After stalking, lurking and posting around here for so long, I am so thrilled to have a lodge. I’m looking forward to joining the ranks of NCB mamas.

I’m Amy, just shy of 36. (ow!)

It was always assumed in my family that I’d be The Breeder. I was the one who took care of a brood of dolls and brought home every stray animal I found. When I was 5, I dressed up as a “mom” for Halloween – large sunglasses, clip on hoop earrings, a sequined handbag, a spritz of Shalimar – hey, it was the 70s and my mom was so groovy.

DH (Patrick) and I met in a bar over a pint of Guinness when we were both living in Washington DC. We dated for a short while, bought a house and moved to

Baltimore, MD, then got married. I had been hitting the snooze button on my biological alarm clock for years. It was finally the right time, but it didn’t happen for us. Fast forward a few years – IVF saves the day. Am I glad we did it? Heck yeah. Would I do it again? I’m not sure. I’m so thankful to have this baby; I don’t want to test the fertility gods by asking for another.

On our way to the doc for our 21 week u/s, we heard Van Morrison’s “St. Dominic’s Preview” on the radio. We decided right then that if it was a boy, he’d be Dominic. The second the sonographer put the wand on my belly – there he was in all his glory. No doubt, he was a Dominic. Dominic Francis (insert very Irish last name here). My mother-in-law says he could be a priest with that name. I relish the day I tell her we’re not baptizing him… but that’s another post.

Here we are. DH had just gotten back from the middle east - don't mind the beard.

Thanks for reading. Looking forward to sharing all the gory details.

Congrats on your lodge and getting to 36 weeks! Your intro is great and I'm curious to hear a bit about the MIL and baptism. Sounds like some back story there that I may be able to relate to with my MIL! LOL!
I look forward to following your journey.

LOL! I tried to talk DH into "Seamus" but no dice! My family is VERY Irish, I even hated giving up my last name when I got married to DH#2 (DH#1 had and equally Irish last name, so it wasn't so bad.)

How has everything been so far?

I love Seamus! DH already has a nephew with that name so it was out for us. :stpatricks:

Things are going swimmingly well. I've had a relatively uneventful pregnancy with lots of energy and very little discomfort. Maybe I'll save my hemorrhoid stories for later Wink

I'm just gearing up mentally now. I scribble down mantras when I see/hear them. Trying to do some positive mental imaging and working on Hypnobabies. Getting my nest all together and stocking it with all my favorite things. The baby's room is all set. It no longer smells like paint, but of fresh diapers and baby lotion. I have no fear of what's to come - only excitement.

I had my home visit last night and after the midwives left, I realized that for the large majority of my labor, DH and I will be alone. Just the two of us in our favorite place - home. He's ready; I'm ready. Hopefully Dominic is getting ready too.

I need to make some ipod play lists for the labor and birth. Is it wrong to welcome our first child into the world to Led Zeppelin?

Ugh, I can't sleep. It's getting harder and harder to stay asleep. DH is in the guest room at my request. He snores when he's been drinking.

Vanessa,

Thanks - The jeans are from Baby Style and I inherited them from my sister in law. They're the best maternity jeans I own and they're nice and long.

Morning, everyone!

This time change is throwing me off schedule - anyone else?

My oldest dog is really sick and it's stressing me out. She's a retired greyhound who we found on a breeding farm out in Oklahoma. She also happens to be the mother of one of our other greyhounds. We adopted her thinking we'd give her a few good years, but I think her spirit was broken long ago. She has still not bonded with us.

She's got bloody diarrhea and won't eat. Again. We've been through this with her three times before - hemmorhagic gastroenteritis (sp) and there is no cure, only treatment. The vet bill for this is around $600. I'm hoping she comes around wihtout IV treatment like she has before. She's still drinking so that's a good sign. I'll give her another day before I call the vet. It breaks my heart to see her in pain.

We had to put our cat down back in September. I don't want to lose her too! Here's the queen:

sorry to hear about your dog... but if she suffer you know you will make the best decision.... she must be hydrated dogs don't need food that much but they need water !!!
as long has she drink she is "ok" if she stop drinking and if you have IV fluid at home you don't need to it in the vein just under the skin is good enough.... on her back is better....

keep me posted and take care.... :bigarmhug:

Thanks Magali. This is good to know. I could handle giving it to her subcutaneously, but I don't think I could put a needle in a vein!

I'm about to run home to check on her.

I can't do it in the vein either but "subcu" is easy they jsut look funny witht heir "water ball" on their back for a while...

Mama-dog is doing SO much better today. She's eating now and I think she's on the mend. Thanks for the well-wishes.

I just went through a ton of FMLA/HR/Maternity leave paperwork - UGH! They certainly don't make it easy. I'm trying to get all this taken care of ahead of time so I can enjoy my first few weeks with Dominic. I need to figure out how to get a social security number for him... any thoughts on how to go about this?

I have a meeting with my doula at 4 then a BF class at 6. Patrick keeps asking me "why is it three hours?" I keep telling him I don't know, it's going to be three hours of t!t-talk, so he'll be fine. I know nothing about pumps and all that stuff, so I'm hoping it will be informative.

We are all set for our homebirth. I've got all my supplies, the pool, ipod playlists, food and drink. I feel like a timebomb in a way. I think it's finally sinking in for Patrick. He said, "it's like buying concert tickets months in advance, forgetting about them, then realizing you're going to a great show in a few weeks". It takes him a little longer to get excited about things.

My department had a little shower for me yesterday. They got the baby a bunch of baby books and a nice gift card to Target. On the flip side, I got all of the horror stories from the women. I had to bite my tongue the whole time. I've been on edge with that stuff lately and I'm afraid I'll be really ugly if I start to argue with them.

I'm starving today. Off to lunch - more later!!

I'm glad your dog is feeling better, that must be tuff to deal with. What did you have for lunch? Your DH cracks me up, mine would be the same way about the 3 hour class but your right he'll be fine. KUP on your appointment, hope it's great.

I'm glad your dog is doing better. For social security number stuff, this may help: http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ I'm glad you got some good stuff at your baby shower. Sorry to hear about the negative birth stories. I hated that when I was pregnant. I'm so excited to read about your birth. You don't hear about very many first-timers who chose homebirths. I hope it goes well for you.

Hi everyone,

I had a great meeting with my doula yesterday afternoon. She is such a neat lady. She teaches Hypnobabies, but I'm doing the home study course. I have to admit, I am so bad at "homework" and haven't really gotten into it. I love the concept and feel like I have a good foundation. I got lost on the deepening part of it. Since this is my first birth, part of me doesn't want to limit myself to a "method". The idea of being vocal (growling primally, haha) and very much alert is appealing. We'll see!!

I'm so ready. Ready physically, mentally, emotionally. I don't want to rush him out before he's ready; I'm just anxious to finally meet him. This has been such a long time coming.

DH and I had our BFing class last night. We were a little disappointed with it. The instructor was a lactation consultant at the hospital where it was held and it was obviously very much geared towards hospital births only. She was very open minded about our choices though, which I appreciated. The class itself was more dealing with the problems of BFing rather than method. They even had a section on supplementation. Sad If anything, I'm even more determined now to BF exclusively.

I started my 3000mg of EPO today. I have no idea what's going on with my cervix, but if I'm feeling flexible tonight I'm going to try to check it. Smile Does anyone have any advice on how to get to it? Not sure if I can get my arm around my belly!

Sorry I talk about my dogs so much (they're family!), but they are acting differently this week. Like they know something is going to happen soon. I'm fascinated by their reaction to this pregnancy.

Oh, I have some nursery pics that I'll upload tonight.

Congratulations on your lodge! You're not that far ahead of me! I'm in the same situation with the Hypnobabies, I've been "studying" it for a couple weeks but I'm not totally dedicated to it like I should be Smile

I feel ya! At DH's work shower all the ladies told me their horror stories about birth and how I will want the epi as I walk in the door. They all just kept saying "TAKE THE SHOT". Every time I would go to say something someone would yell out "TAKE THE SHOT" and interupt me. I just had to grin and bear it since it was DH's coworkers...but man was I so bothered.

Thanks Jenn. I love orange.

I just got back from the midwife 37 week appt. Dominic is definitely head down (good news), but sunny side up now (bad news). I have to spend some time on my hands and knees rocking every day to get him to flip over. Little bugger.

Also she said he's not engaged yet and has a big head. She smooshed around on my belly a lot and said he's about 7-7.5lbs now. And I have 2.5 weeks to go.:eek::eek:

Looks like Patrick will get his wish for a big bruiser of a kid!

I guess Patrick should be happy Smile I hope he's not late and too big! A friend of mine in labor as we speak and her baby didn't engage until they were getting ready to prep her for a c/s! Sounds like he's healthy and that's what matter most, you'll do great when the time comes!

Thanks for checking in on me. I have nothing new to report. I'm 38 weeks today and no signs of impending labor.

After two nights of blowing me off, I made DH have sex with me last night, haha. I think he wound up having a good time. Wink I'm walking, taking EPO and RRL tea, but I know Dominic will show up when he's ready.

My younger brother has been calling every day. He's really excited to be an uncle and said he'll hop on a train as soon as we tell him he can come down. It's cute. I do like to freak him out by telling him all about mucous plugs and afterbirth. Ah, the joys of being an older sister. Biggrin

A friend of mine is 40w2days and is going in for an induction tomorrow. It bums me out to hear this. She's only doing it to fit into her maternity leave better, not for a medical reason. She's been very respectful of our decisions, so I need to keep my mouth shut about hers. Still... ugh...

Gosh, I wish I had some news to report. This is turning into a really boring lodge! Smile

I went for a long walk last night under the upcoming full moon. It was really peaceful and calming. DH and I DTD again last night and I had a tiny bit of blood this morning, but nothing to write home about. Curiosity got the best of me this morning and I tried to check myself, but I can't even find my cervix at this point. Has anyone had any luck with self-checks? I have a midwife appointment tomorrow; maybe she'll offer to check. Part of me doesn't want to ask (don't want to jinx myself).

My inlaws, et al are coming to town this weekend for the Notre Dame v. Navy game. I've already told DH that no one, and I mean NO ONE, is coming over to our house. We're not hosting anything, no one is staying with us, etc. Sounds b*tchy, but I can't deal with anyone right now. I am in Mama Bear mode, big time. Since I couldn't really give two craps about football, my sister and I are going to meet up for lunch on Saturday. Vietnamese! Bring on the hottest of the hot! I hope it jumpstarts something.

I think I touched on my MIL in another post. She's just a kook. She sent us some little undershirts for the baby... that have ruffles on them. She knows we're having a boy. I don't get her. Maybe I'll tell her we've changed the baby's name to Barack and watch her head spin around and completely implode. hee hee hee... If she sends me one more frickin St. Gerard prayer card :violent2:

Ahhh, I'm sorry your MIL is so crazy! I'm sure she just means well, and why on earth she sent your baby girl clothes is beyond me:) Good for you for sticking up for your self and not letting anyone come over, you never know you may not even be around! Enjoy your food and time with your sister, I wish mine lived closer.

i don't blame you one bit for making your house off-limits. even when people say you don't have to do anthying, you end up having to entertain - cleaning, cooking, being polite, etc.

love the name thing! Biggrin
