thanks - I was torn on what to put because she had D.ede in her intro. I think it's a way to avoid being stalked or googled. Dede - let me know and I'll change it in the thread title!

Congrats again!

So without further ado... my intro - or rather, our intro Smile Sorry it’s so long - I’m so EXCITED!! And I want you to really know us – that way the random things I say will make more sense

So our real to life story?

I am of African descent- as in I was born in Nigeria… but don’t ask me anything about it because I’m considered an ‘American born Overseas’ (I’ve been in Georgia since I was a little under 2 years old, but back in the US since a little after I was 6 months old). My mom is from Mississippi, she fell in love with my bio father while in college in Boston, then moved to Nigeria to be with him. She was 30 when I was conceived and I was so small when she was pregnant they told her not to get attached because I was 99% guaranteed to die in-utero. Well – I didn’t, but in her 8th month her Volvo was hit by a speeding train, she went into labor, had me, we both died on the delivery table and God brought us back. So here I am – ready to tell my story now that you have some GREAT background info.

****** Be warned… I’m one of those Jesus fanatics as people like to label them… so my story is deeply peppered.

So I guess you get that I’m a black female – 30 y.o.. I turn 31 1 WEEK before Ava’s due date (my family likes to make babies late I guess). I am one of those people who was raised in suburbia with like 10 other black people in my entire school system in Marietta, Ga (East Cobb to be exact). So when I graduated high school - I did like any self respecting sheltered child would do, I lost my ever lovin' mind. Name it - I have probably done it (here's a link to my story on our church's website http://victoryatl.com/p/12098/Default.aspx ). But God pulled me in from brink of insanity (as in, my doctor put that on my chart) and turned me into one of His radical followers. Well - in the midst of becoming radical for Christ I started serving within the 20-somethings ministry at my church.

Well who knew I would become close friends with a gentleman there by the name of Avery? He’s a Marine (no longer active though), and he’s my best friend and favorite person in the whole wide world. We’re like to 2 peas in a pod. People say they love just sitting and watching us interact – it’s like watching a comedy series. We instantly hit it off - I mean who else remembers G.L.O.W. (Gorgeous Women of Wrestling) from like 1985? We were at a friend’s party and we totally took over the conversation talking about He-Man, Legend (you remember the one – with Tom Cruise), and all these obscure HBO movies we saw when we were growing up. Like… does anyone else in the world really remember Hunk, The Family Dog, or Return to Oz?

Well - with my checkered past I never, ever, ever thought I would ever be desirable to anyone. So then comes Avery who's past is even more checkered than mine - but this man is so on fire for God it makes no sense. And that’s what won me over, in a HUGE way.

We finally admitted to ourselves that maybe, possibly there was something more to this thing we had been dealt. So between July 2004 and January 2005 we had our ministry leaders, our friends, and our families praying that God would just reveal His word for what was going on between us - if anything. Every January our church does a 40 day congregation wide fast. So during this time (mind you, we did an absolute fast where the only thing we could take in was liquid) we fasted about our possible courtship since dating had left both of us completely miserable, useless humans.

Well - on the last day of the fast we came together and spoke about what God showed us during this time. AVERY came right out and said it - I love you, and I've always loved you and God said that you are for me. HAHA!!! You want to talk about stupified - I've never been speechless, but I was that evening. Well after courting for 5 months, and 1 week before we were to leave the country to head down to Nicaragua and work on the missions field, he proposed to me in front of our entire young adult ministry (about 300 strong) on stage in front of everyone!!!

That was Oct 2005. Here we are the end of Oct 2008 expecting out first child. In Dec 2007 our pastor approached us about leading our church’s missions training base in Cuernavaca, Mexico. We of course said yes because we really have a heart for missions and foreign countries. We were scheduled to leave August 2008 and be gone for the next 5 years. In March we sat down and ironed out all the financial support details with our missions director and everything was a go. We told our friends at a huge party we threw and started going through our belongings to get things ready to sell since we couldn’t really take anything with us. We also decided we wouldn’t start TTC until we were 2 months out from returning to the US.

Well – 1 week later on a Thursday my cycle hadn’t visited... I mean I had ZERO symptoms, which was very, very, very odd since I am like clockwork every month. So I looked back at my trusty Fertility Friend calendar and it wasn’t looking like I could be pregnant, so I figured I was stressed out. It was 11:15 am and I got up from the desk at work, sped over to Walgreens, nervously purchased a pregnancy test and headed to their bathroom. I was crying, and shaking, and really just trying not to vomit. I had the worse panic attack right there, in the Walgreens bathroom. But I took the test – immediate positive. So I sat there crying for quite some time. Why? Well.. I’m a planner, and I felt like I had just ruined God’s plan for us to go to Mexico. I had to overcome a LOT of shame in those first few weeks afterward. So now it’s about 11:30am and I come back to work. I’m sitting in my car and I call my husband who instantly knew we were pregnant – he didn’t even know I left the building. He was STOKED! I was so surprised by his reaction it scared me really. So we made an appt with our PCP for 2 hours later to see if I was indeed pregnant… and the doctor told us we were very, very pregnant.

So here we are - expecting little Ava 11/23. She’s the first great-grandchild and the first grandchild… so you know what that means. I am so excited – I never thought I’d be able to have children due to my really tainted past – but God has different plans. We are thrilled, and overjoyed, and enjoying our very uneventful (in doctor’s terms) pregnancy.
Here are a few pics over the years of myself and Avery. Thanks for reading through all of that.. I know it was a whopper.

You didn't scare me off. I am just joining the fun. What an amazing intro. And BTW I'm glad your a "Jesus fanatic" or "Jesus Freak" as we are often called. What leads you to wanting a birth the way God had intended? Or is it just that reason itself?

Thanks everyone... it was a lot getting that intro into words. But thankfully I'm a pretty wordy person - so it was FUN!

Melissa - it's funny that you ask about more kids. My parents keep telling us we need to go ahead and start planning for #2 because Ava belongs to them. I love my parents - so honest. We plan on having another child... maybe in 1.5 - 2 years if everything is looking okay. But who knows - Ava wasn't supposed to make her appearance for another 5 years Wink

LOL!!! Yup, Joss wasn't supposed to show up for a couple more years either.... Sounds like God gave us both our little girls for his own reasons! Smile I am glad HE knows what the plan is, cause some days I really wonder hahaha....

Yea.. I have NO idea what's happening anymore. Everytime I think I maybe, sort of, kind of, if you squint your eyes and turn your head to the left have it figured out - WHAM! Everything changes.

Angela... our birth choice changed drastically from what we initially set out to do. When we found out we were pregnant I was already saying ' yep, natural all the way baby!' But then I realized I only wanted to do it so I could be like those smug moms you know who say 'oh yes darling, I went natural and it was a breeze. I've had more pain getting my legs waxed.' So after I realized I just wanted bragging rights I decided screw that - epidural for me, I don't need to be a hero.

Then we took a class based off the book Birthing from Within.

Whoa... everything, and I mean EVERYTHING changed. It's amazing what information, research, and the truth can do to a persons thinking. I'm all for an intervention free natural birth. And dh is even more stoked about it.

I had my 36 week 2 day appointment on Tuesday and I gained 3 pounds... in a week. I've only gained 28 pounds total this entire pregnancy.. but the 3 pound jump coupled with my blood pressure was a little high and they found protein in my urine has me at home today doing a 24 urine collection.

Joy. But at least I get to work from home today. I couldn't imagine keeping a cooler of urine in my fridge at work. They already eat and drink what's not theirs - they'd be in for a real treat with this one

1st - I never knew how much you and I have in common! Jus and I met while I was working for our churches young adult ministry and he was our volunteer graphic artist.

2nd - No one ever has heard of Return to Oz! How has this movie not gotten around...I love it!

3rd - Your entire story had me crying...I love it! TFS

I loved your intro Dede. I'm a religious person, too, and I really think God's plan was for you to become Ava's mom and dad right now! Your pictures are really cute, too!

Are you getting enough protein? Eating more protein can help with the symptoms you're having. I know it doesn't make sense that you would spill protein into your urine when you aren't getting enough, but that's the way it works.

So eating more protein counters my proteiny urine? Awesome.. I guess it's the same concept as when you're retaining water. Thanks Brittany - I'm about to enjoy another tall cold glass of organic milk now.

I'm having a GREAT evening. Don't know what made it great, but it has been. Cooked dinner, did some walking around my living room to get my activity in, and now I'm enjoying how clean my husband got our living room - AWESOME!

So I just dropped off my bucket o' urine at the doctors. I just have to tell you, waking up to get to the fridge every 2 - 3 hours left me very little time for sleep.

I'm pooped this morning. Really just trying to make it until noon so I can take a nap.

Thank you so much for your wonderful intro, I feal bad it's taken me so long to catch up on you. I am also a religious person and your story was very inspireing. The Lord has a way of makeing sure we don't get it in our heads that we're in control:) Congrats on your little miracle, and your pictures where a lot of fun. I look forward to following your story. Try and relax and take it easy, I'm guessing they will be watching you for pre-e from here on out. Let us know what you hear from your doctor.

It's officially about 3:30 here in Georgia and I had my follow-up appointment from the 24 urine collection last Thursday.

The good news is I'm now at home... during my appointment my doc said my maternity leave needed to start immediately :woohoo: I didn't gain any weight this time around, and I have zero swelling or water retention.

The not so great news... my protein levels have steadily increased since my appointment last Tuesday as well as the 24 hr collection, my BP is steadily going up, and my uric acid levels are a little high for a pregnant woman.

But my kidneys are working wonderfully he said - perfectly actually. Baby is head down and ready to go, and I'm 1cm dilated.

He said I don't have any red flags for pre-e, but I do have all the yellow flags. He always asks if I'm having headaches, dizziness, or seeing spots - to which I reply none of the above. I feel fine.

So yellow flags had him talking about inducing me tonight in order to give birth tomorrow or Thursday. Of course we say... ummm, no thanks. We compromised - I'm now home on my left side taking it easy (never thought my job was exactly stressful until all this started happening), and we go back on Friday to see how things are looking. They're again running some more blood work on me to see if anything has changed since last Thursday.

I swear.... it's so heartbreaking thinking of it.... but I lost 24 pounds and got my blood pressure to perfect before we got pregnant. I haven't gained a huge amount of weight and had ZERO issues this entire pregnancy. Then we hit T-20 and it all hits the fan.

Oh well...

That's my update.

Hi! Just getting caught up here. Great intro! I am not religious per-say but I do believe in God and have seen in my own ways the mystery and beauty in his plans. I can't wait to follow more of your journy.

Maybe I've missed it but I'm curious, why have you chosen natural child birth?

I tested for this pregnancy in the Walmart bathroom! It was grose but I needed to know and waiting the 15 min drive home was too long for me!

I totally understand not wanting to wait the drive home.. there's no way I could have waited, and I work 5 minutes from Walgreens Smile

I am choosing natural childbirth because I really want to give my daughter a fighting chance and not bring her into the world heavily medicated. I was a very sick child and was on a slew of different meds from the time I was a baby until I was in my mid 20's and addicted to pain killers and anti-depressants. I also want to experience the exhilaration natural childbirth gives.

I've talked to so many ncb and med-birth moms... the stories from the ncb mothers are so inspiring and triumphant. My entire medical life I've had doctors doing stuff to me - whether my fault or not, that's debateable... I don't want my daughter to start life out that way as well.

When I was on anti-depressants all I had to do was complain a little about something else and I got more pills for a different condition. I feel like I'd been on mute with my feelings and emotions for soooo many years - I want to experience this fully dangit!

Okay... getting off my soapbox now Smile

Sounds like lots of rest and relaxation will be helpful for you, Dede. Here's hoping the red flags for pre-e stay away. From what I've read, pre-e is preventable and often treatable in its early stages through good nutrition and stress control. Good luck, I hope you can keep it from getting bad enough for induction to become necessary.

So I love being home.

Yep. First day and I already am in love with it. My AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME dh stayed up late last night getting the sofa bed ready with 2 end tables and some paperwork/ projects I need to work on ready for me. He even had my laptop geard up and ready to go. I swear I adore that man.

The only downside of me being home is our jack russell Bali had her canine dental cleaning yesterday and she's a bit of a baby today. It's quite a sight - me all pregnant and laid out on the sofa bed with a little whiney baby puppy next to me. Poor darling.

I feel great otherwise though.
