My name is MAGALI I was born (1969) and raised in France and lived there until 1993.

I have a bachelor degree in Tourism…. I wanted to be a vet but vet school is very hard in France...

But I one day saw a husky in a dog magazine and since I loved dogs and winter DOG MUSHING started to hunt me…

I met DH at a Mushing meeting… he was already “famous” in our sport going to Alaska racing the Iditarod etc… he was married then and I had a long time boyfriend then…
Few years later DH was divorcing and I had separated from my ex… then things happened…

DH was a doctor in France (ER and sport medicine) but he loved dogs more than people… so we both gave up all we had and moved here for OUR AMERICAN DREAM!!!

We moved permanently in 1993 to the Fairbanks area, got our green card and became US Citizen in 2002!!!! AND WE ARE PROUD AMERICANS!!!!

We bought a piece of land south of Fairbanks with a small cabin and build the remaining ourselves year by year when the funds were available… We can both do carpeting/framing, plumbing and electricity and we are proud of our house we build together from our own hands!!! the only help we got is for laying the carpet ! we the job done right and also for the texture on the ceiling paint!!!! All the rest we did ourselves!

We both run dog competitively we raced many races all over US, Canada, Russia, France, Germany…. We are both very competitive and very dedicated to our dogs and proud of our kennels and the work we get from our dogs…. Our kennel has about 80/90 dogs year long…

I also own a wonderful Miniature poodle named KEOPS he is now 3 yrs old and I also have a very old border collie named CARLIT she is 16 now and a very fat cat named MAO who is 5…. Those 3 live in the house 24/7.

Until about 5 years ago I didn’t had in mind a kid… My dogs and our way of life took all my time, mind , energy and $$$... I mention "baby" to DH back then he said he wasn't interested..... Sad

Then something almost happened 4 years ago… DH almost had an affair with a girl working in the kennel for us… lucky me I figured out what was going on and after some very very down time took my courage and went and talked to the girl and then confronted DH…. (don’t need to go in more details)
No need to say we went through some very rough time! I never been that low I think….
But I decided to try to make it work… I never mentioned the word “baby” to him anymore since I knew he didn’t want one (I asked before the whole story)….

Things got better between us… I took one day at a time… To be honest I can’t said I was not “nervous” when he goes to work for 4 months at times in summer but I told him you even look “I am gone and you loose ½ of everything”…..

At the same time that my life wasn’t too funny… a good friend of mine ask me if I could help with some translation (French to English) I said yes…. My friend couldn’t have baby and she wanted to adopt one… they found a mother who “selected them” (Open adoption) but she only spoke French so I help and ended up been very close to both parts…. The mom came to AK to give birth and I was in the delivery room with her…. Some of the nurse were not nice to her since they new it was an adoption the doctor on call was my OB/GYN now… He was so so nice and gentle with her supporting her without judgment!!! This is why I choose him for my own pregnancy…. Any how the baby is now 4yrs old and the happiest girl on earth and spoiled of course….. Been there at the birth even so it was not a natural one … the mom didn’t want a natural one she was giving away that baby ad refuse to FEEL it… I can understand why… It was the most amazing moment in my life…. Lot of emotions I can’t even write them…

Life went on at our place… both working on our relationship … making the best of it….

Couple years ago after the racing season was over (ends usually in April) DH asked me if I wanted to try to have a baby! I told him “if this is a joke this is not funny” He knew I wanted one and I knew he didn’t want one and I just never asked again and try to put it in the back of my head.. but each time my friend would announce they were PG I would cry so hard…..

Anyhow… after almost 2 yrs of trying HERE WE ARE!!! But it took time…

We (mostly me) decided to get pregnant on our own no MEDICAL help!! I figure if nature don’t think I deserve a baby she knows better…. Anyhow… I took daily Folic Acid…We tried and tried… last year I started to get those Ovulation test thing…. DTD when they told us but didn’t help…. And every month I would cry… My best friend mentions IVF and I told her no… “Nature knows better”….. Dec 07 I was flying out to Montana to met DH and stay down there and race our dogs in MT and WY… I basically GAVE up stopped the Folic acid and stop writing down DTD date… We came back to AK mid February and I had my period right after we got back (Feb 13th) … we went to Anchorage for a dog race DH was racing and few days after this DH was flying to Sweden to speak in a Dog Mushing seminar over there… Since I gave up writing down the DTD dates… all I know is baby was conceive before March 1st…

I never got in my head I could get PG… so life went on and I raced end fo March last year we did some camping trip with our dogs in beautiful AK wilderness and I had to pee a lot… but I always pee a lot…. Then visiting some friend in the Bush (off road system) I couldn’t sleep due to the bathroom trip (outside) every 5mn… I started to try to remember when I had my periods last time… couldn’t remember….. got back home looked at the calendar and DIDN’T EVEN DARE TO EVEN THINK ABOUT IT….. LONG TIME AGO IT WAS….

March 30th = I was working for the Lodge next door (my best friend) driving Japanese tourists to the Airport and back and I got a Pregnancy test and it is INSIDE FRED MEYER (grocery store) that I got the surprise !!!
I FREAKED OUT :: happy, scared, worried, not trusting the test !!!! I bought couple more test and brought them back home…. DIDN’T SAY A WORD TO DH !!

Did one more test the Monday…. Still positive… I WAS NOT ALLUCINATING ANYMORE….

Then on April 1st I took the test AGAIN… got positive and called DH to go check something out… and I gave him the test and said “I don’t think it is an April’s fool joke” he kissed me and hugged me and said “Are you happy” !!!! I cried and said “Yes…. And you ?” he answered “more than you can even think”…..

So far all is been good with the pregnancy!!! I was really worried the first 3 months knowing anything can happen…. Then we decided for an Amnio for Down syndrome risk (I am 39 now and DH 52) so…. The test wasn’t bad at all but the 2 weeks wait was so so long… then the phone call came that the baby was NORMAL!!!! I was so so relieved….
Now I am getting big and less comfortable in my own body but I love been pregnant and love feeling my baby inside moving…

We decided to not know the gender we figured it is the last big surprise on earth!!!
I am of course going to breastfeed the baby (even so my boobs never got big)….

After doing some research I decided to go for Cloth Diapers and got my “starting” stack ready!!
Since the beginning I know I don’t want an Epi… and after more reading realized the birth I want is called NATURAL CHILD BIRTH….
I figure we are mammals so it is natural to do it without drugs (of course I am open to emergency for the baby …). My hospital just got a laboring tub and hopefully they said it will be operational in 3 weeks!!!! I plan of course of using it once at the hospital…

If I would had been younger I would have wanted a water birth but here in our small city only the Birth Center does it and I want to deliver at the hospital (just in case) and I have a very nice OB/GYN doctor and I get along very well with him.

I just hired a DOULA (DH of course met her and likes her too) and I figured now I am ready to try to have the birth “of my dreams” if I can say it like this…. But I know things can happen…. But I have hope and faith in my body!!!!
When I talked to my doctor about NCB he told me since I am already pretty tough to pain (frozen finger, several major surgery on my knee …) I should be fine… “Like he said you can hunt and carry your own caribou in the snow and cut woods with a chainsaw for a whole week and not complaining about back/arms pain because there is no point complaining since the job has to be done… I figured you are going to show up at 9cm and telling me “I just had few contractions”…. That made me laughs! I told me I may be a chicken and cry for an EPI after 4cm!!! he laugh and said “we will see”….

PS: I talked recently to one of my friends (she was our neighbor before and run dogs competitively too) who has 2 kids and she is a NCB advocate and she told me at the first baby (total labor 5hr with very very strong contractions) she did got an Epidural and she was SO SO MAD AFTER HERSELF not been able to handle the pain, "been a chicken” etc… (she was like me a dog musher and living in remote place) she told me if it ever come to it and you decide to ask for it she said DO NOT FEEL BAD ABOUT YOURSELF… her second baby was a total of 1hr labor and she was born naturally….

SO LIKE I SAID I GO IN THERE WITH AN IDEA THAT I CAN DO IT AND HOPE I WILL…..

SORRY IT WAS SO LONG !!!!!!

Welcome to your lodge! I was born and raised in the Mat-Su Valley:) I love it here and I can't believe you dog mush, I'm such a huge fan of extended time spent in the blowing cold. Your baby is going to be so adventurous! I can't wait to hear your whole story, it's fun to follow lodges that take place somewhere I'm familiar with. I have family in Fairbanks so I've been there many times. Wishing you all the best with your little miracle. Do you and or DH mush the Iditarod?

DH raced the Iditarod 8 times.... but now it is over we are getting "old" for this... and it is very expensive as you probably know....

we raced a lot smaller races here and in Wyoming and Montana.

Last winter he raced the Fur Rondy in ANC and he will again this winter and I will race (like last year) the Open in Fairbanks in March....

I almost PM you when I drove down to ANC last week... but I chicken out !!!!

Haha, I have been worrying about the same thing since I first found out when I was due!!! I'm thinking - great, I'm gonna go into labor on Thanksgiving and get the pissed off doctor who got called away from dinner with his family, LOL!!! I guess we'll just have to hope they understand - babies come when they are ready!

My due date was the day after Thanksgiving and I so wanted to have the baby on Thansgiving! The nice advantages- no scheduled c-sections and the nurses have to be there anyway, so most of them were looking forward to having patients. My nurse had volunteered to work TG because it is typically slow. . . It did not happen for me, but maybe for you! Oh, wait that is after your due date. . . maybe that is not the goal LOL!

Good luck these next few weeks!!!

What a drag about the EDD thing. Who knows when your baby will come, but when ever it does the time will be right. I know that my midwifes that I used last time each took a holiday to be on call. The one who actually delivered DD had said for a long time that she would be delivering me and that I would have a Christmas baby. Well she did deliver the baby, but we managed to miss Christmas (Thank the Lord).

I am getting mad after myself and OURSELF to not be set on names...
DH keep on finding GIRLS names.... some I agree on some NOT AT ALL for the boys names he disagree on the one I choose so...
for now (nothing decided yet !!)

GIRLS: chloe, maya, mathilda, aurora, Layla, Calli, Loli .....

BOYS : florent, Florian... I still LOVE TRISTAN but DH is completely NEGATIVE about it due to the french base "triste" which mean SAD !!!! hrrrrr

SO I figure we will be looking at our baby and still have no names picked out!!!

DO YOU THINK IT IS A SIGN WE WILL BE BAD PARENTS ????

Of course not! When you choose the name and how difficult of a time you have choosing it has nothing to do with your abilities to be parents. Some people don't decide until after the baby is born and they can see him or her and then know what the name should be. My mom changed her mind and named my youngest brother a name different from the one she's picked out, because once she saw him, it didn't fit him. I had an easy time with Tehani because she's a girl and girl names are easy and I pretty much knew from the first time I saw the name that I wanted it, and DH liked it, too. If Tehani had been a boy it would have been a lot harder to choose and agree. For your girl names, I like Maya and Aurora the best. I like Tristan, but I know my DH wouldn't like it either...Florent and Florian are nice, though.

Yeah, that!!! My parents ditched the name they had for me because I did not look like "Amanda Jane" and we did not decide with our daughter because we wanted to meet her. We have no names even remotely agreed on for this baby boy because DH doesn't like ANY!

You will find a name sometime before he remembers being without! Your parenting skills are not determined by what name you give to the baby or what would have happened to my father? His name is "Gayland" but he has never used it!

Magali - you and your DH will be great parents! Anyone who can take care of 100 dogs will be wonderful Smile

Picking a name is a big deal - don't beat yourself up that you don't have one yet. It's a lot of pressure! I love the name Tristan too.

I try not to pay too much attention to the meanings behind the names. Ironically, we're naming our boy "Dominic" which means "of god" and we're atheists!! Smile I just love the name!

We don't have ANY names yet, either. I was hoping that you'd have some "extra" boy names! LOL I've been told that we're required to have one for the birth certificate before we leave the hospital here and I want out of there ASAP after LO is born, so we need something. If it comes down to it, we'll have to name him after DH and FIL and then find a suitable nickname later. I really want to avoid this, though, as "Gordon Durwood" is just not fair to the little guy!

I'm sure that as soon as you see your LO you'll know the name. I like Tristan, too, but I can see your DH's problem. I love your girl names!

oh Magli, i think it's a sign that you are a normal couple!!! I have heard of many couples who go into the delivery with a list of names and sometime after the baby comes they decide what he/she looks like or what seems natural to call them. It'll be okay, one day the two of you will have a 'light bulb' moment and your baby will not go through life nameless, hehe

I am ATHEIST too and one of the criteria for the name is "no religion conjuction".... (that takes a lot of them off the list)...

We both like Joshua... but for me it only had been a type of dessert tree "joshua tree" in california, AZ etc... -- since I never read any Religion book I had no clue what it meant so when I read in the baby name book and I had to I write it off my list!! hrrrr

I have 3 more weeks right !!!!! baby should only decide to come out when we have a list of name "solid one" !!!!

Jenn -- we have great clothes (very $$$) so the cold isn't bad.... I have issues with my hands sicen I froze couple fingers..... but good mitts and chemical hand warmer does the job. I just have a problem with sleep deprevation....
SO THIS MKE ME WORRIES FOR THE BABY !!!!!

But I love my dogs and this helps....
So I figure I already love my baby so sleep deprevation shouldn't be has hard... right ????

For the winners...
I like Lance Mackey a lot and I can't stand Jeff King !!! Smile My friend Ken Anderson (who is just proud father of twins) is doing pretty good now....

How strange to hear all this Iditarod talk:) It was fun to see Lance win last year, he sure looked excited (I haven't actually watched a finish in real life but I was watching on TV when he came in). It would be nice to see someone new again this year, it's not as much fun to watch/hear about an old pro winning AGAIN. You'll be able to find a name when the baby comes, though I had a gal tell me she went into labor the night after she chose a name for her son so it you go over your dates you may think about it a bit. Are you all set with warm stuff for the baby? Are you giving birth in Fairbanks? Are you feeling well?

I hope having no name is not a sign of being bad parents or you may as well add me to the group as this little man is currently nameless as well. Naming your child is a HUGE deal, so don't worry that you can't decide, it may be better to actually meet him/her and get to know them for a little while before really deciding. That's what we plan on doing I think.

YES but this race is so hard you need top dogs and been top yourself it is very very hard.... I like Lance mentality (most of it anyway)...

Yes Magali, your baby will be fine in a sling under your parka (as long as your sure there is clear breathing for babe). People can't live inside for the winter just because they had a baby:) I had to wear DD in the middle of the winter and I just put my coat on over top of her in the sling. You won't believe how you see people carry tiny babies around in car seats uncovered with out hats ahhhhh, I don't even like to talk about it, it makes me soooo mad! I'm so excited to see pics of you and your hubby with your little one. I second that Alaska is a great place to live, and that it's less scarry animal wise then most any other state I know of. No snakes and only 1 or 2 poision spider (of which I have NEVER seen one), not too bad if you ask me.

Magali - how are you doing? Can we get some more pics of your beautiful Alaska? If I could stand the cold I would plan a trip up there. I'd love to see the country from boxcar.. can you tell i watch too much Travel Channel?

Dede you crack me up, when you say box car do you mean on a train? If you come in the summer/fall it's really not cold for the most part. It really is something worth seeing.

How are you doing today Magali? Hope all is well!
