Hi Mama, looking forward to following your story! Happy last month of pregnancy:)
Welcome to your lodge!
Yay, thanks ladies! This board was a huge source of support during my last pregnancy, I've really been looking forward to having a lodge again. I'll try post an intro (reintro?!) over the weekend. Tomorrow is my last day of work then my maternity leave starts so I'll have a little more free time... until this baby arrives anyway!
Had my 36 week appointment today, first home visit. The rest are home visits from now on which is very convenient seeing as it's winter and freezing out. Did the GBS swab, hopefully that comes back negative. Baby's heartbeat was 149bpm. Blood pressure was 100/70. Confirmed my plans to have a second waterbirth and where the pool is going. Midwife had a few concerns as I've been having ongoing headaches and contractions, but the contractions have been going on since 18 weeks and I'll tell you all about that later on!
This is baby #2. Our first was a big surprise because I thought I was barren. When I was 17 I was told I'd probably never conceive without fertility assistance, and it took three years of unprotected sex (but not 'trying') to conceive my daughter. Because of that I completely believed I could not ever get pregnant, and despite being violently ill with morning sickness for weeks, I was still completely floored when I finally tested when I was about 11 weeks along. I have always had very irregular periods and gone months without, and the period before I conceived with Desana was one day of spotting. So that can make things confusing! Apart from the really bad morning sickness that pregnancy was very easy and completely uncomplicated. I went into labour at 39 weeks, 6 days when my water broke, and Desana was born 10 hours later at home, in the water as planned. Some of my first words after the delivery were 'that was easy', and it really wasn't that hard.
This time around the pregnancy was more planned in that we had been trying for a couple of months and actually conceived the month I decided to stop trying so hard and to focus on weightloss again. It was only my third cycle after getting my period back at 12 months PP. I knew I was pregnant very early on as I started bloating at about 7 days past ovulation, and started feeling sick around about the same time. I had started charting before I got my period back, and had been using ovulation tests and the works. I tested before the two week wait was up because I just knew, and it was a positive!
Unfortunately it's been a completely opposite pregnancy with a lot of stress and scares. I had spotting on and off up until about five months and kept going in for blood tests and ultrasounds to make sure I wasn't losing the baby. I started having contractions at 18 weeks and went on bedrest for a week. At my Doula's recommendation I went to see a chiropractor and found out my contractions were being caused by the way my pelvis and lower back were aligning. So I saw the chiropractor three times a week for months and months, and apart from the expense that was a life saver because I was able to stay at work and not go on disability. The morning sickness was just as bad this time around if not worse, it lasted past twenty weeks and I'm still sick a couple of times a week.
Because of all the scares I've had a really hard time bonding with the baby because early on I thought I was going to lose it. That and working fulltime, and already having an almost two year old (she's two tomorrow!), it's just harder.
Now I'm done with work and get to concentrate on enjoying time with my little girl before the baby is born, and trying to get focused on having the right frame of mind for the birth. Last time I predicted when I would go into labour, even had it down to the location (at a friends house for christmas dinner - I said my water would break and it did!) this time around I am not so sure. I would like to make it to new years at least, but we'll see. With this pregnancy anything is possible!
I've hired a doula this time around because I just felt like I could use a little more support. Last time I had some pretty bad back labour and I know my doula will have techniques to deal with that. I'm still seeing my chiropractor once a week, and she will do home visits during the labour and postpartum so that's another tool if I need one. I'm seeing the same midwife as last pregnancy and hope to have the same labour and delivery, though maybe a tiny bit shorter! We'll see.
My due date is anywhere between January 11th-13th. By my charting it's the 13th, but two of the early ultrasounds I had said Jan 11th, or 12th. My midwife is going by the 13th as that's the latest date and best in case I go past dates.
I guess the only thing I left out is how DH (Matt) and I met... we met online ten years ago, playing an online game. We were friends for a few years (though we both liked each other) then finally got 'together' when I was 18. He's Canadian and I'm Australian, but we got married in my hometown and now we live in his!
TFS your intro. Sorry that this pregancy has been more difficult than your first. I'm glad you found a solution to the frequent contractions you were having with chiropractic care. I hope the birth is just as easy this time as last time.
Fun story hun! I feel like I know you now:) It's always fun to imagaine how things will go on dday, but I found that I had less time to think about it with #2 and 3! I hope your delivery is smooth and uneventfull, it sounds like you've earned it! Have a good holiday week and kup on how your feeling.
I have contractions every day so I really don't know when this baby will come. If my water doesn't break this time I guess I will just at some point reach my limit to dealing with the contractions without needing support. It's a lot more clear cut when labour starts with water breaking!
I have my 37 week home visit this evening with a midwife I met a couple of times last pregnancy. I like her, she's definitely my chose of back-up midwife that I'll hopefully get.
GBS came back negative, yay! Baby's heartbeat was 140, about what it usually is. But the baby's back is against my left side right now so I need to spend some more time hanging out on my hands and knees to get the back facing outwards if possible. I'll be seeing my chiro tomorrow, I'm sure she'll just tell me to do that anyway.
Yay for a good visit! I find labor to be easier before my water breaks, so you may just get to experience that for a change:) I'm sure the chiro will help!
The nesting sure has kicked in to overdrive. I'm trying to get the house all tidy before the baby comes, but it feels like a never ending task. I just don't want it to distract me from resting or looking after the baby once it's here. Having a baby this time of year sure doesn't help, there's so much stuff coming into the house!
I'm very curious to meet this baby and discover if it's temperament is as mild on the outside as it is on the inside. This one barely moves compared to how much my daughter moved last pregnancy. Either that or I'm too distracted to notice.
I hear you on the baby this time of year! It is hard:) Your going to be VERY busy in a few years with all the Christmas and birthdays so close together!
Still just continuing to have contractions once in awhile. I'm drinking my raspberry leaf tea and nursing my toddler (I'm going to be tandem nursing soon!), so I'm sure both of those are hoping with the uterus toning. I've been thinking about getting my pool inflated though it's a pain to 'store' once it's up. I'm just a little anxious that I'll have a quick labour and things won't be ready when I need them. I can't even remember when I inflated the pool last time!
I bet it would great fun you and DD to play in when it's up early! If you feel like you need it up it's going to be worth it to walk around it for a few day:) I'm sure nurseing a toddler isn't going to hurt the contraction situation!
The pool is up! That was quite a work out. I'm glad it's done though, I hate to think of one of my support people being busy doing that while I'm in labour. Now I just have to keep the cat from using it as a scratching pole. My little girl LOVES the pool, she was climbing all over it as I got it inflated, then she threw her bath toys in and had some fun in there for awhile (without water). It's just a bit too tall for her to easily climb in and out of, so she's asking for 'help!' pretty often.
The baby's movement has been really zilch today, but I've been having lots of movement over the last half an hour since I drank a sugary drink. I have my 38 week home appointment in about half an hour, so will see what the midwife says then. My Mum tells me that decreased movement is a sign of impending labour! I wish!
We had to take Desana to the doctors this afternoon because she has a nasty cough. He said she has a mild ear infection and gave us a prescription that we can fill later on if she ends up with a fever or the cough gets worse.
Midwife is sending me in to the hospital for an NST because of the decreased movement. Just a precaution, but as a homebirther this freaks me right out!
I'm sure everything is fine but it's better to be safe than sorry! Keep us updated!
Hope the NST went well!
NST was fine. The baby didn't move at all for the first half, then they gave me some juice and got me on my side and there was lots of movement. It was an experience.
I'm glad to hear the NST went okay.
Glad babe looked good, I hope it's a sign of labor for you!!
Glad the NST went well. I guess baby really is mild mannered! Can't wait to hear how things go and see pics when your LO makes her arrival!
I caught my daughter's cold so am feeling pretty miserable, but I feel worse for her since she's two and can't have cough drops or anything. She's in a great mood this morning though so hopefully she's feeling a bit better.
My midwife dropped off the birth supplies yesterday. I have been thinking I need to get out baby's first outfit, hat and diaper and some towels as well. I don't know how people pack for the hospital!
We have a busy day planned and new years plans but I am thinking about canceling since our friends have a 5 month old and I don't want to get her sick.
Hopefully you (and your DD) feel better soon, I know it can make sleeping even more uncomfortable.
Sorry to hear you're sick. Hope you feel better soon.
Hope you and DD are feeling better soon!
I'm still sick and feeling pretty wiped but my daughter seems to be doing better. I think I probably have strep throat as it's incredibly painful to swallow. I wish it would go away! It's 4:20am and I'm up with insomnia, I dreamt that my water broke and I couldn't find the phone numbers for my doula and midwife. They're written on my calendar though, so no worries there. In five hours I have my 39 week appointment, home visit with both my midwife and doula. I don't expect anything too eventful, I'm not going to be checked and the baby still hasn't dropped.
On the one hand I'm fine with waiting to get over this illness before having the baby, but on the other, it's very difficult to keep waiting.
I'm very late in welcoming you to your lodge! Nice to read your intro. Hope your appointment today goes well, and that all in your household start feeling better!
I hope your home visit goes well and that your feeling better soon. Sick and prego is not a good combo!! Let us know how everything goes.
My midwife didn't make my 39 week appointment today as she had a birth, but I got to hang out with and talk to my doula for a few hours which was really nice. I expect my midwife will call tomorrow to reschedule, so we'll see. I'm really exhausted, really need to get more sleep and get over this cold, but I don't know if it will happen! Between the heartburn, sore throat and bladder, sleep is hard to come by.
Glad you had a nice talk with your doula. I hope you get some rest so you can get rid of this cold!
Turns out I won't be having a 39 week appointment! My midwife is out of the office until Monday and I think a couple of the other midwifes are also sick, so they're short staffed. The only time they could see me was if I came in for a noon appointment on Friday, with the midwife I'm least comfortable with. I don't drive and my husband can't leave work so that's out. My next appointment is next Tuesday when I'm 40 weeks... hopefully I won't make it until then.
I saw my chiropractor today and she said the baby has dropped down lower than last week, so that's some progress. I've been having contractions on and off all day which still isn't that unusual for me, but it definitely feels like things are progressing. Realistically I'm getting closer to giving birth, no one is pregnant forever!
Here's a weird question... has anyone else ever experienced just general kind of pain/pressure in the genital area when being heavily pregnant? It's not the stabbing to the cervix kind of pain, more external.
I ended up getting in for an appointment today with one of the back-up midwifes. She said the baby is engaged, she could barely feel the head from the outside. I declined an internal and membrane sweep. Contractions are ongoing and seem to be picking up, but still not active. I'm feeling encouraged by the baby dropping though. My daughter was born within a day or two of that happening last time.
I'm glad you got in to see one of the MWs and everything looks good. Yay for dropping! It sounds like it won't be long now!
Is the discomfort you're descirbing focused in the center of your pubic bone? Like it's trying to come apart? Because I have that, and I've heard of other ladies on preg.org saying they have it, too.
The pain is more flesh pain than in my bones, but pretty much everything hurts at this point!
I'm still pregnant. I've been having some fairly intense contractions, but still nothing that is lasting long enough for me to call my midwife. It could really mean anything. I'm not going to start thinking this means I'll have a very short labour, because I still want to be in the right frame of mind to deal with something longer.
Today I should be having another home visit but I didn't get a confirmation phone call yesterday, so I'm not sure if my midwife will be here. I'm debating getting checked, also debating the stretch and sweep. I'm leaning towards getting checked even though I know the cervix can change so quickly, and if nothing is going on I'm going to be deeply confused. I think I'll save the stretch and sweep until 41 weeks, if I go that far.
I'm still fairly sick with this cold, and DH has a work event tomorrow night, so it'd be nice to hold off for that. Either way... baby can come when ready I guess. I can't believe it hasn't happened already!
Didn't end up getting checked today, but if I'm still pregnant in a couple of days I might try the stretch and sweep. I'm only measuring 36 1/2 weeks now (38 weeks last week), so baby must be super low. My doula gave me a lovely foot massage with acupressure, but the baby is still not coming out. Tomorrow I have my regular chiro appointment. I'm looking forward to it, my back pain has increased this week for sure. I spent a couple of hours walking around at the mall. Still feeling a lot of general discomfort but no labour.
I feel like a baby mom not checking in on my ladies I'm sorry your in so much pain and I really hope baby is on the way very very soon. (((HUGS)))
I'm well and truly overdue now, I am pretty sure it's because I've been so sick and baby is holding off for me to get better. I think I might be feeling slightly better today, but it's too early to tell. Yesterday was rough! We'll see. I do have the midwifes offer to do a stretch and sweep whenever I'm ready, but I'm still not ready. I'll go in for an ultrasound on the 20th if the baby hasn't come by then.
Sorry you're still feeling sick and your baby hasn't decided to come yet!
I've had a rough couple of days but am doing a lot better.... still pregnant! I had a stretch and sweep on Monday, saw my Doula yesterday and had a good cry, worked through a lot of issues, started losing my plug last night and all of today. I had a fetal assessment this morning since I'm 41 weeks today by my later date. Baby is doing absolutely fine, actually measuring on the small side (38 weeks), though I'm 100% sure of my dates because I was charting. I've just known all along that this baby is small. With my daughter my water broke and I went into labour within 24 hours of losing my plug, but I'm not sure if that will happen this time. My Doula helped me get into a better place where I'm not feeling as bad being pregnant or as anxious about it, so we'll keep waiting I guess. I have another fetal assessment scheduled for Monday if the baby hasn't come by then. My babysitter for Desana is going away on vacation again tomorrow and is gone until Feb, so it looks like she'll be at the birth. Other time crunch is my doula is actually going on vacation on the 27th, which is just one week away. Yikes! I figure if the baby hasn't come by Monday I'll ask to meet her back-up so I can try establish a relationship with another doula. But fingers crossed the baby will come before then.
ETA: Forgot to add that my blood pressure was borderline on Monday, but I had just received some bad news from family and was feeling really stressed by being overdue... so hoping it was just a one off. I see my midwife again tomorrow and will get the test results back from the liver blood test.
Hope things keep progressing for you! Good news about the babe being healthy.
My water broke!
Oh wow! ELVs, Amy!
Birth was good. 10 hours from when my water broke, exactly the same as with my first... 6 hours active labour. We had the pool ready but I felt too warm to use it, then baby arrived very suddenly with only one push! That's a major major summary but I haven't written up anything yet. I had a heavy bleed a few hours after the birth and had to get an IV with pitocin for about an hour... incredibly painful but avoided transfer to hospital. I'm doing fine now, just a lot more physically sore than I was last time. Oh, and the baby is a girl, thankfully! Our ultrasound said 80% sure but I was little bit worried. She was only 7lbs despite being 8 days overdue, but had super long fingernails. We've called her Freya Lily. I had my placenta encapsulated and asked to keep a few pieces for consuming in shakes. Should pick that up tomorrow. I was going to do it myself but decided I wasn't up for it.
Congratulations & WTTW Freya!
I'm looking forward to reading the whole story!
Congrats! Can't wait to hear your story!
Congratulations, Amy, and WTTW baby Freya! Sorry to hear you had to have the pitocin IV for your bleeding, but I'm glad you didn't have to transfer.
How are you Mama? Hope all is well!
