Welcome to your lodge! Congrats on making it this far! We're excited to share your journey.
OMG! It's already time for you to have a lodge? I swear it was just yesterday that you made your appearance over here and you were just 5 or 6 weeks pregnant. WOW! time sure flies! Congrats on your lodge!
Yay! Welcome tp your lodge!
Yeah!!!!! So glad you have your lodge now. You are almost to the 37 week mark, can't wait for you to be officially full-term!
Wow, I cannot believe I am already this far along. This pregnancy has just flown by for me. I will start this off with giving a little bit of background imfo.
Both me and DH (who for now on will be Finn since I hate using DH) are both graduate students at Iowa State. He just finished his masters in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and now is beginning a PhD in the same field. For his masters he looked at the effect of sprawl on amphibian populations in the greater Des Moines region. Now he is switching gears and looking at the effects of prairie restoration on grassland birds in Southern Iowa.
I am the eternal masters student. I started off in Landscape Architecture, but then m program fell through on me so after some time off I am back in school studying Biological illuastration. My dream is to write and illustrate childrens field ecology guides.
Iowa State is what brought us here to Ames, but neither one of us is from here. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH and Finn is a San Fransisco native. We met in college in Maine at a small (250 students) liberal arts college in Bar Harbor. So now we are here until Finn finishes his PhD and then who knows where. He wants to be a college professor so we have no clue where we will end up.
We are both really excited for the birth of little Hawkes. he will be our first child, but this is not our first pregnancy. I had a m/c two days before Christmas of last year which only made us realize how much more we wanted kids. We are planning a homebirth with a wonderful mw who we both adore, so we are really excited. Our biggest fear is having to go to the hospital.
So that is a brief overview....
:woohoo: Congrats on your lodge!
I look forward to sharing this journey with you, birth buddy!!!
Congrats on your lodge! I can't wait to follow the rest of your pregnancy.
We are TOO much alike! We're both working on our masters, we both had previous miscarriages that made us realize how much we really wanted a baby, and we're both having a homebirth with a midwife (sometime soon hopefully!!!). Crazy. Welcome to your lodge - these last few weeks seem to crawl, so maybe we can entertain each other!
Welcome to your lodge!! :wavehello:
Welcome to your lodge!
Yay, another lodge! I'm excited about following your story.
whoo hoo welcome to your lodge!!!! so exciting you will be holding your little babe so soon.
Overall this pregnancy has been treating me pretty well, but last night was no fun. I was just sitting on my couch minding my own business when all of a sudden the room just started spinning and would not stop. This is the third instance of vertigo I have had in the past week and it is horrible. Nothing helps and I do not know why it comes on. Then the vertigo makes me panic, and the panic makes me dizzier and it turns into a vicious cycle. All I can do is sit on the couch and not move, no fun. Usually it goes awa after a few hours, but it seems to still be here this morning, but just naggingly. I am at a complete loss on this one. Anyone know anything that helps, or had this happen before. I have gotten this before with a bad case of PMS, so I do think it is hormonal just not sure how to manage it.
I've had this happen just recently. It happened 2x in one day. I was sitting on the couch and closed my eyes for a sec and I started to feel really dizzy. Then I was laying on the bed and it felt like the room was spinning. I got really scared, but it seemed to go away after resting for awhile. It hasn't happened since, and I don't know why I felt like that. The only thing I can think of is either b/p issues or low blood sugar. I didn't call the dr about it because it hasn't happened again. Sorry you freaked out, it is scary.
Well I was feeling chilled so I went and took my temp and it was 100.3, so I called my mw. She said she thought I was dehydrated and told me to drink two quarts of water and see if I feel better. Well I did that I am slightly less dizzy and temp is down. Who knows, I drink at least 4 quarts a day, but maybe I need more. I am also congested so maybe I am fighting something. Right now I am just trying to ignore it. Eating makes no difference so I do not think it is my blood sugar.
Yuck! Sorry your world is spinning. That would be really scary. Hopefully your cold is just draining you of fluids and the water will help?!
I can't remember, are you staying at home lately? I can't imagine you are in classes this term...
Congratulations on getting your lodge. Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well, I hope the water makes a difference and you're better soon.
Hi Drake! I have been thinking of you. Welcome and congrats on your lodge. We should still try to sneak in that cup of tea/coffee when you are down. I'm looking forward to sharing your journeya nd I am very excited for you. Sending you only the best vibes for a still and peaceful night.
Welcome to your lodge. It won't be long now before you have that little one in your arms.
Thought I would give an update. I am doing much better. I spent Tuesday in bed sleeping and felt much better on Wednseday, so figured it was a bug. Wednesday was my 36/37 weeks appointment. It went well all was good and I had the GBS done and my first internal. I know it means nothing, but I just wanted to know what my body was doing. I was just slightly dialated (1-2) and getting soft. It was just nice to know my body does know what to do. All in all it was a good appointment. After the appointment I finally got to meet up with Erika. We had have been trying and we finally made it work. I had a great time it is always nice to put a face to a name. So Wednesday was a good outing overall. I am excited today since I hit 37 weeks and now am in the homebirth safe zone, also another of the couples from my Bradley class had their baby. That was exciting news, and they had a natural vaginal delivery, yay! That makes the secound couple to go early from my class. I am feeling good physically just tired and need to get the motivation together to get some of the things checked off my to do list. Especially school work, I have been really slacking with my schoolwork and need to get back on top of it. Hope everone is having a good Friday.
:woohoo: to getting to 37! It does feel great to know you are in "the zone" I had a nice time getting to meet you and Finn. It was fun and a treat to get to meet someone off this board.
Checkin on you! Hope you are feeling well
So glad you made it to the 37-week safe zone. It sounds like your numbers are right on track. I totally understand how reassuring it is to know that your body is moving in the right direction.
Wow! It sounds like you are still in classes. That is amazing to me. I can't imagine having to concentrate on studying, etc now.
I can't believe your'e still taking classes too! I'm teaching a class right now, and I'll probably miss the end of the semester (I definately won't be around for finals) and I've been worrying about getting stuff ready for my replacement. Luckily two week's worth of lectures are taken up by student presentations.
:woohoo: on hitting 37 weeks!
A better late than never welcome to your lodge! I enjoyed reading your post introducing yourself. I hope the vertigo is better and that you are feeling well. Enjoy these last few weeks of pregnancy...it all changes so quickly once the baby arrives! Take care.
Ugh, doesn't it completely suck still being in classes? I'm only making it to about half of mine right now - it's horrible!
Making it to 37 weeks is definitely an accomplishment - it makes you feel so much better that you're home free for a homebirth.
That's so odd that 2 couples from your Bradley class have been early. I read that us Bradley mama's usually go overdue because we have nice healthy bodies and babies. For our class, it has been true. One couple went 2 weeks overdue before getting induced (and ended up with a perfect, natural vaginal delivery) and here I am, overdue! Hopefully you stick with the flow of your class and go early though! Being overdue stinks!
So we are pretty much set on getting the house ready for the birth. I have everthing off my mw's list but food. I am going to make some chili tomorrow to freeze for after then I just need to get food for me during labor. I have a short list, but I am having trouble of thinking of things that would be good. Most of what I have thought of are sweet foods and I do not have a strong stomach for sweets, so want some more salty/ savory options. I am having trouble of thinking of easy on the stomach/ energy helping salty foods. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
This is the list I have so far:
• Fruit juice
• honey sticks
• Italian ices
• Fruit to freeze
• Luna bars
• ice (chipped if possible)
• chicken broth
How about granola bars and/or a nut roll kinda of thing. That was the only thing I ended up eating during labor. Oh and last minute we were looking for something with caffiene and sugar in it. out MW told Dh to find a Coke or something like that. IT was the first time in 5 years I had a regular soda! But it gave the last bit of energy i needed. up till that point I was drinking water and gatorade and i needed more sugar.
Would string cheese be okay? That's a fairly convenient snack that isn't sweet.
Did I see that today was your birthday? Or am I crazy? If so, happy day to you! How are you feeling?
Yes today is my birthday. I am actaull feeling prett good right now. He was really active last night and we were worried he went transverse for awhile, but now he is back to lying on my left side with his bum in my ribs. I am looking foward to this evening since our birthday tradition here is for Finn to make me whatever I want for dinner. I requested salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and artichokes. I am really looking foward to that. And he promised no schoolwork tonight, so we will actually get to spend some time together, yeah. I am just waiting for him to get from class and then it is off to lunch.
 Happy Birthday!
That dinner sounds SO YUMMY! Have fun with your DH tonight!
Dinner sounds fabulous, hope you have a good night tonight!
It's been really fun reading your lodge and getting to know you. How exciting that it's getting so close!
Your food list looks pretty good - the only things I would add are hard candies to suck on (I heard your mouth gets really dry) and a fizzy soda like ginger ale. My midwife said lots of women want something carbonated to help them burp and calm their stomachs. Lately, I've been mixing ginger ale and gatorade a lot, and I'm addicted!!!!!
Thanks for the suggestions, I added them to my list. I had a great birthday and Finn got me the best birthday present of all. He gave me a gift certificate for a massage therapist in town who specializes in maternity massage. Now I just ned to make an appointment. I had my almost 38 week appointment today and that went well. All is looking good and he has definately dropped. I am GBS negative, so that was good news. We talked some about infant care and made me feel even better with our decsion to use her for newborn care (she does whole family care). So that was good. I am doing well just exstemely tired. I swear I am sleeping constantly, and when awake I am still tired.
Happy Belated Birthday!!!!
I'm sure that GBS negative result took a lot off your mind.
Glad everything is going so well... and thought it was really neat to read that your studies are around the biological/ecology fields. It's neat to see others in the same fields of study. Good luck with finishing up your classes.
Hope you are enjoying the end of your pregnancy..I look forward to hearing more...
Hi Drake and happy belated birthday to you! It sounds like Finn showed you a great day.
It is fun reading though your lodge, you sound wonderfully prepared to meet your little guy and I will enjoy hearing your updates
Today was a really good day. I went for my maternity massage which hurt at first, but by the end I was so relaxed and it felt really good. Then Finn and I went out to lunch and did some windowshopping. We went to one of the paint your own pottery places since my friend is throwing me a kind of blessingway celebration and wanted me to pick something for everyone to work on. I am thinking a giant piggy bank. When we got home there was a birthday card from my FIL and step-mother IL with a 200 dollar check. I was shocked, I thought they had forgotten my birthday (has happened in the past). That was a very nice surprise and now I can finish paying my mom back for our new couch and get myself a set of nursing PJ's. Finn and I have been trying to spend as much time together as possible since this is our last weekend alone. Next week my mom comes, and she will be here till after Thanksgiving. It is such a crazy thought to me that we are really this close. I feel him move and I know he is in there, but it still does not feel real to me at all. I am not sure it will until he is here, I still just cannot comprehend that we have actually created a human being, it just seems so unreal.
I completely understand your feelings on it not feeling real. It doesn't feel real to me either. I keep saying to my DH, "I can't believe we're really having a baby!"
I'm sure it will be all too real soon enough.
Yeah for you!!! Sounds like a great Birthday to me. Anything involving a massage sounds great to me
Enjoy these last days with Finn even though you may be feeling huge and uncomfy. I think the guys really get neglected postpartum for awhile (and rightfully so IMO) but still they need the kudos too - life will change and there is no going back. It will be an adventure of a lifetime.
Happy belated birthday! I'm glad the massage worked for you.
When my DS was born, it took me a good 6 weeks to really "get" the reality of being a mommy. Don't be afraid to give yourself as much time as you need!
It sounds like you've been having a good week. I am having a lot of similar feelings. I understand that there is a baby inside me, but can't really picture what the future will be like either. You sound ready though, at least as much as one can be beforehand. Enjoy being alone with you DH!
When is your blessingway going to happen? I'd love to hear about what different things your friends do to welcome you to labor and motherhood!!
Just checking in. I had a weird dream this mornng with you in it going into labor. You were wlaking around totally jsut another typical preggo day and wham! labor kicked in and you were pushing you had the baby in no time - the weird part of the dream is you were laboring in my mother's sink and got stuck - yeah.....did I mention I'm having wierd preggo dreams.... hopefully the fast part is right on and the sink...well.....not so much anyways, thinking of you!
No baby yet, but he feels like he is getting ready. He has been getting lower by the day. That is funny about your dream, hey maybe it is a sign. If so it would be the secound one in the last week. On the way to my mw appointment last week I had the first.
A little background is needed for this one. We are naming him Jacob Hawkes, but he will go by Hawkes. The name has two reasons behind it. First hawkes is my grandmothers maiden name, who I really wanted to honor. Also her father George Hawkes was from Iowa and was a circuit court judge here, so we thought that was a great connection. The other reason is when I was about five or six weeks pregnant I was sitting eating breakfast in our old study (now his room) and I looked over and saw a juvenile hawk land in the yard next to me. Now I have never seen a bird of prey in our town before. He just sat there and looked around and then flew off. From looking it up I am pretty sure it was a Cooper's hawk. Which was neat because Finn's middle name is Cooper. Well as soon as that bird landed I had a piece come over me and I knew everything was going to be okay with this pregnancy (I have a previous loss). I have never had an exsperience like that before, it was really amazing. So when looking through family names and we saw Hawkes, we just knew that had to be his name.
So last week when we were driving to the mw appointment I was looking out the window and spotted a hawk sitting on a wire (normal enough, but this time it just felt different), it made me feel like he would be making his appearence soon enough.
So hey maybe all these signs will lead up to something. I am really hoping for November seventh, but we will see. I cannot get the number seven out of my head for some reason. On November seventh Finn and I will have been together for seven ears, so it would be very special. We will see, and it is all up to him.
What a neat story! I think it would be so meaningful if he decided to show up on your anniversary. Glad you're feeling good!!
I've had experiences like that, too. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't, but they always bring comfort. I can't wait to see how it all turns out for you!
Wow - that would be cool if the little one decided the 7th was the day.
Hey, that's election day - better fill out an absentee ballot just in case!
Hi Drake, I've just had the opportunity to sit down and read through your lodge. I give you credit for being able to attend classes and pay attention while being pregnant. I was finishing up my master's program when I discovered that I was pregnant and that last month and a half of school was so hard between the excitement, the nausea, etc.
Before I got to your last entry, I was planning on telling you that I liked the name you chose for your son. It takes on a special meaning now that you have explained it. I hope the last hawk you saw was a sign that your hawk will be spreading his wings and arriving soon.
It sounds like your maternity massage was a wonderful birthday present. I hope that you are able to be comfortable and rest in the upcoming days. I look forward to your updates!
That's a neat story about your son's connection with hawks. I love stuff like that.
