Julya's (Baby_Vol) lodge!

Surprise! I'm a couple of days early. I decided to do that because your first birth was earlier than expected. Besides, I had to be the one to start this.

Congrats on making it this far!

Tell us everything about your first birth, your birthing plans this time, how you've been feeling, all the details!

Intro

Thanks for joining me on this journey!! I wouldn't be as prepared as I am this time without this wonderful board! I'm so happy to have found you!

The meeting

My husband and I are high school sweethearts. We met and started dating when I was 17 years old, the summer before my senior year. He was 19 and a sophomore in college. We went to the same school. He was a football player and I was in flag corps (the girls who twirl the flags with the band at football halftime).

We both worked at Kroger together one summer. We flirted all summer long, and finally, in August, he asked me out. Smile Our first date was the dollar movies and McDonalds! LOL! He made my heart flutter from the first time I saw him, and I couldn't be happier.

Two years later, he got down on one knee at the lake beside my parent's house ...pulled out a beautiful diamond ring ..and said "Julya, my whole life I've prayed that God would send me someone special. God sent me you. Will you marry me?" Wow! I completely cried b/c it was a total surprise! I was on cloud 9 for months! hehe!

We needed to wait until at least one of us got out of college and had a "real job" before getting married, so two years later ....we said our vows. (I still had one year of college left).

The wedding

We got married at my church on May 26th, 2001. I was 20, he was 22. It was a big ole southern Baptist church wedding, and I loved every minute of it! I truely felt like Cinderella that day!

Me and my Dad (he passed away just after David was born ...I miss him. Sad )

Full pic of dress:

Early years

We were young, married and broke ...so we lived in a tiny little postage stamp apartment on the "not so great" side of town. It was small, and cheap, but we were in Heaven! We were together, ya know?

A year later, we moved to a townhouse. I was trying to get my career going before having babies.

Once I signed my first contract with a big station, we started TTC. We had been married 4 years ...5 when David was born. Smile

David!

We wanted a baby for a long time! We got pregnant on our second cycle of TTC. We were both so happy!!

28 weeks with David

I was completely mainstream before having David, but while pregnant with him ...a lady at my Mom's church died after having an epidural. The woman was older, she'd wanted a baby for a long time, it was her first baby. She and her husband had only been married about a year. She got a severe headache after her epi ....later, they found out she got an infection in her spine and there was nothing the hospital could do to help. Now, her husband is raising their little one alone. Sad So ...that shook me up, and made me start researching NCB.

I didn't know about this board at the time, but I was active on my birth board. I did some research on my own, and took NCB classes through the local birth center. I read some books ....but we still decided to deliver in the hosptial. My Mom had a horrible childbirth story with me (she and I both almost died), so that greatly influenced me. Part of me wanted to go to the birth center, but the story I knew of my own birth scared me. So, we went to the hospital.

David was born early, at 36 weeks. We didn't expect that because all the women in my family went late ...usually by two weeks. David was born on the day of his baby shower! LOL!

His birth was beautiful. It wasn't exactly what I planned, but still beautiful and spiritual in every way. I won't recount the entire story here ...but let's just say I was scared going in since he was pre-term and I couldn't calm down. I didn't have a doula, Dh was scared too ...all that tension lead to painful contractions, so I got the epidural. It was actually very nice, however it slowed labor -- lead to pitocen -- lead to baby being in distress b/c contractions were too powerful for him -- lead to an internal monitor (screws in baby's head) -- but finally, a vaginal birth (with episiotomy).

I'll NEVER forget the moment he was born!! It was magical!! I just ...wow ...words cannot describe the moment a baby is born! It's sooooo spiritual/beautiful/of another world! Dh and I both, we were in that world together! Of course, we forgot to take pictures of that exact moment! LOL! It's okay though because it's all in my memory. I actually think pausing to take pictures would have messed it up, but this time I may ask someone else to take some pics for us in the background. Wink

Tragedy

In the year after David was born, I lost both my Dad and my grandma. My Dad passed away from colon cancer when David was 5 months old. I was very close to my Dad, so that was hard.

9 months later, my grandmother (who was very youthful) died in a car crash. My little brother (age 14) was in the car as well. He has his seatbelt on; she did not. He walked away with only one scratch. She was thrown into the backseat ...body broken. Sad THAT was hard. Besides my Dad, I was closest to my grandma. I also worried about my brother ...being so young and just loosing his Dad.

Grandma (Mimi) is on the left:

We've had some healing time since then, but I still miss them both. Sad

Baby Apple

When David was about 18 months old, we decided we wanted to TTC again. David loves little ones, and this would be good timing for us, so we went for it. Smile Again, we got pregnant on our second cycle of trying.

We are being surprised on the gender, but David says he wants a "baby apple", so that's where the nickname comes from. LOL!

This time, I signed up at the birth center from day one. I *knew* after David's birth that I wanted to do all in my power to have a natural childbirth. I also wanted a water birth/to be able to eat/move ...all without fighting hosptial policy. I was super happy when Dh agreed!! Actually, he's most excited about being able to come home so soon after the birth. He didn't want us to be away from David too long.

33 week professional pictures from JC Penny's:

Finally, I have to share a picture of my little monkey ...David, age two. This is from his birthday. He is all excited about getting his favortie thing: dinosaurs!

Thanks for looking/reading!! I know it's a long intro ....it's been a long journey!

Wonderful intro! How scary about the woman who died from an epi. My mum nearly did. It froze her respiratory tract instead of her lower limbs. Yikes.

Any feelings on when this babe will arrive?

Danielle - yep, I'm in the journalism field. I work as a tv meteorologist/reporter.

35 and a half week midwife appointment

On Monday, I went for my 35 and a half week appointment at the birth center. I really do love that place! I feel so comfy there! I met a new midwife. She is filling in for the other midwife who just went on maternity leave. I really like her a lot!

We did the GBS swab. She said if it is positive, they give the hep lock and antibiotics at the center through IV every 4 hours. Not too bad. Of course, I hope it's negative.

My iron level was up a bit, but still a little low. She asked if I was taking my additional iron at the same time as my prenatals, and I was. She said the calcium can block the absorbancy of the iron, so she suggested taking my prenatals in the morning and my iron before bed.

My ankles have swollen a little, but not too bad.

I'm still hanging in there! It's funny because at this stage, everyone expects you to be so done/ready for baby to come out/ready to have induction/section/anything to not be pregnant. I'm the opposite of that though. I want baby to stay IN at least until May ...I'd really love to make to to my due date! David came at 36 weeks, and while I'm ready this time ...I'd just like to hang in there. I honestly enjoy being pregnant. I remember missing it so much after David was born. I'm just cherishing every moment. The big reason I want to make it to May is not only for the baby, but also because it will give me more time off with my husband this summer (he's a teacher). I'd love to have as much time as possible with him ...I'm taking 13 weeks of maternity leave, 6 of which are paid. Plus, David had major breastfeeding problems at first, and I hear a term baby may be able to nurse a little more efficently than a preterm baby.

Around here inductions are VERY common. Husbands of other Moms keep saying "how are you feeling?" ....which kind of drives me nuts b/c I can tell they want me to go into a sob story. I just smile real big and say "good, how are you feeling?" LOL! It always takes them back a little!! hehe!! Of course, these are the same men (men I work with) who think I'm insane for going to a birth center.

Good news about the appointment!

And what a great response you have to those men who keep asking how you're feeling. Sort of like "have you had a BM today?"

Glad the appt went well--hope you are GBS-!

I like your "how are YOU?" response, I'll have to try that one. Sometimes I feel like I should come up with a complaint when people ask even though I really do feel fine. Wink

Hey Julya, I can't believe it took me this long to come visit your lodge. Too many boards to keep up with now that my little guy is here. Anyway, I know you so well already but I love to read your stories. I never knew about that lady at your church who got an infection from the epi. I have heard stories that helped me make my NCB decision but never that bad of stories. That would have definatelty confirmed it for me. How sad!

Anyway, hope you don't have group B, I did with both my boys. Not a huge deal but it's just better to not have to worry about it.

I'm 36 weeks today! Yahoo That means I can deliver at the birth center from this point on ....I won't have to go to the hosptial to try to stop labor. That's a big milestone for me. Having to go in to stop labor with David was really hard on my body.

This time, I'm taking my vitamins, have a better diet, and resting more/drinking more water. I love the focus on nutrition that my midwife has, and I think it is helping me feel better this time. Smile

LOL ..Peggy! I'll work on that! Smile You don't have to put "lurker" in my lodge, btw. Wink I know you! hehe! LOVE that siggy pic of Miss Chloe!

As for me ...I think I'm in full on "lay on the couch as much as possible" mode.

I'm working today. During my lunch break, I wanted to make two simple erands. I had to go to the post office to mail a package and to Target to get my Mom a birthday present. By the time I was in line at Target, I was burning hot ...aching back ...and soar feet. I felt aweful! I was almost sure labor was about to begin if I couldn't sit down soon. Actually, I almost sat down right there in the floor of the store!

Geez. Okay ..I think Dh is going to have to run these kinds of errands for me from now until the baby is born. Well, unless I make it to 40 weeks and start really wanting the baby to come out.

So, for some of y'all who are at term and ready ...go to the post office and Target! Maybe it will work? Who knows?
