Here is my intro:

I'm Helen (27, 28 on the 21st) and I'm married to Rudolph (32). We met online in July '02 in a msn chatroom. We started talking just about every night and even called each other on occasion. We were just friends, until in October '02, Rudi decided to drive 500 miles to my home town to have a holiday. I was meant to be his tour guide of the town, but we ended up becoming more than friends Wink

We started doing the long distance thing, but after 4 months we decided that it wasn't working, and that one of us would move. Since he owned his own store (selling DJ equipment) and I worked in an industry where I could find work anywhere, we decided it should be me that moves. So in May '03 I packed up all my worldly possessions into my crappy old car, and drove 500 miles to start my new life. It was the best thing I ever did!

On February 29th 2004, sick of waiting for Rudi to pop the question (we'd been talking about it for a good 6 months beforehand), I came home from work and got down on one knee and proposed to him. Ok, it wasn't that romantic. I got home at about 11:30pm (I worked 4pm-11pm shifts) and tried to work up the courage to ask him. Finally he asked what I wanted for dinner and I blurted out “YOU!”. He looked at me puzzled and then I got down on bended knee, told him that he made my life complete and asked if he'd marry me. He left me hanging for a good 10 minutes, but finally said that ofcourse he'd marry me.

We got married on October 30th 2004, in a lovely civil ceremony in one of our local parks (I promise I'll find some photos and put them in here soon).
In November I needed to have my implanon implant (birth control implant) removed and replaced, so it started our discussions on TTC. We decided that we were happy to have a bub at any stage, so off birth control I went.

It took 6 months to conceive Astrid. I had a completely uneventful pregnancy, and had a relatively easy birth. Labor lasted 12 hours, 30 minutes pushing, and out popped my 9lb9oz baby girl. I was in hospital, and even though I had decided to try for a natural birth, I ended up having gas (nitros oxide) and pethadine (demerol). I felt totally out of control just before the pushing stage, so I decided that with my next birth I wouldn't have anything.

3 months after Astrid's birth we decided to TTC again, thinking in part, that it would take atleast another 6 months for it to happen. Nope. First try. Again an uneventful pregnancy and easy birth. Water broke 5pm 22nd of April, went to bed, woken at 2am by contractions, woke Rudi at 3am, got to the hospital at 3:45am, Bea, all 10lb10oz of her, was born at 6:10am, after only 6 minutes of pushing. Once again I had wanted to have a natural birth, but being in the hospital, I caved when the nurse asked if I wanted gas and pethadine. This time though, the pethadine was administered just 30 minutes before Bea was born, so she was really groggy for the rest of the day.

I felt like a total failure. I had planned, and researched and done everything I could think of to have a natural birth, but I caved under pressure.

It took me awhile, but I finally figured out what the problem I had was. I felt compelled to conform in the hospital. I didn't want to make the nurses job harder, and I didn't want to be seen as the bad patient. I felt like I couldn't vocalise, I couldn't move around, I couldn't do any of the relaxation techniques I had learnt, because I didn't want to upset the apple cart. This is where I started to think about birthing outside of the hospital environment, and in my own comfortable space.

I started looking into homebirth about this time last year. I read lots of stuff about it, found out as much information about how it happens in Australia as I could, and started on my campaign to convince Rudi that it was a good idea. I also stumbled across a few websites about unassisted birth and became intrigued. But I thought that Rudi would flip at the idea of an unassisted birth, so started my homebirth campaign. Not surprisingly, he was not all too keen on the idea, not only because of the price factor (it costs about $5000 here in Aus, unless you are lucky enough to live in one of the only 2 states that have public funded homebirth programs) but he didn't like the idea of a technical stranger being in our home for such an intimate thing. I jokingly mentioned freebirth to him, and to my surprise, he became quite excited in the idea. So before we even concieved this baby, we had decided that unassisted birth was how this little one would be brought into the world. Just mum, dad and her 2 sisters to welcome her.

So January rolled around this year, and I was meant to go back to the doctor to get another script for the mini pill, but Rudi and I agreed to start TTC again. I took my last pill on January 20th, and on February 11th, I got my BFP. Talk about fertile.

So that pretty much brings us to now. I have been seeing my GP regularly, been having all the tests and ultrasounds (20 week one said this is another girl), because we see that as our way to make sure that there should be no undue complications with our freebirth.

I'm going to go to bed now (since it's 10pm and I've been up since 6am) so I'll put my current feelings in a post tomorrow.

If you managed to read through all that, you deserve a medal Blum 3

We've both done a fair bit of research on everything that can happen. There are some really great Australian websites/forums on the matter, which made it so much easier to get the information that we needed. Also for some of the more practical things (like how to actually deliver a baby, etc) my MIL is a trained midwife (she works in aged care now) so we have every textbook that she had on midwifery. It's actually funny to read them though, because they were written in the 60's and 70's and have so much stuff in them that isn't done any more (ie. enemas, shaving, stirups, etc).

My first was 40+4, and my second was 41+4, so I'm not expecting this one to come early. Also, I was kinda charting (only just started) when I fell pregnant, and there was really only one day that the baby could have been conceived, and by that calculation my EDD isn't until the 29th.

I haven't actually told my GP, but I think she has her suspicions. She has asked me if I am booked into any hospital, and I have told her that I haven't, and she has pressed me to book in. And I've actually been more interested in my health this time, asking her questions about every little thing rather than just going with the flow like I did with the other 2. I'm actually too nervous to come straight out and tell her that we're having a freebirth, even though I'm sure that she'd be 100% supportive. I guess that there is that slight possibility that she won't be, and then it'll make my visits hard to put up with.

Welcome to your lodge! I cant wait to hear about your freebirth! We had plans to UC too, untill we found a HB midwife. But if this one goes well, in the future we will probably UC. We learned SO much from the purebirth Australia site!

I hope it goes well and I can't wait to hear about it!

Well today is my EDD according to the doctors and as I totally expected. nothing is happening, other than lots of phone calls from well meaning friends and relatives asking if the bub is here ( I will never again tell anyone the EDD if I have another bub. It'll be a due around this month will be my answer).

I had a fairly hectic weekend. On Friday, DH took the day off work to look after the girls, so that I could go a parenting expo that is held in the city every year. I have been every year since I fell pregnant with Astrid and I really didn't want to miss out this year. I got a whole bunch of samples of stuff like creams and such for bub, nappy wipes, breast pads, creams and stuff for me. I also renewed my subscriptions to 2 parenting magazines that I get, and got 2 big bags of goodies, and a pretty cool lemaze toy that will arrive with the next magazine I get. I also bought a gorgeous dress, marked down from $109 to $40. It has flip down bits for breastfeeding, and since it is summer here soon, I couldn't go past it. I actually wore it on Saturday and it fits so well, even being pregnant I got it in brown.
On Saturday, we went to the local craft markets and walked around heaps. Unfortunately there was nothing interesting that I found, but the walking was lovely, as was the atmosphere. We also decided that we need to try and get the house in order, cause we are intending on putting it on the market shortly, so I spent heaps of time trying to get it cleaned up.
Sunday, was again spend trying to get the house orderly, so by last night I was pretty exhausted.

I have just about everything prepared for the bub's arrival, but I have been putting some things off, like getting the clothes out and ready, getting the cloth nappies ready and even putting the port-a-cot (pack and play for all the US ladies playing along) up. I think this is mostly because I feel like I have plenty of time to get it done before the bub arrives. It also stops me just sitting around (not that I ever get to just sit around with 2 toddlers Blum 3 ) thinking that the baby should be here already. One of my friends' sister was due next week, but my friend informed me last week that the bub arrived on the 8th. Thank god I have been prepared this whole time to wait, cause otherwise it would have been an absolute punch in the guts to hear this news.
There's not much news on my health front. BP is fine according to my GP (although it is higher than I would like, but since I've had 2 toddlers driving me crazy, while waiting for upto 45 mins for my appointments each time, it's kind of understandable), no oedema, the varicose vein I had on my nether regions has disappeared, but has been replaced by a hemorrhoid the size of a small city. Oh the joys of pregnancy Blum 3 (but I wouldn't have it any other way).
Emotionally I am just about ready for this baby. I still have "oh Sh*t" moments, where I realise that I'm soon going to have a brand new helpless baby to care for, along with my 2 boisterous girls, but they are getting further apart as I relax about it. I've read a few 'bad' birth experiences in the last few weeks, that seem to weaken my resolve for a freebirth, but then I hear about an awesome experience and know that it was just nerves that got the better of me, and I am more resolved to freebirth than I was before.
Gee this is getting long. I might end it there for the time being.

I'm glad you prepared mentally for going late. When people ask me when I'm due I tell them the doctors say I'm due April 28th, but since I know when I conceived I'm not really due until the beginning of May. Hopefully I won't get any of the well meaning phone calls.

Happy due date!! I got the phone calls during my last 2 pregnancies, not quite so much this time, maybe every other day. Perhaps it's because I am planning a homebirth this time they are not worried that I will have the baby and not tell them?! I am glad you are prepared. Now...hurry up baby!

Happy day after your EDD, I hope you have a good week and that people don't bug you too much. A rlf of mine is due tomorrow and I REALLY want to call her, but I'm trying to hold back I'm sure she's been on the phone all week:) You'll do great with the 3 girls, though I know what your feeling even though mine are over 2 years apart it's still a little hard to imagaine how your going to be able to add anything else to the crazy life your running now!

To let you all know that our family welcomed Miss Kaylin into it at 12:30pm today (Thursday).
She was freebirthed in our lounge room, 10 minutes after Rudi arrived home from work, so it was a close call.
She weighed 4.6kg (around 10lb2oz), measured 52 cms long (about 20.5 inches) and was born in the caul (born in her amniotic sac).
She is a perfect little princess.
I'll put up pics and a birth story sometime in the next week.

My last baby was 10lbs 2oz too and almost born in the caul - it's so magical isn't it?!

I can't wait to read your birth story and see some pics and I hope you and your family are enjoying your newest little Princess!

Love,

Sarah-Jean
