OK, well, here is an intro then!

I'm 31 yrs old, DH is Faris, 31. We have one child, Jacob, almost 2 1/2.

I'm a PA and, with my 1st preg, I had a very medicalized idea of birth. I figured, you can't plan anything anyway, you never know what could happen that would change your plans, so why plan anything? I was gung-ho about having an epidural ASAP. *don't read further if you are avoiding negative birth stories *

So when my water broke at 2 am with Jacob, I was terrified. I did not want to go to the hospital. We went right away, and they laid me in bed with a monitor on the entire time. Of course my contrax slowed and were not progressing, and being strep B +, I was on a time limit, so eventually they made me have Pitocin. The pain was intolerable, and no nurses came in and spent any time with me at all. They would turn up my IV and leave. I was scared, in horrific pain and didn't know anythign about my options to control it, nor how to help labor along without Pitocin, despite having taken the obligatory Lamaze. I had Demerol, then an epidural. Demerol made me so loopy I don't remember them giving me Jacob when he was born. And Jacob ended up face-up and in distress, so I ended up with a big ol' episiotomy which tore, and forceps delivery.

Having had THAT experience, boy am I determined that it go differently this time! I feel much more educated about how birth is supposed to normally go and what to do to prevent complications as much as possible. I feel much more empowered as far as helping myself deal with pain. I feel DH has learned some as well about how to help me. And, I hired a doula, which is giving me no end of comfort right now when I start being unsure if I can really handle this. I know she has the knowledge to help me get through it.

Thank you ladies for your support and help with the questions I have had during this preg! It's very empowering to know we are all doing this together and succeeding!
