Thanks girls!! Smile I'm not exactly sure how this works, but I'm excited about it so if I leave anything out of my intro or you want to know anything specific, just ask!! Smile

My journey to becoming pregnant and having a baby began several years ago before I was even ready for children! I am married to a WONDERFUL man, Matt. We got married in July '05 after dating for a few years and our wedding night was our first night together.

Six months into our marriage, January 4, 2006, Matt went to the doctor with a very bad cough, which we thought was walking pneumonia. He had been coughing off and on since Thanksgiving and I finally was able to convince him to go see a doctor!! (men!!) Anyway, the doctor took an xray thinking it was pneumonia also and didn't like the way it looked so he sent Matt to the hospital for a CT scan. I was working late that night and since we only had one car, I had to wait until Matt got done at the hospital to come pick me up from work. I remember it so clearly, that it is scary!! Matt walked into my work around 7pm and I turned to him (thinking it was pneumonia) and said, "so, are you dying?" He just stared at me and said, "well, yeah, I have a tumor." I kept waiting for him to say, "just kidding!! ha ha ha!!" (because we joke around a lot together) but he just kept staring at me. If finally hit me that he was serious!!!!!!

So, after several weeks of biopsies and tests and the doctors saying that they couldn't determine what type of cancer it was and that Matt should get his affairs in order, we were both a big mess. We are very faithful to God and I knew that God had a plan. We prayed and prayed and prayed. That Wednesday evening, our entire church got into small groups during our midweek service to pray about several situations and one of the situations was Matt's health. The very next morning, our doctor called us telling us that the local hospital had messed up the biopsy results and after they had sent the backup biopsy to Emory University, it came back right away as Lymphoma! (which is very common and has a high cure-rate). They wanted to start chemo treatment right away and told us that the type of chemo that they were going to use has a high incidence of infertility, we would most likely never have children naturally, and that we needed to look into saving sperm......well, after looking into it, we knew we couldn't afford the thousands of dollars in costs to do that. I told Matt that if we never would be able to have children of our own but he was still here on this earth, that is all that mattered and to go ahead and start treatment. To put treatment off until we could afford to save sperm might have endangered his life. I think that was by far, the hardest decision I have ever made but I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!

So, fast forward through almost a year of chemo and radiation treatments and Matt was declared officially in remission in October '06!! In December '06 we had stopped using any type of birth control since we figured that the chances of us getting pregnant were small and we didn't want to miss an opportunity. In July '07, I was ready to seriously try to conceive. Matt had agreed (rather reluctantly) and we tried for a month. When it didn't happen, I think it freaked Matt out at the possibility that he was infertile and he told me that he wanted to wait another year before we really started trying and going to see doctors and all of that. I (reluctantly Lol agreed and we decided to wait until July '08 to try and get pregnant.

Well, God had other plans!! In December, my period didn't come and I am always exactly 30 days! We had been using condoms as birth control and because we had both been sick that month, we only had sex twice and I thought that it was not around the time that I ovulated!! I took several tests and still did not believe the results!! I am just amazed that we are having a baby! It is truly a miracle that I am carrying this child and that we are able to have a child of our own! I feel so blessed.

We do plan to have a natural birth and we are following the "Birthing in Awareness" approach. I am very excited, nervous, anxious, etc about what labor and delivery are going to be like. But I know that if God allowed me to get through cancer with my husband and so many other situations previously, that he can get me through a natural birth!

So, that is my story up to this point!!

I had a little scare on Sunday night and went to L&D to get checked out....the baby was fine and my cervix was nice and closed. At my appointment this past Tuesday, I was 50% effaced and dilated to 1 cm. It was nice to have a little bit of progress in two days and I'm hoping that I will have had more progress by my next appointment, which is next Tuesday.

Oh! We are having a girl- Ariel Elizabeth and I am due on 8/28/08. I have a baby blog that I keep (mostly for long distance family and friends). It is in my signature and you are welcome to visit it and see details about the pregancy thus far, the nursery, all of those details!! Smile I'm very excited about being able to share all of this with you (even though I don't post here very often) and I hope you enjoy my journey!! Smile

Good intro Biggrin

I'm not familiar with Birthing in Awareness (but I goggled it!) did you take a class on it? Are you having a doula?

We wanted to take the class but we don't have any money (literally) and couldn't afford the classes. We have the book that they read in the class though, and we've been going through it as if we were in the class. A few of my good friends have all used this method so I am fortunate enough that if I have any major questions, I can ask them but the book is pretty straightforward.

My sister-in-law is my doula!! (which is great b/c we can't afford to pay anyone!!! but I am going to get her a manicure and pedicure gift certificate as a thank you!!) Smile

Thank ladies!

So, I already feel like I've learned a lot from you just by reading some of the other posts and birth lodges!! For example, I never knew that you could decline the internal exams at your doctor's office. I know that you could request the exams to be limited at the hospital, but I had always thought the exams at the doctor's office were necessary.....that it was important for the doctor to know how much progress you made!! I am planning on talking to my doctor at my next appointment about not doing any more exams until I'm 40 weeks- at that point, I will allow it but if they aren't necessary, I don't want to expose my baby to unnecessary infection!! (although, I do like knowing how far along I am......it's like several of you have said- it doesn't really give any indication about when I will go into labor!) My doctor has been very supportive of my desires and wishes up to this point. He has even given me some pointers on pain coping techniques that he has seen work for women who have had a natural birth. So, I'm hoping that he will be okay with this!!

On a different note, I've been working on several pain coping techniques and am trying to build an arsenal of things that might be helpful. My doula told me that she found during delivery that some of the things she practiced and assumed would help, didn't help at all and a few of the techniques that she didn't practice very much ended up being lifesavers for her!!! So, I'd be interested in knowing anything that you BTDT moms have found to be helpful during labor!! Smile

I've never used any particular technique, like hypnobirthing, but I become more and more internally focused as labor progresses and just listen to my body as far as breathing and positioning.

Hi Sharon, how are you feeling today?

With the birth of my DS, I had expected massage and counter pressure on my back to help relieve some of the pain of back labour, but it really was not affective. What did help more than I expected it to was a hot shower. So I agree with your doula, it's good to have a whole arsenol of ideas, and be flexible and open to trying different techniques or different positions when the time comes.

Hi Sharon!

Just saying hello. I "know" you from the Sept '08 boards but I just lurk here... while I try to make my decisions about childbirth. I am leaning towards natural but hate to say I am going to do something and then chicken out. Smile

I had read the story about you and DH awhile ago on the Sept '08 board but so good to read it again... what an amazing story and what a blessing your daughter is!!!

I realized that I haven't posted anything in a few days or so. My LO is still cooking!! I had my latest appointment this past Tuesday and since I was in such a funk (long story- some of you from the Sept board probably get it), I didn't even remember to ask my doctor to not do any more cervical checks and I was kind of in a trance and trucked through the appointment without thinking about it!! So, I had the cervical check afterall. If I can get out of this mood I'm in and remember next week (shouldn't be a problem- I just had pregnancy brain), I'll talk to him about it at my next appointment.

But my GBS test was negative....weight was good...BP, HB, all of that.

My doctor is such a goofball.....he was in an extrememly good mood and walks into the room with this silly smile on his face and says, "so, it looks like you are expecting." I said, "I sure hope so, otherwise, I have quite a growth on my stomach." His reponse, "So, do you know what to expect when you are expecting?" (as he laughs to himself at what a marvelous comedian he is!)

Anyway, I've started with EPO and RRL tea. I'm hoping that the EPO will help my cervix to make some progress. As we get closer to the due date, I'll add to these induction techniques with sex, walking, and possibly nipple stimulation. My biggest fear is that I'm going to go a good two weeks past my due date and have to be induced which I DO NOT want. But given my family history, it is a good chance. My mom was 3 weeks late with my brother (she begged her doctor to give her another week) and he ended up starting to peel and the situation was deteriorating and they had to induce for his health. With me and my sister, they went ahead and induced at 2 weeks late because they weren't taking any chances. I'm hoping that somehow, maybe these techniques will just help the situation so that even if I AM late, it won't be more than a week late and it will happen naturally!!

I sure hope it all helps, my second baby was 7 days late which makes me think my first would have been really late had a not been induced. I have to say that I wouldn't let induction happen EVER again unless there was a medical emergancy. If you can make it happen it's much easier to go into labor on your bodies time. Wishing you all the best, I hope your out of your funk soon.

sorry I haven't posted anything!! It has been a crazy few weeks!! I'll have to try to catch up with what has been happening but in the meantime, I've been having contractions all night. Yahoo

it is frustrating though, because they don't seem to be increasing in intensity or frequency......but we will see. I know that this phase of labor can last a long time. I just haven't been able to sleep at all.

12:34 contractions started
12:45
12:56
1:05
1:23
1:30
1:34
1:41
1:47
1:55
2:25
2:32
2:39
2:43
2:50
2:58
3:02
3:07
3:15
3:22
3:31
3:36
3:55
4:03
4:08
4:14
4:19
4:28
4:32

what do y'all think? do they seem to be getting closer together at all? some of them are 4 mins apart and some are like 20........

Also, quick question- when they are consistently less than 5 mins apart, should I still call my doctor even if they aren't that intense? They hurt momentarily, but it is really nothing......which makes me frustrated and wonder if it is false labor........

Sorry, don't know if it's the real thing or not...all I know is I had 8 hours of consistant contractions that never increased in pain level and then eventually died out.
I'm guessing pre-labor? drink a glass of water, can you sleep through them? If not it doesn't hurt to call... I never do because I don't want to make the trip and be sent home or make the trip and they keep me there when they really shouldn't have :).
I HTH...sorry I'm not a better resource at 4am in the morning!

Ohhh, I am really excited for you!! The timings of your contractions sound exactly like how my BH's get as I am getting closer and closer to the big day. I did actually go in with my last baby to be checked when I had a few hours like you described above, but nothing was happening. I hope that isn't the case for you. It looks like the last 7 times you mention, from 3.55 to 4.32 are more like what you want to see. How long are they lasting?

A good way to tell if they are real or not, have a warm bath! It always stopped mine, lol!

Sending lots of labour vibes from across the pond!

Ooohhh looking good! I know that I had a very long early labor with DD, and I had contraction simular to what your showing all day. While I wouldn't say they hurt I would say they became more intense as they went on. I know that I only had to stop and breath through what were real contractions, bh didn't make me need to stop and breath. HTH and keep us posted!
