Welcome to your lodge, Erin! I look forward to reading your story and getting to know you as you share your journey with us through your entries.
Hey I know you! Congrats on your lodge - I'm so excited for you!
Thanks so much!!!! I can hardly belieev that I finally get to have a lodge here! Horray for that!
Let me see, what can I tell you about myself!
My name is Erin, I am 25 years old. I am married to a wonderful Brazilian man named Toni, we've been married for 2 and a half years. We are currently living in Canada, working in leadership at a group home for teenage boys. But we do expect to return to Brazil at some point. We are expecting our first little one (a surprise!) in just under 2 weeks. ( )
We had a miscarriage last fall, so the beginning of this pregnancy was a very fearful time for me. Fortunately, all is well and it has been relatively uneventful.
I have really gone back-and-forth in my planning for the birth. There are so many opinions out there on so many issues, that it really took some time for me to decide what in my heart I truly believed to be the best option for us. We have decided to try for an unmedicated birth in the hospital. Our Dr. is extremely supportive, and that has been a real blessing to us. I have also finally come to a place in myself where I know that I am going to try for the unmedicated birth, but that if for some reason I am not able to do it, I will know that I gave it my best shot. I am going to do what I can, and see how it goes. I know that if I absolutely commit myself to doing a natural birth, and for some reason am not able to carry it through, I know that I personally would struggle with that and feel guilty that I wasn't able to live up to the standard that I had set for myself. All of my energies and thoughts will be focussed in giving it my all. I guess that all I can do is try!
At our 38 week appointment yesterday our Dr. did an internal exam and said that I am already 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced. He said that he could feel that the baby's head was already very very low. All day I've been having lots of braxton hicks and backache, so I'm really hoping that maybe this baby's starting to get ready to meet the world!
(sorry that ended up so long... if you made it to the end, I applaud you! :clappy: )
Hey there Erin - how ya feeling?
Thinking of you!
I'm glad to read that you are trying to go natural, my feelings were similar to yours. I'll tell you it wasn't as bad as I thought. Of course, we are each different. The hardest part was transition, but by then you are already too far along for drugs anyway...
How are you feeling today? It's been a long time since you updated.....hmmmm. Let us know what's up when you can. Wishing you all the best!
Erin, congrats on getting a lodge! I recognize you from the PAL board and lurk here alot too, but I never wanted to post because I feel like you - that I want a natural birth, but don't know if I am as dedicated/strong as other women on this board and so didn't know if I should contribute. Thanks for expressing you feelings so well, I really related to that. I hope you are still feeling pretty good and keep us posted on how the last couple of weeks are going.
Erin! Where are yoooouuuuuuu?!
I'm so sorry that it's been ages since I updated. I wasn't really sure if I should, sometimes I don't feel as confident in myself or in my abilities to do this naturally as you all do... so I was feeling a little out of place.
Right now I am really having a hard time. We are at 40w6d today, and at my appointment on Friday the Dr. was talking about medical inductions. He has us scheduled in for Tuesday if the baby doesn't come before then. I am finding this SO HARD to handle. It's as if all of my dreams of going for a natural childbirth just went right out the window. The thought of induction scares the he** out of me, and I just wish I could change it and do SOMETHING to make this little one come.
We've been trying to do all that we can... walking, sex, spicy foods, etc... and nothing seems to have helped. Today for the first time I have been more seriously researching natural induction methods on-line and for the first time ever am thinking about trying castor oil. Am I crazy??? What else can I try??? I just want to do whatever I can to try to avoid a medical induction. I'm so confused, and starting to get discouraged.
Anyone have any suggestions or words of wisdom???
Aw, Erin. :bigarmhug:
It's not like we're superwomen, or anything. I know one of the ways I handle pain is to complain about it, so you can bet I'll be complaining to DH a ton when I'm in labor!
You can still have a natural childbirth if you are medically induced. My mom was induced with pitocin with me, and she didn't use any painkillers at all.
Try reading some of the birthstories posted at the top of the board. I seem to remember there was at least one birth story where the mom was induced with pitocin and she was able to give birth without an epidural.
Thanks Elly. I really needed to hear that.
Hi Erin, First of all you can do this!! Look inside your heart and you will find the strength and no matter how tired you are, know that your body will have this incredible amount of energy when it needs it! some thoughts on induction. Well, first off you could tell him you want to wait till 42 weeks. How accurate do you think your "due date" is?? Something else to try in adition to exercise and sex.... is breast pumping for nipple stimulation if you have an electric pump it will far more effecient than you are DH nipple twiddling. Other thoughts to consider. I know in your earlier post you said you were 1cm dialated and 50% effaced so you are ripe. You could ask the doctor to sweep your membranes on Tuesday and give you some time. If he is pressing you you could tell him you'd be willing to do an ultrasound and make sure amniotic fluids are good ect....
Also, you don't HAVE to start an induction with pitocin. You can request that your water be broken and wait for labor to kick in. (the key then is not letting staff push you to do the pit. they often get antsy and want to get it started right away.) This can be a game though. Find out from your doc. If the hospital you are birthing at is going to "put you on a clock" once your water is broken. If you are already dialating and really ripe breaking your water may be all your body needs to set things off. My girlfriend had to do this with her last pregnancy she was 41 and a half week and her amniotic fluid was really really really low (2). She had to abandon her homebirth and instead of pitocin she opted to break the water and wait. her labor kicked in within 2 hours and the baby was in her arms in 5 hours. So induction does not = pitocin. The doctor can reccomend an induction on Tuesday - the ultimate decesion is up to you. Take a deep breath I still think you have a lot of choices. Your due date is just a number on a page...your body knows when to birth. Trust your isntincts! I am sending you strength along with a :bighug:
I agree with Erica, I had what was called a non chemical induction with my first son. I was 4cent and 70%effaced. The dr broke my water and I went into labor quite easily. The nurses were very antsy about starting pictocin even before the dr came to break my water. They called it giving me a head start  I was adament about not recieving any pictocin.
It can be done. You can be induced without drugs.
I mentioned this on IM but wanted to post publicly too. In my case, my water had already broken but my ctx petered out when I got to the hospital. I did get Pitocin, but I made sure the nurse ramped it up as slowly as she could so that my body would more easily adjust to it. That's exactly what happened and I was able to handle the ctx using the hot tub and position changes. GL!
Congrats on your new baby! Can't wait for the details!
