My body is feeling better everyday! Just gotta get that tear to heal up & lick the internal Hemmi's (TMI) and I'm gold! Odin is an awesome nightime baby, just nurse & sleep then repeat, so I'm feel well rested most days. Love cosleeping & side lying nursing.

Mentally I'm feeling a lot better too. I kicked @#$ during this birth for as long as it went I'm so pumped that I pushed out my baby. Took a while but I've finally gotten to the proud point. I might actually think about doing it again at some point!

Odin has been seeing the doc. every week & today the LC. Everything looks good but they are keeping an eye on his weight. Today he was 9lb 4oz (9lb 8oz tues, 9.95 last week) bot still 2oz above birth weight. Nursing is going so well though so I think its just a matter of time until he starts gaining.

    Aw so cute...love the monkey!!

I'm so glad to hear that he (and you!) are continuing to improve and things are looking good, and mostly that you're starting to feel good about your birth experience, even though it didn't end up quite as planned. You did AWESOME and you deserve to be proud.

Boo hemis! I seriously thought they might be permanent but they've mostly disappeared so there is a light at the end of the tunnel (ewww, seriously no pun intended). I'm so glad you're in a place where you can be proud of yourself. You should be!! He'll sort the weight gain thing out and soon he'll be growing way too fast. So so happy for you! He's a super cute little monkey!

Oh my gosh he's an adorable baby!

Glad to hear that things are progressing nicely. If nursing is going well with lots of wet dipes, I wouldn't worry about the weight. As you mentioned, he had a lot of swelling, and with IV fluids that can add additional water weight. So I bet he's already gaining some true weight, his body is just processing the extra fluid.

    Default Wrapping Up

I can't believe its almost been a month since Odin arrived. I'm so glad that I got to share my experience with others and have this lodge to look back on the end of my pregnancy and first few weeks of baby, something I didn't do with DS1 and wish I had. Here is Odin today at 3 weeks 5 days, looking as beautiful as ever...

Things are moving foward each day, though we have little steps back here and there. Odin still isn't gaining weight and at the end of this week hit 9lbs, 2oz below his birth weight. I guess not so cool for almost 4 weeks old. We were sent to a gastrologist (sp?) to get more answers. The night before we saw her we were told to give him some special formula after each nursing session. He hated the bottle and formula so that didn't go so well. She was actually shocked that we hadn't given him a bottle yet. WTF??? He had 2 BM bottles in the hospital the night he started eating and we couldn't room in but why would I have given him a bottle at 3 weeks. Kinda bothered me. Anyway she was concerned that it would continue to be an issue and wanted to admitt him back to the hospital yesterday to basically force feed him through a nose tube. Ack. She agreed that we could try all through the weekend and if there was no improvement by monday afternoon we would likely have to put him back in the hospital. She also gave us some better tasting formula to try, not my fav. but better than the hosptial again. He had tons of labs done yesterday and the 1st flood draw clotted before they could get enough blood. It was so sad. I demanded to nurse him during the 2nd attempt at getting blood which went much better. So far nothing odd showing up with how he processes food, another concern they had. The doc. also noticed that he doesn't track well with his eyes so that is something his primary care docs. will check out later. I swear it never ends.

I've been doing nursing boot camp all day today, back to newborn every 2 hour feeds on both sides and pumping after, praying for improvement. He still isn't a fan of the formula and I've only been able to get 2oz of that junk in him today. Also got 2oz of EBM in him as well. Tomorrow I might bust out the tube nurser I have from DS1 and try to suppliment him while he nurses as well. He latches well and has a strong suck, but he is lazy. He often falls sleep after like 5 min. on each breast or starts with a lazy suck and just wants to hang out. I'm doing every number in the book to keep him awake and interested with no luck. The milk is there now we just need him to eat more. He has lots of wet diapers and isn't dehydated at all so I'm at a loss. I just don't want my baby in the hospital again.

I know its out of my hands but I feel like such a lame parent not being able to keep my kid healthy. Before that appt. Monday we also have some other services coming to do intake appts. so that they can track Odin's development for the next couple years. I seriously can't wait for this to all be behind us and to move foward with our happy healthy kiddo. One day at a time. Just never thought I'd be dealing with all this. My heart goes out to parents that have children and babies that are very sick and deal with more than I will ever have to. A year from now when I look back at this lodge I hope to be standing in a different place and not remember this rough patch being too bad.

Aw, that is rough. He sure looks healthy and happy and adorable! Daniel was also a lazy eater that first month or so, we tried every trick in the book to keep him awake longer so he would eat more. That hindmilk is the fatty good stuff, it's so important to keep them interested enough to get to the hind stuff, but so hard when they just want to sleep!
It certainly doesn't sound like he needs the hospital- I hope you figure out something soon to make the doctor, you and the baby happy. Hang in there!

Wow time flies! I can't believe he's nearly 1 month old! He's sooo handsome!

I'm sorry it's been rough. You're doing a great job. Your doc would be horrified to hear that we're only starting on the bottle at 7 weeks! The tube nursing system sounds like a good next option. The growth charts treat every baby as if they are some idealized average. Is there any evidence that bigger babies gain slower at first? Was Ryland's growth profile much different?

A year from now you'll be chasing him around the house wondering how anyone could worry about his progress!

    Default Update

On Monday we found out he had gained 7oz within 3 days. Woo Hoo! No hospital for us to put in a nose tube. My BFing boot camp weekend totally helped! Still having to keep him on a strict feeding routine and try to beef him up. Got to meet with the LC to find ways to get him more calories without having to suppliment with tons of formula. Trying out some herbs now to see if I can boost my milk supply and pump extra BM to use instead. Next weigh in is on Friday and hopefully we continue with this great progress.

Got a flip diaper instert today to go with my flip cover. I really like the cover with my prefolds. Got the flip insert on him right now I can't wait to see how it holds up. Its a little less bulky with the insert than the prefold so that is nice. Also got an ecobum cover as well which looks kinda similar to the flip cover so I'm curious how I will like that one.
