Thanks, I can't believe it's this close already..

My story so far isn't all that exciting. My partner and I conceived on our first cycle, and my pregnancy has been very uneventful.

I got my BFP on May 24, a few days before my period was due (impatient!), and only took the one test. I was lucky enough to find a midwife who was taking patients around my due date (there's a shortage in the province and I know a few people who are are waiting lists), and she and my second midwife are excellent.

I'm planning a home water birth with my mother and DP attending along with the midwives. It took a little convincing to get DP to agree to the home birth, but he's come around completely. Yesterday when he was reading his 'expecting father' book he commented about how clinical a hospital birth sounds, with a note of disdain in his voice.

We didn't find out the sex, and haven't settled on any names yet, but most of the other stuff is ready to go. I had my strep B swab done earlier this week, but am still waiting on the results. Next week is my first home visit with my midwife, and after that I'll have a better idea of where we'll set up the tub, and everything else.

As for some background:

I met my DP 9 years ago, during my first year of university. He had gone to high school with a friend I made in the first week and a few of us went to a concert together. For the next four years or so we talked occasionally on ICQ, and saw each other at parties and stuff, but either one or both of us always had a boyfriend or girlfriend. In 2004 he started his masters at the university I was still attending (switch majors part way through), and we started hanging out more. By October of that year we were seeing each other nearly every day, and when the long distance relationship I was in continued to struggle I decided to end it. DP and I started dating a little while after that.

Three and a half years ago we bought a house together and a few months after that got ourselves a dog. I brought a cat into the relationship (who still hasn't come to terms with the fact that I don't have a lap anymore), so at the moment our family is made up of the four of us.

This will be the first grandchild for both our families, so our parents are finalizing their grandparent names.

Welcome to your lodge! I enjoyed reaing your intro. I'm excited to read about your homebirth. My DD is my parents' first grandchild and I remember them deciding their grandparent names when I was pregnant with her--they decided on "Nan" and "Poppy"--which DD can say much easier than "Grandma" and "Grandpa" for DH's parents (it sounds like "Ama" and "Ampa")

Back at work today (after two weeks off), for two more weeks. I brought in the birth ball to sit on, since my office chair was getting uncomfortable, but I think the ball might be a bit low...

I've vowed to start drinking two large mugs of raspberry leaf tea daily. I don't mind the taste much, find it tastes a lot like green tea, so it's just a matter of getting up and making it.

DP's started using the word nesting a lot lately, but I don't think I'm there yet. Most of the things I've been doing just need to be done, and vacation was a good time to do them. I told him if he finds me cleaning the fridge then he can safely assume there's nesting going on.

So last night was my 37 week appointment. My midwife came to the house to drop off my home birth kit, so she did my visit at the same time.

My GBS results were negative (yay!), my blood draw from last appointment shows that my iron is actually up from my prepregnancy levels (they were worried my ferritin was low, but it's up too!). My midwife was surprised since I've only been taking prenatals, said she's never seen levels go up with out more supplements.

I measured right on 37 weeks and the baby's heart rate was in the 130s. My blood pressure was 100/60. I didn't do the scale because my home scale isn't as accurate. I think I'm up around 20 lbs though.

We walked around the house and discussed the various places where I might want to labour etc. I just have to decide which floor of the house I want to be on.

She also asked if I'd be willing to have a student at the birth. I told her it was fine, and then she mentioned that one of their students is male. He's the first male midwife in the province, apparently, or will be. I told her the gender of the student didn't matter to me, after all he's going to face enough challenges, I'm sure. It was interesting because just yesterday I was wondering about male midwives and how many there were.

So that was my 37 week visit. Next week I meet my third midwife for the first time. She'll be the back up if I actually go into February, since my second is off for that month.

Yay for being GBS negative! That is interesting that your iron levels came back so high--that's good, though!

Still doing well. Most of the time I wouldn't know I was pregnant except for the random movements and occasionally bumping my belly into things, oh and the grunting when I try to bend over!

I have my 38 week appointment this afternoon, and a chiro appointment in 20 minutes, so I'll update later today.

Here's my belly as of yesterday:

You remind me of myself during my first pregnancy. My second has been easy also, but not quite as easy. Your belly looks awesome!

Looking forward to hearing about your appointment.

So the chiro appoitment went well. Like I said before, I haven't had many issues, so I mostly see her as a preventative thing (seems to be working, although I have nothing to compare it too). Our insurance covers it, so I figured it was worth a shot, and I do enjoy the shoulder rubs.

My midwife appointment was good too. I met my back up midwife for the first time. My second mw is off in February, so I have a third for if I'm late. I'm hoping to have this baby in January though, since I've built a nice relationship with both my midwives so far and look forward to having them at my birth.

My weight is at 160, about 20 lbs up from pre-pregnancy. Blood pressure was 106/64, and baby's heart rate was around 140. She measured me at 36 weeks, but my other mw measure 37 last week, so it just shows how it's an imperfect science. She did comment on how my belly was lovely to poke, she could easily tell were most of the body parts were, bumb front and centre, head down, feet to the right, and an elbow or something on the lower right. She said they don't normally worry about anterior or posterior until labour starts, so that's good.

I picked up the pool from the office too, while I was there. I wasn't sure which one I was getting, since my mw had requested it for me. They have an inflatable one and a trough-like one. So when I asked, the admin told me it was the inflatable one! It's a La Bassine, so now I have it in the car waiting to be inflated whenever I decide it should be.

I've been drinking my RRL tea, and got some evening primrose oil today, so I'm going to start taking it orally as of now, and vaginally after the weekend. Next week I'm going to step up the other natural induction techniques (I'm really hoping for a January babe!).

So do your midwives support the natural induction methods? (I assume they do since you're doing them.) I may start doing that around 37 weeks b/c of my past history with eclampsia and HELLP syndrome, as long as she's full term, the sooner she comes out, the better. I guess I'll find out from you if it works!

I had my ~39 week appointment this afternoon. I got to meet the student who will be attending the birth. My blood pressure was 112/62, beb's hr was 148 and is measuring between 38.5-39 weeks.

She and the student both palpated and measured. Beb is head down, low and they think he or she is anterior (yay!).

She attempted a stretch and sweep but.. she couldn't find my cervix! I couldn't find it the other day either, so it was good to know I wasn't alone. She seemed to think that because the baby's head is so low that the cervix might be behind it. She'll look again on Monday (assuming the beb hasn't arrived yet), but it was a little strange.

I'm a little tired now though. We have some friend's coming over for dinner tonight so I spent the morning cleaning the house. I'm pretty sure this isn't nesting, since I am actually having to force myself to do it...

Off to start cooking now. I will sleep well tonight!

So today is the magical EDD. Only 4 more days of January.

I had an appointment on Monday and luckily she found my cervix this time! She said she could get two fingers in, but not through, so she didn't do a sweep, but I'm just happy she found it! My blood pressure was good and the beb's heart rate was good. My next appointment isn't until next Thursday. I'm hoping I don't make it that far, but I'm sure the baby will come when it's good and ready.

I have a chiro appointment this morning. My sciatica has been annoying today so I'm looking forward to it.

I inflated the pool last week and got the hose and everything set up, I'm just running through lists of additional things I might want to have around. I picked up some powdered gatorade have been stocking the freezer with food and juice popsicles.

40 week belly:

I've been going a little stir crazy being at home all day with no one around.. I almost wish I was still working... It's better now that it's the weekend, but I hope I don't have another week to go through... I'm still feeling good physically, and sleeping fairly well, although a little lighter than normal. I'm hoping DP and I get the last few things in place for the birth today and then the rest will happen naturally.

I keep telling myself that the baby will come when he/she is supposed to, and I have to trust both our bodies to do what they need to.

I'm impressed by your attitude! We need more preggos like that and there would be far less inductions, and everything that comes with it! Mind you it *does* sound like you're still fairly comfortable so I'm sure that helps. Smile

One good thing about being overdue is that you have more time to get things ready! Although for me, I don't know if I'd ever be "ready" even if I had all the time in the world!

It sounds like you are doing well. Savor the good things about being pregnant, since it will probably be a while until you are pregnant again. Especially with it being your first pregnancy--you won't experience being pregnant for the first time ever again, and first pregnancies are really special.

Your baby will come when ready. One study showed that the average length of a first pregnancy when labor is allowed to begin spontaneously is 41 weeks 1 day, so you haven't even reached average yet.

Baby's still hanging out, I'm still fairly comfortable. My mom's coming up today to stay for the birth and a little while afterwards. I'm hoping the beb either comes today or tomorrow, or stays inside until at least Sunday. A good friend is moving to the UK at the beginning of March to be with her fiancée, and he's in town on Saturday. DP is sort of hosting the get together at his parent's place, so I'd like to be well enough to at least attend for a bit, or well enough that he can at least attend.

Last night the baby was moving around like mad. I think s(he) is trying to find the way out. At least that's what I'm hoping!

41 week update:

Had a midwife appointment this morning. Saw the student I hadn't before, who was nice. My cervix is still fairly posterior, so she had some trouble getting to it, so her mentor midwife (my second mw) came in and tried the membrane sweep too, with success. She said it was soft and open (about 2 cm, but she could stretch to 3), but still about a cm of height left. Baby is low, head down still, and seems happy.

I had an ultrasound this afternoon just to check on fluid levels etc. and the u/s tech said the baby seemed very comfortable, lots of fluid, good heart rate (145) and lots of movement. So I'm going to get comfy too, enjoy my full nights of sleep and quiet time. The only (slightly) concerning thing was the technician estimated the weight at 8.5 lbs. I still don't think s(he)'s that big, but now there's a seed in my head that they might be.

I'm glad your MW was able to do the sweep. I'm also glad that you and baby are still looking healthy and everything checked out with fluid levels, etc. I wouldn't worry about the weight estimate. They can be off by a lot. How big were you as a baby? Your baby is likely to be about the same size. Our bodies typically only grow babies who are the size we are able to push out. Even if the baby is 8 and a half pounds, that isn't *that* big--all of my mom's babies were more than 8 lbs, and she is a petite woman and had them all vaginally just fine.

I was 7lb9 (at 41w1), and DP was just over 7, and I've been measuring on target throughout the pregnancy. I'm not really worried, I'm sure my body can handle it, it was just surprising to hear. I think they're probably wrong, but only time will tell Smile

Nope, no baby today, but that's okay. I think I've got a second wind, so I'm content waiting some more. I'm thinking this might be a sunday baby, or as the woman at the grocery store put it, a super bowl baby.

Thanks for all the nice words.

Maybe all this waiting will mean a quick, easy labour... Apparently my aunt had 4 very quick labours (a hour or so), and she's the closest genetic link I have since my mom had two sections because I was flipped around all wrong.

Still no baby, but I lost a bit of my mucous plug yesterday morning and had some contraction off and on most of the day. Last night around 3, when I went to the bathroom I think I lost the rest of the plug and had a decent amount of bright red blood when I wiped. I'm going to give my midwife a call this morning just to make sure the blood isn't anything to worry about, but I have my regular appointment this afternoon either way.

Sorry about the delay, long story short we transfered quickly and I didn't have any communication devices with me. Here's the story so far. I haven't finished processing yet, but here it is:

Jack's long story

I had an appointment Monday morning, and Went into labour on Monday evening. My midwife had made an appointment to induce Wednesday if there was no baby yet, and a meeting with the OB on Tuesday morning. I was up all night Monday with contractions coming every 6-10 minutes. I called my midwife in the morning to ask if I should still go see the OB and she said it would be a good idea, just in case. When I got there (9 a.m.) she (the OB) witnessed one of my contractions and said she would do an internal check before anything else. I was already 7 cm. And the labour had been pretty manageable. The OB said she'd call my midwife and tell her she was sending me home to have a baby.

My midwife arrived shortly after, maybe around 10:30, and started getting her stuff unpacked. We started filling the pool. I continued to labour for a while and around 1 decided to check my progress. I was 8.5/9 cm, so we discussed rupturing the membranes. She said it would help things along, and I was starting to get a little tired (having been up since 5:30 Monday morning), so she broke them and they were nice and clear (and plentiful! tmi, she lined some underwear with a bunch of pads afterwards, and when I got up I felt a second huge gush and sort of froze, the mw and student asked if I was okay as though I was stopped because of pain or something, but I just said I felt a lot of fluid. I don't think they believed me until I started overflowing all the pads they'd given me, and then continued to fill the chux pads they put on the floor underneath me. I don't think either of them had ever seen so much fluid! So at least the baby had been comfy!).

After that the contractions got stronger and so I got into the pool. I started falling asleep a couple of times between contractions (still only about 5 minutes apart), and after about an hour it was suggested that I get out of the pool for a while since I wasn't progressing (still 8.5/9). I got out and started walking around, and the contractions got a lot more painful. I was still feeling ok between them, but was getting really tired. Mike was great at holding me through them and being super supportive. Eventually though I got back in the pool for some relief. At around 3:30 my mw checked me, and I still had a lip. We discussed options at that point, because I was so tired and things weren't progressing, and decided that we would go to the hospital so I could get some pain relief and some rest. Obviously not the plan, but the best decision given the circumstances. Long story short, about 5 minutes afer I got the epi, the midwife checked and I was fully dialated. I pushed for a while, but not being able to feel anything really effected that, and after a while with not much progress the baby's heart rate started to drop everytime I started pushing, and there was now merconium present, so the midwives called for an OB consult and the OB said they could try the vacuum or forcepts but that they felt it was just really tight and would likely end in a section. So after talking to my midwife (who had been in a similar situation with her daughter 18 months ago) and Mike, I decided just to get the section without the other stuff.

Jack Maurice was born at 9:10 p.m. on February 9, 7lb 15oz, 20" long and 14.5" head.

He had turned posterior at some point and was likely not going to come out on his own. He's happy, healthy and perfect. He's feeding well and we got to come home yesterday afternoon, a day early. I haven't made it to a computer long enough to finish this until now.
