Our first Sweet Pea has arrived. I have copied and pasted the quote from Kristen here.

    Quote Originally Posted by chameleon1575

Last Monday, my blood pressure spiked pretty high. I called the doctor and the sent me to L & D to get checked out. My blood pressure was high, but all of my bloodwork came back normal. So, they sent me home for the night and I went into my doctor's the next day. He put me on blood pressure medication and bed rest for a week. That was the last post I made.

All was going well, until Thursday morning when I woke up at 2:00 am with a very high blood pressure and VERY bad pain under my rib cage. I waited a little while to see if the pain would stop (like maybe it was gas or something). I ended up calling the doctor a couple of hours later and they told me to go to the hospital. I laid in triage for an hour or so and next thing I know, my doctor was there and he explained to me that I had pre-eclampsia and they believed I had a rare syndrome called HELLP. Basically my liver was expanding and my platelets were dropping. I was at risk for my liver rupturing or my platelets getting so low that I would have had to had a transfusion. The only cure was delivery of my baby. Next thing I know, I had two other on-call high-risk doctors in my room giving me a second opinion. And then two anaesthesiologists (sp?) came in after that. Next thing I know, I am being stuck and IVs were being started and they were explaining a spinal and everything else. My DH made a few phone calls and got handed the paper blue suit.

I had an emergency C-section. So far, I am recovering from that well. My liver and platelets are getting back to normal. I am still having issues getting my blood pressure back down, but they just adjusted my medication, so hopefully that will do it.

Needless to say, our baby is in the NICU. She will be there until she is close to her due date. I delivered at 28 weeks, so she will be there awhile. She is doing remarkably well, though. She has already come off of her respirator. There are tons of issues with premie babies, but everything is going really, really well. She seems to be doing better than many that are this early. Her name is Mattie Louise. Mattie, after DH's grandmother. And Louise is a family name on my side that has been passed down to the oldest daughter for a bunch of generations.

This is honestly the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I want my baby in my arms so badly that it hurts. And I would give anything to hear a good loud cry. But, she is in very good hands and the team at the NICU has been so wonderful to me and DH. Explaining everything and going out of their way to call us with updates.

Anyway, I'll be checking on you guys. Don't know how often because the hormones are making me insanely weepy. Good luck to all of you and I hope you have long happy pregnancies. Keep us in your prayers.
Here's one of the pics Kristen posted of her baby girl:

On Thursday, July 5, I woke up about 8 am, got up and peed, stood up, and wet my pants. I wasn't sure if it was urine or my water breaking, since it stopped after a little bit. Still, I was leaking some, so I called my OB's office and they said to come in. I called DH and told him that it may be a false alarm, but he needed to come home and take me to the doctor.

We got to the doctor about 10:30 and both felt confident that they would send us home, so we had not called anyone at this point (family or friends). The doctor on call (not my OB, but a really nice doctor who ended up delivering me), examined me and told me she would do a couple tests to see if I was leaking fluid. Well, as soon as she put a speculum in me, fluid gushed out. She said there was no need for the tests, I was clearly ruptured and we were going to have a baby that day. Since I wasn't contracting, she said that she wanted me to get over to L&D and get started on Pitocin and an epidural. I wanted to wait a little bit, but she said with me being pre-term (by 2 days) and my water already breaking, that she wanted to be on the safe side and start things right away. So they wheel me over to L&D, and DH and I are both on our phones to our parents telling them that we were having a baby.

They got me hooked up to everything by about 12. I cried getting my epidural -there were parts that hurt, but also parts that just feel so funny (I was expecting just the feel of a needle going in, but it was definitely more than that). I loved it once it was in and I was feeling the meds. I was nervous about the pitocin, but that gave me no problems. I was between 2-3 cms when they started all this. Our families arrived to wait with us, and things went somewhat slow for a few hours. At one point, they came in to put internal monitors in me, and Jack's heartrate dropped from the 140s to 70. All of a sudden 5 people were in my room and were moving me around trying to get his heartrate back up. The doctor told me that she would give him a half hour to get his heartrate back up, and if it dropped more or didn't raise, she was going to do a C section to get him out. DH and I sat, holding hands, staring at the monitor to will it back up. Thankfully it did go back up, so we continued on.

I was at about 5 cms at 6:45. When she checked me again at close to 8, I was hoping to be at least at a 7. I was at a 10. I started pushing at about 8:10 and Jack was born at 8:39. It was actually a wonderful experience. I felt no pain, and I did not have to push long at all. I watched his birth in the mirror, and it was amazing to see my son come out. Bryan was so great, and we both cried when he was born.

He weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces and was 19 inches long. He was born at 36 weeks and 5 days. He has a TON of hair, and is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

    Here is Emma's story!
Thursday night, I was sitting on the couch (posting on pg.org!), and I felt a sharp pain in my belly. I thought Emma had kicked really hard or something, because she had been active all day. A second later, I felt a gush. Thinking I had peed myself, I went in to check, and it was not pee, and it kept gushing out everytime I moved. I called the OB, who sent me in to get checked. Of course, in the hospital parking lot, so much fluid gushed out that it ran down the front of my pants. I told the triage nurse my OB sent me to be checked, and she started laughing, and sent me right into a labor room. Well, I was only 1-2cm and 50% effaced, and my contractions had just started on the way there, and were almost unnoticable. I labored through the night, not getting any sleep. In the morning, I was only at 3cm and 80%, after 8 hours of laboring. They put me on pitocin to move things along, since they were worried about her heartrate being low all the time. The contractions were getting hard to talk through. I held out for a while longer, and when at 11am I was only 5cm, and I was exhausted, and the contractions were still not in a regular pattern, I agreed to the epidural. I don't think I could have made it without it. I had the shakes, and could not talk during contractions, and was not even near pushing. After that, things went pretty easily. The epidural was great, I had no problems with it. I catnapped a bit. I still had irregular contractions, but no pain, I just felt my belly tighten when I had them. After a while, I was feeling pressure down low. I had not seen the nurse in a bit, so while I waited for her to come check, I did some small pushes during contractions, in the hope that it would help with the dilation. at 3:45pm, the shift changed, and a new nurse came in. I told her I had pressure, so she checked me. She laughed, said she didn't even have to feel around, she could see the head, and I was about to have her. So everyone rushes in, including the OB (whom I had not seen at all yet). I pushed for about 5-6 pushes, when they told me to wait a second. There was some commotion, and then I was told to push and wait, push and wait, for a few more pushes. Then she was out! She cried almost right away, and her apgar was 8. I got a quick cuddle, then she was taken to the other side of the room to be checked out and cleaned up. Despite being early, she never had to go to NICU or have oxygen or anything.
I found out while being stitched, that what happened was her cord was very tight around her neck, and she was crowning so slowly, that they ended up doing a quick episiotomy and using the vacuum extractor. It was only a 1 degree episiotomy though, so not too bad.
Her second apgar was a 9. She was sponged clean, and had a chance to breast feed a bit, then taken for a more thorough checkup while I was cleaned up. We're both doing well. She's had a bit of trouble latching, and we had some sleepless nights, but I think its getting better every feeding, and I slept today some.
    So her final stats are:
Emma Elisabeth, born July 13th, 2007
    6lbs, 4oz at birth, 19in.

That was at 7 p.m. that night and by 8 p.m. the doctors and nurses decided this was it and it was not safe for me or the baby to continue any further. In retrospect, I wish I would have asked for a bit more time to evaluate everything, but it all went so fast. Anyway, by 9 p.m. I was in the operating room getting the spinal (no biggie at all for that) and our daughter came into the world at 9:23 pm. via c-section (required for placenta previa). She was 5 pounds, 8 ounces and 17 inches, pretty good size for 33 weeks, 2 days.

She was breathing, thank goodness, and DH got to cut the cord. We got to see her for just seconds and then they whisked her away to the NICU. DH got to go with her and he took some video of her and brought it back to me in recovery. My recovery time was quick - about 1 hour until they started letting me have some ice chips and in another hour I was moved to my new post partum room. I was starving (since I'd missed dinner) but they wouldn't let me eat for a while, just jello and liquids.

They also wouldn't let me out of bed to go to the NICU but finally my nurse took me in a wheelchair at 4 a.m. because she realized I wasn't going to sleep otherwise. To be honest, seeing her in the NICU was heartbreaking for me and the first 2-3 days I was in tears most of the time wishing she didn't have to go through this. She had oxygen assistance via nasal canula, multiple IVs for antibiotics, nutrition, etc. She had to have a blood transfusion because they were taking so much blood for testing she couldn't make it up fast enough. She was having "spells" of slow breathing and heart rate, etc etc... It was incredibly hard, especially when it was time for me to go home and she had to stay. The pain of those days is still very real for me.

Fast forward to now (I'll spare you the details of the first week)....

She's now breathing room air and is out of the incubator because she can maintain her own body temperature. All of her IVs have now been discontinued and she is getting all of her food (my pumped breastmilk) through a tube that goes from her nose into her stomach. We had our first attempt at breastfeeding yesterday and she did latch on a few times and seemed to suck for a bit in short spurts. They felt this was a good first attempt and reassured me that it will take a while for her to master this since she still so young. Today we do a bottle feeding and then another breast feeding attempt. Pumping is going really well, it was super easy to get my milk supply in and actually have more milk than I know what to do with! My freezer is full! She will learn both bottle and breast feeding and hopefully will naturally go between the two.

We expect her to be in the hospital a few more weeks, but she has surprised the doctors how quickly she moved to this phase. I spend most of my day at the NICU, so it's tough to stay in touch here much, but I will try to check in.

Thanks for all your good wishes!

Here is Chrstina's (IrishEyes) birth story:

He came out screaming, and his hand was next to his head. He is 6 lbs. 11 oz. and 20 inches long.

They started petocin at 7:15 AM. I was dialated a tight 3 cm and 50% effaced before going into the hospital. I had an epidural at 11 AM. Contracions were painful before that, but after it was administered, I was able to get a little bit of sleep. At about 3 PM, the pain started again. I was dialated to 6 cm and 100% effaced, and definately felt like pushing....I didn't, but it was hard to resist. I used up all the epidural medication. The pharmacy had not made up more, so they couldn't give me another bag of it. The anasegiologist (spelling) was in the room for the rest of the time until after delivery. He was about to directly inject something into the epidural port for the delivery. I pushed Brian out in 45 minutes!

I did have some tearing, and my doctor fixed it up. Unfortunately, from pushing (correctly acording to my doctor), I now have hemrroids. The epidural drug took awhile to get out of my system. I didn't sleep much last night because I was so awake. Plus they checked my uterus every half hour to make sure it was going down.

My son was worth it though!

Sorry it took me so long to get around to doing this. I’ve been having too much fun staring at my newborn all day long. Anyhow, here’s our story.

We arrived at the hospital a little after 7 am for my induction. My water was broken before 8, and pitocin started around 8:15. It took a bit for the contractions to get going, but when they did, there was no messing around! I went from having almost no contractions to having frequent, hard contractions fairly quickly. I had decided to get an epidural because I know what pitocin-induced contractions are like, and my memory was a little too accurate! The anesthesiologist was doing a c-section with my OB before he could get to me, so I was going without for a while until he got there. I handle the contractions okay—I’m pretty quiet about laboring. I just find a focal point and breathe. But I had had it. I told my friend Shannon, who works as a nursery nurse at the hospital and clocked in that morning just to take care of our baby, to go put a hook in that anesthesiologist’s mouth and drag him in. She could tell that I was dead serious, so she went to find out where he was. I am very quiet about the way I handle labor, but when I’ve had it, I’m not squeamish about saying so. Eventually he showed up and got me some good drugs!! Here’s the kicker though: when the nurse checked me shortly after the epidural was in place, I was already 8 cm. Geez, maybe I could’ve gone without that epidural….but after later events, I decided that the epidural was the best thing. I’ll explain that later.

The rest of labor was obviously no big deal. I could feel the contractions, but they didn’t hurt. Sometime before 11, I started to feel pressure. After a couple of contractions of that, I called the nurse to check me. I was 10 cm. They called my OB who had to come from her office at the other end of the hospital. Every time I had a contraction, I could feel the baby trying to slide down. I crossed my legs and begged her to stay until my OB could catch her. It worked. Once my OB got there and I opened my legs, the baby started sliding down with the next contraction and was crowning without my pushing at all. I had told my OB how I felt about episiotomy, and she was intent on getting the baby out without even a tear. I could have had the girl out in one push, but my OB was coaching me on when and how to push so that she would come out slowly, giving a her a chance to stretch things out down there. However, the baby had her hand up against her cheek, which threatened to tear me a good bit. My OB managed to get the baby’s hand pushed back before delivering the rest of the head, resulting in overstretched, raw skin that only needed a stitch to keep it together and avoid my stinging every time I had to pee. I was so grateful.

At 11:15, Natalie Hope was in the world and screaming mad about it it! She was covered in vernix, and the first words out anyone’s mouth was “Whoa, what chunk!” And she was! 9lbs 4oz, 21 inches long. I can’t tell you how amazing it was to finally meet her and have her in my arms and looking up at me. Within an hour, she was nursing like a champ. She latched on correctly with the first attempt! She stayed in her quiet alert state for nearly 2 hours, and has since been an amazingly alert newborn. My pediatrician says that she acts more like a 3-4 week old in her alert phases. She was immediately turning her head toward sound and light—especially my voice—and actually followed me across the room with her eyes the day after she was born. So I guess it’s safe to say that she is pretty healthy.

All in all, I’m grateful for the decision to induce. With such a big baby that wanted to slide out so easily after a short labor, I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer. I’m also glad I ended up having the epidural. It gave me some degree of control over myself while I was fully dilated and waiting for the OB to get there, and it helped me to resist the urge to push until the time was right. It also helped me have more control over my pushing and avoided any real tearing.

I went home Wednesday morning by choice. I could have gone home Tuesday or stayed as long as I wanted (OB said I could stay til next week, if I thought it best!), but wanted the chance to rest while someone was at home with my other kids. I’m glad I made that decision too.

We’re doing well, breastfeeding is going flawlessly (even with the current state of engorgement—OUCH!!), and I don’t feel near as swollen and sore as I did with the last three. I woke up with a migraine this morning (Thursday), but my older three were gone for the day, so Natalie and I were able to just hang out and rest. It was good.
