Have you ever attended a birth yourself? Has your mom told you of her own experiences with birthing? Do you have siblings who have had children? What do you hope to gain through their experiences? (if you have had the chance to talk about it with them.)

As far as the pre-labor SROM thing goes, I'm not going to stress too much about something that, from what I've heard, doesn't really happen that often anyways. My MW said they like to hear from you when your water breaks so that they can acertain that it actually has broken, because it's not always obvious. If it hasn't broken, you don't have anything to worry about. Yeah, 6 hours is not a lot of time, but it's better than nothing. I know they have to deal with the hosptial policies of doing a c-section if you haven't given birth within a certain amount of time after membrane rupture due to the "risk of infection" (can't remember...but I think it's 24 hours), so they'd rather do something to get you to birth instead of waiting and letting you get cut. Lying about how long your membranes have been ruptured is always an option, though.

I have never attended a birth. My mom has told me her experiences. She was unhappy with the way her first birth, my older brother's, went (she then lived where I live now and had the infamous "Dr. Dammit"). Her membranes ruptured, she went to the hospital, and then she had every medical intervention in the book short of a c-section (and AROM, obviously, because her water had already borken)--narcotics, pit, epidural, episiotomy (which caused her to have a 3rd degree tear), and forceps delivery. It was also a pretty long labor, which I think is partly because she got an epidural too early. She wanted something more natural with her future births, and she nver got an epidural or episiotomy again. With me, she can't remember for sure, but she thinks she got a shot of narcotics. Her labor began with rupture of membranes again, so she went to the hospital early. She says if she hadn't been at the hospital, she would have been able to deal with it better and probably won't have gotten a shot of narcotics (demyrol). With the brother after me, my mom was having contractions like she was in labor, but she went to the hospital and they said her cervix wasn't changing. They sent her home once, and then the second time, they gave her a shot of morphene (!?!?) which allowed her to relax and go to sleep, and when she woke up, she had stared dialating. She thinks she had demyrol during that one, too. With my youngest brother, she finally had a totally unmedicated birth. My dad was at work and my mom was at home with her 3 small children. She called my dad and told him she was having contrax, but he didn't think it was a big deal because with the last one, she'd had "false labor" so he wasn't in any hurry to leave work. She was doing fine laboring at home, and when they finally did go to the hospital, she was already 7 cm and my brother was born within an hour of their arrival.

I don't have any sisters, and all of my brothers are not married yet, so I'm the first one in my family to have a baby. My husband's older sister has a little girl from her marriage to a guy she eloped with who she met on the internet. They got separated while she was still pregnant and they may even have already been divorced before she had her, so obviously the father wasn't there for the birth. My FIL once told me that he thinks some of this SIL's issues come from the fact that she was molested as a child by an extended family member. So...she brought a lot of emotional baggage to the birth, and I'm sure she was scared out of her mind, so I guess her getting an epidural may have been the best thing. Her view of birth is very different from mine and I didn't like the way my conversation with her made me feel, because she acted like she thought my birth would be like hers, and I know it won't be.

I know my experience will be different from those of others because I have a plan, KWIM? I'm preparing, I have a supportive DH and awesome MWs. I'm hoping to stay at home a long as I can, even if my water breaks, my MW said that if I'm not GBS+ I don't have to go to the hospital right way, I can stay home for either 6 hours if contrax don't start or until my contractions are close enough together to go.

I bought a birth ball! Well, it's actually an exercise ball, but they're basically the same thing. I saw an add saying K-mart was having a sale on them, so we went and picked one up. All they had left were the smallest size--55 cm/21 in, but the recommended user height on it is 4'8" to 5'3", and I"m 5'3" It's pretty comfortable to sit on. Just a little update

Yeah, I'm on weekly visits now. I scheduled my next appointment for Friday (even though today was one week from my last visit) because DH doesn't have any classes on Fridays and I wanted him to get to come. He was going to come to my first MW appointment, but then my little brother got appendicitus that day, so everything changed. He couldn't come last week because I forgot to check his school schedule and it turns out he had a class at the same time as my appointment.
