I actually teared up when I saw this! Thank you so much. You can't possibly know how much it means to me.

Most of you don't know me, so let me share. DH (Mark) and I met at a fund raising concert at a local bar for a friend who was paralyzed in a motocross accident. I don't usually call people back that I meet in bars but it somehow seemed right. Maybe it was the beautiful fall night.

We were both living in San Francisco at the time. I was teaching first grade and he was doing product development for a software company. That spring I decided to go back to school for my masters in curriculum development ( I wanted to leave the classroom, but not education) and he started working for a smaller company as an integration consultant. We were engaged fall, married that winter in my parents backyard, and got our dog that spring.

He was traveling to the East Coast a lot for work and it wasn't working for us. So, we moved East. If you have never done a cross country drive, I highly recommend it. We live in a beautiful and diverse country. On that drive we started talking about when we wanted to start a family. So we decided that I would go off birth control on our year anniversary and see what happened.

I had been on depo-prevera for about 5 years at that point. We didn't know when I would ovulate as it can take up to 18 months (!). So we knew it could be 2.5 years before we really knew if we could have children. Turns out, I had major bleeding (25 days) in July, a regular period (3 days) in the beginning of September and then a funny feeling as I was finishing my thesis in October. I had eaten a chocolate bar the night before and I never eat like that.

DH was out of town (in SF) for training to become a Sales Engineer for his company and I had a funny feeling. I took 2 pg tests and yep, I was pg. I woke him up at 6am CA time to tell him. Then I woke up my mom.

This has been a fairly uneventful pregnancy. I was never working full time, just substitute teaching for a couple of schools. DH made me continue to go to a personal trainer, so I have stayed fit. We bought a house in March and are settled in here finally.

Originally I was going to an OB practice that had some midwives. I have always planned on a NCB. It never crossed my mind to do it another way. I was going to be in a hospital, but made DH swear up and down not to let me have medication, because even over the counter stuff gives me headaches, so I couldn't imagine what an epidural would do to me body.

Where we live now, I found a fantastic Birth and Women's Center that is 35 minutes from our house. We are giving birth at the center with 2 midwives and a nurse-midwife in attendance. I couldn't be happier.

I need to feed DH now, he's a monster in the kitchen, and I'll update you on how I am feeling later.

Thanks again!

Ahh, that's a really nice story. I'm glad you didn't have too much trouble conceiving after being on the shot.

I can't wait to hear more about how you're doing now that we're getting closer.

I'm really sorry we didn't get your lodge started earlier.. I'm glad you were happy to see it Smile

Okay- enough about me, let's talk about my pregnancy. It has been great. Everything is as normal as can be. I had no morning sickness, no food issues, nothing to complain about. In fact I have had nothing to complain about until these last few weeks.

I had been measuring nearly 3 weeks too big from my 25 week exam onwards. Just in this last couple of weeks I am finally back down to where I am supposed to be measuring. I think that is good. Both DH and I had huge heads when we were young (his still might be too big Wink and I was getting nervous. Neither of us were too big when we were born, I was 6.2lbs and he was 8.3 but we both looked like lollipops.

These last few days, my lower back has been so achy. I have been having huge contractions and have felt bruised and so swollen down there. Plus, it is like a 1000% humidity so my whole body is swollen. We don't have humidity like this in CA and I grew up in the desert where it doesn't exist (it's a dry heat, is common saying, but who cares how dry it is when it is 128 degrees out).

Today I am going to make yogurt and fruit pops for the freezer. I also plan on 3 types of cookies to freeze for family when they visit. Regular meals have all been assigned to various family and friends who volunteered. My SIL, mom, and some friends all have food duty. Plus DH's company provides 250.00 a week for 2 weeks of take out as one of his paternity leave benefits. I don't think we eat 500.00 a year of take out, but it sounds useful.

When will the baby come??? I keep asking myself, but the others who keep asking are going to start getting snotty comments. Any ideas?

That's a really neat paternity benefit. My husband gets FMLA and that's it. It sounds like you have things pretty organized as you get ready for your son to arrive. Biggrin

Awesome that you get take out $! We could have used that last time. All my DH would make me was nachos, I haven't eaten them since!

I am not feeling like baby is coming anytime soon today. I am not sure why I have that feeling. I trust my body and instincts though, so I made a big list of things to get done.

It is funny, if you had asked me Saturday, I would have said the baby would be here by Tuesday. I was having strong contractions every 20-30 minutes that continued for most of the day. I have had loose stool for about 2 weeks, I haven't been feeling well, everything is clean... it seemed like all the signs were there.

I guess he is just a tease like his Daddy. It seems as though he is going to be on time, but he never is. I wonder if he will have his fiery red hair too...

Your pg sounds like mine - just uneventful and wonderful, until it all hits near the end.

Sounds like you have it all organized! I'm jealous. But I don't miss the east coast humidity...it's so sticky and gross. At least you won't be pg in July and August. Smile

Congrats on your lodge, Amanda! YAY for teachers!! So glad to hear you've had a wonderful pregnancy! So have you collected all of the take out menus from near-by restuarants so you can use up that $500???

I haven't collected any take out menus except the local Thai place and a sandwich shop. We just don't eat out. I grew up eating nearly every meal at home, I love to cook and am pretty darn good. It is one of those weird things, but I don't really like eating anything that I am not sure of the ingredients. I am not a picky eater, I just like knowing where my food comes from. I guess it is a product of have a farmer for a father.

So, yesterday was a boring pregnancy day. I got a massage which was wonderful, so I was inspired to chose paint colors for my bedroom. I keep thinking that if I can just get myself involved in a big enough project then that is when the baby will decide to come...

Yeah...I'm more of a "whole foods" eater myself! How cool that your dad is a farmer...what types of foods does he grow??

I had a pregnancy massage about a month or so ago...it was amazing! Absolute heaven! And I'm sure that as soon as you get rolling on the bedroom painting the baby will make it's grand arrival! What color did you pick?

So nice to catch up on your lodge--congrats!!! You sound very peaceful and I too have the feeling my little girl is not coming soon.

You say you are in a suburb of Philly--not sure how far you are from downtown Philly. When my bf was visiting recently, we ate at this great restaurant in Society Hill named Farmacia that has organic and local grown food. It was so nummy, don't know if they have takeout but if you want to go out after baby is born you might like that place.

My dad currently is a fish farmer. He grows bass and talapia, two of the fish that should be farmed. Even he is against farm raised salmon and shellfish. One of his partners also grows tomatoes, peppers, mango's and dates. The farm is in a huge farming community, so most of our veggies, eggs and things come from other farmers in the area. My parents have a small citrus patch in their yard so they have lemons, tangellos, oranges and huge grapefruit. Dad used to have a nut farm.

So yesterday I had an appointment with my MW's and my blood pressure was way up. It had crept up a little last week, but was still in the normal range, my baseline pressure being pretty low. Yesterday, my bottom number was up 12 points from last week, which is 21 points different from what it had been previously. I also was feeling kind of funny so I had a bunch of tests. There were no other pre-e symptoms other than not feeling right and the blood pressure.

Needless to say, the midwife sprang into action. They immediately drew blood and sent it to the hospital STAT. They wanted to know in a few hours how my liver and kidney's were functioning. I also have to do a 24 hour urine collection and they will test my blood again Friday. They also had to notify their OB so that he can review my files JIK I have to abandon my dream of delivering at the birth center and go into the hospital.

Originally they wanted me to go to the hospital on Friday to get the tests done and for a NST, but when they got my results back from the lab, they were so reassured that this was an anomaly that I am just going back to the center Friday to repeat the tests they did yesterday.

I was so scared! Having had such an easy pregnancy so far, and simply expecting to get weighed and measured, I didn't really know how to react. I know they are on top of everything and I have to say that the behavior of my midwife was so reassuring.

I hope everything is good again on Friday. I just want to be safe and for the baby to be safe, but am unsure how to make decisions in the face of this kind of health risk (if there is one). I love that the midwives are very low intervention, all natural and their advising OB has been a part of their practice for 18 years (in fact he just bought it from the founding midwife). But the idea of taking a medical stance on my pregnancy and birth, which I believe is something so natural, something my body was designed to do, makes me panic. It is like all of a sudden my beliefs are being turned on their heads. How could my body do this?

Awww.... I hope everything is OK.... Although I think it may be good to keep in mind that shortly before going into labour your BP does tend to rise quite a bit, so maybe this is like a sign for you?! Wink

I think if the BP is the only problem you have, then it's probably nothing to be too concerned about!

Love,

Sarah-Jean

Amanda-
That must have been quite concerning to you! I think, though, unless your BP numbers had really skyrocketed, it was just precautionary testing (the "better safe than sorry" approach). My BP has gone up recently, too...still okay but quite a bit higher than my pre and early pregnancy levels. It's good that your midwives are checking to make sure that it's not an indicator of something else...try to remember though that your body is taking care of two beings right now and it is under some stress...things like this may happen but aren't an indicator that anything is *wrong*. Please KUP on your follow-up tests tomorrow---I'm certain everything will be fine;-)

I guess that tomorrows tests will decide whether I can give birth at the center or not. If my bp hasn't gone down or if it has increased, they cannot take the risk of having me deliver at the center. As long as it doesn't mean I have to be induced right away, I can live with that.

The midwife called to say that the OB does want me to go in on Wednesday before my regular appointment to the hospital to do a NST and have an u/s to measure growth. I guess the growth thing is because if I have not delivered as of 41 weeks, if he hasn't grown it is a sign of stress and we will begin talking about induction.

I had a long talk with the baby while in the shower this evening, explaining things to him and letting him know it might be better to make his entrance sooner rather than later. I had been telling him to hold out for a little while, but at this point that kind of scares me.

I hope I am the picture of health tomorrow!

Keep visualizing the birth you want to have. I don't think it's doomed yet. If you're interested, try incorporating some meditation into your day to bring your blood pressure down. Walking, massage, reflexology, accupuncture etc are also very good ways to bring bp down normally. My blood pressure was way up to 120 over something a couple of weeks ago which is normal for most but way high for me who is usually in the 80's or low 90's. It was only that one day.. It was back down to 90something over 56 yesterday.

I think everything will be just fine. Smile

Oh, my goodness. I've been going through the same thing, Amanda!

My booking BP was 100/60, and it's been up to 130/88, but my blood tests were normal, too. But I still feel like I'm not out of the woods yet. I have a follow up tomorrow, so I hope all is well. Because of all this testing I've had to miss yoga, which isn't helping with the relaxation! Induction - ugh! Not the end of the world, though.

It does stink, especially when the whole pregnancy has been so uneventful up until now. I hope baby took your advice to heart.

Your Dad's farm must be somewhere warm if they're growing dates nearby! I'm jealous of the amazingly fresh and wonderful food they must eat!

I checked in to add "prenatal" or "postpartum" to the description, and while I suspect it's now the latter, I don't want to change it until we know for sure.

:bighug:

You have an adorable baby! It is heartbreaking when things don't go as planned. My first was an emergency c-section, too. I was grateful that my little boy was healthy, but I grieved the loss of my hopes for a natural birth. I hope you are OK.
