Intro Time! DH, Mark, and I met at age 14 at a karate studio. He was so hot, but such a jerk and I figured he was about 17. As I got to know him I realized he wasn’t SO bad and then I found he was the same age as me and oh man I was in love!! It took him a while to realize I was pining, but eventually he got with the program and we started dating on Dec. 23, 1999 when we were 16.

We were together 2 years, and it was adorable. Easy & comfortable. But by 18 I was itching to explore the world. We broke up, as I put it, ‘so I could kiss other boys’ (God I was ruthless). We stayed friends and I would still call him to kill bugs for me. I dated a few (lame) guys and he stayed single.

In 2004, after breaking up with my live in boyfriend I started dating Mark again. It was comfortable and familiar but also different, we were adults now. We weren’t sneaking around or making curfew, we were 2 working adults(ish). I realized that Mark is pretty perfect, kind, funny, gentle and loyal and that if I didn’t get my act together someone else was going to notice and snap him up. I also realized I was done adventuring, I wasn’t any good at it anyway, and I was ready to start building a real life. In May I told Mark I had stopped seeing everyone but him and started looking at wedding dates. He proposed a few weeks later. We got married on January 23, 2005. Tomorrow is our 6 year anniversary!

By 2007 I was in full swing baby fever. It was bad. Mark was going to school for Electrical Engineering and working retail part time. I was a paralegal at a small law firm. We were barely scraping by and life was hectic but by God I wanted a baby. So we started TTC. And kept trying… for a while… I am a planner, a scheduler so month after month of negative pregnancy tests was really grating. By January 2008 we had been trying for 13 months and I was done for a while. I started drinking coffee daily and joined a gym. I drank and took Advil and ate sushi and lunch meat and soft serve with feckless abandon. On February 1 I got my BFP.

Will pregnancy was super easy, I felt great, baby developed beautifully. Things were going swimmingly till the 20 week ultrasound. The tech was nice and chatty as she went through the body parts but then she got kinda quiet. Eventually she went and got a second US tech to come in, telling us she was still training and wanted her supervisor to double check a measurement. I thought it was weird, but whatever. The next day the nurse at my OB’s office called and told me the anatomy scan showed Will had bilateral clubfoot.

My world turned upside down. Club foot is not dangerous and can be corrected, but it is so hard to learn that your baby, for whom you want to make the world perfect and easy, has a defect before he even leaves the gate. By the time he was born we were prepared though and he started treatment at the Shriner’s Hospital in Tampa at 6 days old.

The rest of the pregnancy was pretty relaxed, I started having noticeable, consistent contractions at 31 weeks. I had contractions 8 min apart every afternoon for weeks. By 35 weeks I was 3 cm dilated with bulging waters, the OB put me on pelvic rest till 37 weeks, but otherwise was unconcerned. At 37w5d I was 5cm dilated and still bulging. I went to work and was completely useless, (but present!). By that evening I was having pinching contractions 5 min. apart and DH had me call the OB. The OB had me go to L&D and at midnight when the checked me in I was still 5cm and contracting regularly so the kept me overnight.

The OB checked me at 6a.m. the next morning and I was 6cm, bulging, but intact and barely contracting. He asked if he could break my water and I being a nervous wreck afraid that they were going to send me home and we would have to pay for 2 hospital visits – we had crap insurance – said, “HECK YES!!” He broke my water and … nothing happened. For 10 min. nothin’ happened and now I was really freaking out because we had started the water clock and I only had 24 hours to get this show on the road or they would start drugs and th-BAM!!!!! My first transition contraction blew my mind. After it eased up I grabbed Mark’s hand and said, “I can’t do this!!” and he smiled like an idiot and patted me and said, “Sure you can honey.” And I thought about killing hi-BAM!!!! The next contraction hit and I was done thinking, talking, plotting or anything else.

Labor was intense, and probably painful, though that word doesn’t really seem to apply. Powerful, uncomfortable, incredibly intense but painful just doesn’t seem like the right word. Contractions would hit in a crest and I couldn’t think for a second, then they would ease off and I would tell myself, ‘This one is almost over; you can rest in a second.’ I was completely in the moment, not thinking about the last contraction or the next one, just living in now. That was a powerful experience for me, to be so completely in the present.

The nurse left me alone for the most part and I labored kneeling over the back of my bed and standing with DH supporting me. At 7:50-ish I started getting a weird, sorta downward pulling feeling. I was able to say “I think I’m pushing?” out loud between contractions and my Mom went to get a nurse. Thank goodness Mom was there since DH didn’t hear me! The nurse checked me and I was complete! She told me to stop pushing and they would call my doctor. Stop pushing? STOP PUSHING?!!? YOU STOP PUSHING!?!!?!?! That was the hard part, breathing through contractions and trying to resist pushing. By the time the OB walked into the room I was more than ready. 2 pushes later Will was born at 8:05a.m., 2 hours after birth really started. It was intense and awesome and amazing and empowering and I got 14 stitches and a baby to show for it. Biggrin

Wahhhhh! My hands and wrists are killing me. The pregnancy induced carpel tunnel started to really flair up about 2 weeks about and it has gotten SO BAD this time. My right hand randomly feels like it is on fire and the tip of my middle finger has not stopped tingling in a week. And I woke up in the middle of the night last night feeling like I sprained my left wrist. I can't open or close the hand without pain.

I really like being pregnant and normally enjoy the last few weeks of ease before the work begins. I was in no hurry to have this baby, but now? In constant pain? Get out, get out, get out!!!

Besides the alfalfa m MW has me on, has anyone else had luck with any swelling remedies?

I enjoyed reading your stories- how cool that you and DH have known each other for so long! I'm sorry I have no advice for the swelling. You sound like you had a good first birth- what are your plans for this one?

ETA- how has your son's club foot done with treatment? I was born with a club foot too- not sure on the severity of it but I had to have a cast on my foot as a baby and I remember my parents doing stretching exercises and really working with me to walk correctly on it. I hardly notice it now though.

My hands feel better, the right one still wakes me up at night, but at least the severe pain in the left went away. It's crazy what pregnancy does to our bodies!

As far as our plans for this birth: we are hoping for a homebirth. We had our home visit on Saturday. I love my midwife, she is adorable and comforting and great. I have all my birth supplies and laundry done so we are all set when baby decides it's go time.

I have been having lots of strong contractions for a few weeks, so hopefully I am dilating like I did with DS. In fact, yesterday afternoon I was having strong contractions that created a LOT of painful pressure on my cervix. The MW doesn't do internal exams unless necessary so I won't know if I am making progress 'till labor, if then. But I hope it is another short and sweet labor.

DunyaWolf - Will's feet are fantastic, thanks for asking! Both his feet were turned in, the left much stiffer and the right more flexible. When he was 6 days old he got his first set of casts and a new set every week for 6 weeks. At 6 weeks he had a minor surgical procedure to loosen some tendons and wore his last set of casts for 3 weeks. After that he was fitted for a set of Markell boots and a metal bar. He wore those 23 hours a day for 3 months and graduated to only wearing them at night. He stills wears the brace every night and will till he's 4. It has been a long, hard, sleepless road, but we are really pleased with his progress, you can't tell anything was wrong. He walked at 10 or 11 months and ran shortly after. He jumps and spins and dances and hops.

He treats at the Shriner's Hospital in Tampa, it's a 3 hour drive for us, but treatment is free. The Shriner's are really amazing.

Last night was fun, I felt weird and I was contracting in a strange way. I thought we might have some action, but then I sat up and burped and that was the end of that. The pregnant body is so weird.

I had my 38 week appt. on Thursday. Everything seems fine. The MW did my GBS swab so we will know in a week if I need the antibiotics. She sent me home with a set of antibiotics just in case I go into labor before the results come back.

Jack is still nestled head down, but she said his head is still floating. He dropped a week or 2 ago - it was pretty dramatic, the night before I was showing my mom where he was, all lodged up in my ribs, and by the next morning I went to find the top of the fundus and it was down a good 3 inches from my sternum! Will was engaged and applying pressure to my cervix really early. By the last week I was walking around his head. But if Jack's head is still floating near my pelvis then I suppose we have more waiting ahead.

Will was born at 37w6d, that's today!! It is hard to wrap my head around the idea that we are talking about days instead of months till Jack arrives.

I'm starting to get a little antsy for him to get out though. Last time I was focused on keeping the baby in and enjoying the magic and the wonder and all that goop. This time - between the carpel tunnel and the pelvic pain - I am kinda ready to get my body back, please and thank you. Of course that means I am jinxing myself and he will go 2 weeks late!! Biggrin

looking good! that is too funny about the contractions stopping after the burp.

I feel the same way about this pregnancy compared to the first time. Last time as a FTM everything was magical and wonderful Lol this time...between trying to wrangle DS, not getting to nap whenever I need it, etc. on top of more discomfort than last pregnancy...not as magical. Let's blame it on the rambunctious toddlers!

Last night was rough, baby was flailing around all over!! He was stretching and kicking and rolling! So painful! And there were contractions in there and I was hot and my hands and wrists hurt!! Since the contractions were irregular I was pretty sure it wasn't labor but I was kinda freaked out that he was going to break his water with all the jabbing! Obviously he didn't, but it was one heck of I night! I can't wait to get some sleep tonight.

Tomorrow is February 1, which is the day I have had in mind all along. I'm sure it's jinxed since I want it so bad, but I'm still excited to have made it this far. After tonight I get an amethyst in my mommy-jewelry instead of a garnet!!!

I think I'm gonna go make a double batch of banana pudding. And maybe a chocolate cake. I know it's wrong, but at 38w1d I am past caring! Blum 3

They were DELICIOUS! I had a tiny bite of cake last night and it was just what I was craving. Then I had pudding for breakfast and waking up at 7 to go watch 2 2-year-olds all day didn't seem so bad. I just got home and I'm sneaking bites of cake when DS isn't looking. Blum 3

I can't get over how active Jack still is. He kicks and squirms and gets his feet right up under my rib cage. Seriously, dude, relax. Should be fin to see if he is this rolly polly when he comes out.

I had a false alarm last night. Contractions were coming consistently from about 5pm till I went to bed at 9ish. And they were the pressure kind with the pinchy, ouchy feeling at the end. DS was being such a pain I called MIL to come help me with him and by the time DH got home from work I was debating calling the mw. Eventually they faded off and I was left with no baby but a very clean house since DH and MIL cleaned up in case it was the real thing. I should have false alarms more often just to get someone o come do my dishes!!

Now DH is all set to have a baby. He keeps talking about calling out of work tomorrow and hoping we get the GBS results today, all assuming tonight is the night. I'm trying to gently tell him it could still be a while. /sigh At least he is excited.

If the baby is coming this week I would prefer it to be today or tomorrow so we could get in to see the pediatrician before the weekend. That is one thing I will miss about having the baby at home vs. the hospital, with DS the pediatrician came to us and checked on him all 3 days we were there.

Today would be a cool birthday, 2/2/11.

Not much action today. Just got back from a MW appt. She said Jack's head is much more engaged, only moving a little side to side. So maybe I will have a baby someday. My feet started swelling Monday or Tuesday but my blood pressure was good and no protein in my sample, so all seems fine. No word back on my GBS yet, and I have orders for routine blood work. So we made an appt. for next Thurs.

DH tried to check my cervix this morning, that was entertaining. His verdict: I'm either really open, or really closed. ... Insightful. I wasn't expecting much, it seems like the kind of thing that takes practice. I doubt we will try again, no need to muck things up, but it was a fun experiment. Personally, I doubt I am past a 3 since I haven't seen any mucus. Last time, after 3cm, I passed a bit off and on for 3 weeks 'till I delivered. The suspense - it is killing me.

DH & DS came to the appt. with me. DS recognizes the Doppler and points to it each time and says, "bru-der ha-beat" (brother heartbeat). It is too cute. Today while the midwife checked the heart Will sat in his daddy's lap and listened intently as the thump thump thump filled the room. He blows me away sometimes.

My stretch marks - which had been pretty calm for all the pregnancy - became a vivid red/purple this week. Hopefully this kid makes an exit before they get really out of hand.

That's awesome that you had DH check you!! Haha! I tried to check my own cervix last week and couldn't really tell anything - I thought the same thing - either I'm really dilated or I'm not - turns out I wasn't - haha! Hope things start moving for both of us really soon!!!!

I've been contracting for about 2 hours, between 3-5 min apart lasting a little over 1 min. each. I called the MW and gave her a heads up and told her I would call back if things got more consistent or more intense. I'm not ready to call it yet, but it was enough action for DH to pack me, DS and the kid we nanny into the car and bring us all home. Blum 3

I'm gonna take a shower and lie down and see if things crank up or die down. The anticipation is KILLLLLLLING me!!!! Biggrin

No baby! False alarm. Sad I'm so frustrated and feel so stupid for DH calling out and MIL leaving work early. I'm still contracting but it's all Braxton Hicks again. Whatever, he's bound to show up eventually. In the mean time I'm going to drink a tall glass of chocolate milk and go to bed.

MW called today, my GBS test came back negative! That's a relief, one less thing to worry about. Now I feel like I don't have to 'call it' early, I can wait till labor gets well under way before I call everyone over. Plus it's nice to not take the antibiotics right before nursing. So yay!

Still lots of contractions, some low and strong, some high and light. DH and I finally tried DTD to get things going, no dice. Made me feel ... weird... low contractions and all that, but no labor. I might try to find some red raspberry leaf tea.

My mom came home and got her cat so we were able to finish up the nursery, that was fun! We moved the changer in there and got a book shelf to keep supplies in. We still don't have a crib, but we probably won't till March or April, Jack will be in our room in the bassinet till then. But it's nice to have all his clothes put away and my nursing station set up.

Hope to report some action soon!

MW Appt. today! Still pregnant but everything looks good. My blood work came back great, baby sounded great, my BP and sample were fine. Just waiting for Jack to decide to show up.

I asked the MW what the plan is if I don't go into labor before 42 weeks, since that is the usual cutoff to have a home birth. She said she has never had to transfer a woman to an OB for to going overdue. She said if I haven't had the baby by Thursday (40w4) she will send me for an U/S to make sure everything is physically ok and if I STILL haven't had him by the next weekend (41w6d) than she will induce me, she has ways. She didn't give me any specifics but she seemed confidant! Hopefully none of that will be necessary though. 2 weeks seems like such a LOOOOOONG time.
