ph test on the baby, because of the meconium. So, while we were waiting for the anesthesiologist to come and give the epidural, she did the test. The babies blood pH level was excellent, so that was a good thing. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the doctor came and gave me the epidural. The relief from the pushing urge was almost immediate. While we had been at the hospital, the baby’s heart rate had dipped a few times, then recovered back to normal levels. We weren’t yet sure if this was due to the monitor slipping off, or if the heart rate was actually decelerating. They hooked me up to an internal fetal monitor, and unfortunately the heart rate decels were real. The doctors began to worry that maybe the cord was pinched against the baby’s neck. Each time the heart rate would drop, I would be asked to shift, move, or get into a different position.

Because of the heart rate issues, the doctors did not want to use oxytocin to augment the labour. They decided to try replacing some lost amniotic fluid with saline. One of the wired that was inside me already could apparently be used for this purpose. The specialist thought that if this didn’t work, we would probably have to have a c-section. They hooked up a drip bag, and started pumping the fluid in. The heart rate dropped almost immediately, and they asked me to wiggle my butt to see if it would recover. That didn’t work, so they asked me to try a different position. Again, the heart rate stayed low. At this point the resident said “Okay, we’re going to move to the O.R. now, and we’re not going to waste any time.”

My husband and parents helped unhook all the wires and plugins from the bed and they started wheeling me to the operating room. I arrived in the operating room, and they hooked up several new IV’s. The anesthesiologist told me that because they were in such a hurry, that the ‘block’ wouldn’t have time to take full effect. They put a screen up so I couldn’t see my belly.

At this point, my husband was allowed to come into the operating room. He sat by my head as they started the procedure. I felt a lot of pressure and pinching as they did whatever they do down there. It was very uncomfortable, but the doctor offered me something that would take away the pain, but that would also make me not remember. I very much wanted to remember, so I declined the pain medication. As they started to pull the baby out, they told my husband he could watch. He peeked his head over the curtain and watched them unwrap the cord from the baby’s neck. It was wrapped around her neck 4 times!

They took the baby over to another table and wiped her down. My husband went over and took a look. He came back and told me we had a baby girl. At this time they were stitching me up. My husband brought the baby over to me so I could see her. Once they finished, they wheeled us over to the recovery room. Once I got there, Mike handed our little baby girl to me. I spent a couple hours in the recovery room, then they moved me to my room. Mike made sure I was settled, then went home to get some rest. Alexandra and I spent the afternoon resting.

Wow, what a story! It sounds very similar to our experience with Molly but we narrowly avoided the section because the amnioinfusion worked for us - and her cord was not wrapped around her neck. Yikes.

I will be praying for you with this one! Good luck. Smile

I had major supply problems with bfing Alexandra and I worked so hard to nurse her - I never was able to exclusively nurse but I am very proud to say that we have a wonderful nursing relationship and she is still nursing today. My issues with Ally's birth really stem from the failure to bf - even though it isn't a failure but that is how I feel. It seemed to me that my body had completely failed me. I couldn't birth or bf and at one point my mw's were worried about ppd.

So this pregnancy I have done everything that I could do help build my supply for the next baby.

I am drinking 3 cups of tea with herbs like alfalfa, red clover and oat straw just to name a few. And tomorrow I am starting to take goat's rue.

My mw also reccomend starting to pump 4 times a day. I haven't found much information on pumping before birth so I am a little conflicted.

I have a weird feeling that this baby is going to come at 38 weeks. I think that is because my parents are going to be away that week. Ally came at 39 weeks so we shall see. I am definitely feeling like I am in the home stretch and i have started making tons of lists and plans for the birth and leading up to it.

I spent the weekend away and Ally stayed with her grandma. It was wonderful! So today we are taking it easy....I am trying to motivate myself to go for a walk everyday. I want to start getting my body ready but I am really lazy today. My goal for the day though is to get my hospital bag and Ally's bag packed.

Dh's only rule about having a homebirth is that I have to have my bag packed and in the van. Last time I was a little cocky and didn't even have a bag packed and everyone was scrambling around at the last minute.

Welcome to your second lodge, Melynda! TFS your birth story. Some proponents of hospital birth would say your story is an example of why babies should be born at the hospital, but I see it as proof that planned homebirths can successfully transfer and make use of technology when necessary. I hope your VBAC goes well!

Very true! The hospital was there when I needed it. One question I have always wondered is if I had been with an OB in the hospital - would s/he let me go 30 hours without augmenting my labour? I wonder what pitocin induced contractions would have done to my girl? I am glad that my mw trusted my body but also had the knowledge to know when to go in.

36 Week Appointment

Today I had my 36 week appt. nothing exciting expect my pulse and the baby's pulse was high. My mw and I talked about my plans and expectations for after the birth. My bff just had twins 5 weeks ago (she has a 18 month daughter too) and had the same mw's so we discussed how it has been so much more difficult than my friend ever imagined. And my mw wondered how that has effected me. I am definitely preparing for the reality of having two to be very different than what I imagine.

I got some clarification on the pumping basically if I can save any colustrom it will allow me to feed the baby and I guess give me some time to establish nursing and not have to worry about the baby's loss of weight and how long it takes for the baby to gain it back.

I have an appt with the bfing doctor I saw often with Alexandra next week and I think she will give me more info on the pumping and I am expecting that she will give me a prescription for domperidone too.

Also on the bfing topic - my last herb goat's rue has finally come in. I hate herbal tinctures because they taste disgusting but hopefully it will help.

Today - I got the house clean and washed the floor. My victory for the floor is that I managed to wash it with out Ally coming in and slipping. Yeah for tv!

Kristin - I am taking a page from your lodge and changing my font color. I thought it was great in your lodge.

I took herbal tinctures for fertility and MAN they tasted nasty. We'll do anything for our LOs, huh?

Sounds like you have a really tuned in MW for her to ask you about your friends labor - that is awesome.

We are....I was wondering why I have a lodge and you are still a couple of days away. My mw's gave Dec.2, to give me more time and my cycles are longer too. But according to my lmp I am due like Nov.30.

Sounds like a good appointment! I'm glad your m/w is so in tune with your needs. Is there any reason your guys pulses where up? I don't know how all that works and I don't recall it ever happening to me? Do you have a feeling about this baby being early or late?

Today was a great day. We had some friends over for a playdate and then I had a massage. Unfortuantely Ally didn't nap well, so by dinner time she had a tantrum. I hate dinner time! Dh is working two jobs so he is rarely at home when Ally and I need a break from eachother.

I am feeling good - I feel like I have pulled a muscle in my groin and that makes things difficult.

I think the coffee is to blame for the increased pulse rate. Next week I am not going to have coffee before my appt.

My feeling is that the baby will come around 38 weeks. I am not sure why...I think it is because my parents will be away that week and that is stressing me out. I actually was only a day off from when I thought Ally would be born.

Hmmmm, I'm curious to see how close you are with your guess? Are your parents supposed to be helping with DD when the baby comes? I can't imagaine DH working more then 1 job, he's working 10 hour days with an hour commute each way and I couldn't take any more. I hope your DD naps well tomorrow!

Vanessa your dh works enough for two jobs! That must be hard!

I am getting used to Mike working, the evenings are the hardest and due to financial issues we need him to work. I feel bad that I am at home but he can make 3 times as much as me.

Yesterday Ally went to my parent's because Mike and I had a birth class put on by our mw's. Ally loves seeing my parents and it was so cute she called both Mike and I and we had practically a real conversation! So cute!

The class was good, nothing really exciting since we know most of the stuff - the mw's went over gbs, vit k, eye goop, hospital transfers and when to call.

I realized today that I am emotionally ready for this baby. The self-doubt and anxiety is pretty much gone.

And I saw my chiropractor and everything looks good babywise and she complimented me on how flexible I am for being so close to term.

your dd is so adorable, it's great that she enjoys spending time with her grandparents. Is your dh easy to get a hold of at work? i hope this lo comes when it's good timing for everyone!

Okay...I am not feeling as great anymore. My hips and groin are killing me! My hips and groin have been bothering me for the last half of this pregnancy but I have been able to deal with it by seeing my chiropractor and massage therapist. But last night I tweaked my hip carrying dd and maybe the baby has dropped too, I don't know but I am hobbling around and turning over and trying to get comfortable in bed is excrutiating! Even sitting can be uncomfortable. Usually the end of the day is worse.

But despite my complaining I am doing well, in good spirits and fairly mobile - there is just some pain. Dh is cute and he thinks it is a good sign that my hips are so loose - another reason to think this baby will just fall out! Smile That is what my one midwife thinks.

I hope you don't have to deal with constant pain for the rest of your pregnancy, I'm sure that is very hard with your DD to care for. How was your weekend, did you do anything fun?

My pain is mainly at night, I just get cranky because I am tired and ready to lie in bed and relax but it hurts to lie down.

I had a good weekend, nothing exciting. Today I went and visited my bfing doctor and she said that since Ally is still nursing I don't need to pump and gave me a prescription for domperidone to start once I give birth and to go and see as soon as I can with the new baby to see if I have a supply or not.

Ally and I did a bunch of baking today. I am in love with muffins that have vegetables in them because Ally and dh will eat them. They hate vegetables. I also have been craving gooey cinnamon buns so I decided to try making them and for the first time ever....they turned out! I am so happy and would like to eat them all right now. Usually when I make cinnamon buns they turn out flat and hard.

And the exciting thing is that I am 37 weeks one less obstacle for my homebirth!

I am so happy that I am 37 weeks! I am really trying to focus on this baby being late because.....well....you really never know. I am actually a little jealous of you ladies who get checked at your appts. My mw's don't check even though it would be nice to know.

Last night Ally had a horrible night! Thankfully dh was off today so he helped out last night and today. I got a bit freaked out last night when I thought about what it will be like when I have to deal with two children at night!

Today we went for a walk and I over did it a bit so the pain definitely has not let up but....tomorrow I get a massage!! Woohoo! Unfortunately she can't massage where I need it most....hmmm...maybe dh will.

So today has been okay.....I am just so ready for this babe to come. And last night I had regular braxton hicks and I had that the night before I went into labour with Ally. So part of me doesn't want to spend the next 3-5 weeks wondering if this is it....but I guess that is a rite of passage in pregnancy. I think it is harder having a frame of reference for labour and when I went into labour.

My mw appt was good, the baby is lower and kind of laying diagonally across my belly, so interestingly I am measuring about 2 weeks behind where I have been 2 weeks ahead.

I am going to do things to ripen my cervix - pineapple, licorice, sex and maybe epo internally now too. But I am going to calm down on the inducing and just try and enjoy this time with Ally. I am enjoying our time but I am just tried of waiting and being exhausted....we aren't able to do as much fun stuff as before but I guess we won't be doing fun stuff after the baby comes either.....ahhhh....you just can't win.

Oh and my massage was wonderful, can't wait for next weeks, I just wish I could have a nap afterwards but Ally usually wakes up right after I am finished.

I did eat half a pineapple yesterday and nothing but I am doing better and I am going to focus on other things. So I am going to my parents this weekend, to rest, relax and have a good time.

The only thing that worries me is that I will be 45 minutes from home....it could be a tough drive.

I am utterly exhausted today...Ally did not sleep well again and of course we had a busy day so she got a 20min nap and I did not get any down time. But thankfully she was wonderful! She even did amazing at my chiropractor appt! For most of the appts I have tried to have a sitter because Ally freaks out - she gets so upset when the chiropractor adjusts me. There was one appt where the doctor just walked in and Ally started crying. Today she saw the dr and got a bit upset but I gave her a special treat and she was fine.

And dh was so nice to me tonight too! I was supposed to go to a girl guide training but was too tired, so he volunteered to go and deliver the cheques I need to take. And he brought me some starbucks and my favorite drink of all time is out - gingerbread lattes!!! And then he cleaned our bedroom!! So today has been pretty perfect!
