Congratulations on your lodge! Can't wait to get to know you and follow your journey:)
Woot! Thanks Kristin and everyone else! I am so excited to have a lodge. I will post an intro soon, need to eat lunch first. But thanks ladies, I have learned so much here and feel that this is one of the best support boards out there!!
Yeah! Welcome to your lodge! I can't wait to read your intro!
Congrads Lexi!!!! I'm so jealous... i can't wait to read your lodge! I'm very very very happy for you!
Here's my intro...
DH and I met on match.com. Not to be corny, but it was pretty much love at first sight for both of us. Within 6 months we moved in together and then 4 months later he got offered a job half way across the country. He asked me to move with him and I did!! We got married a year later. And then the month after that we conceived dd. I know, it was a whirlwind, but we are both 35, so I think it worked out well for us. He's my soul mate and my best friend.
My pg with dd was great, up until 33wks. I woke up in the middle of the night on 10/16/06 with a horrible pain in my back. It was so bad, I actually thought dh had kicked me or something in his sleep. It was really painful all the next day and it wasn't getting any better. I went to the dr., they admitted me to the hosp, did a bunch of tests and decided it was my kidney causing the pain.
I went to a urologist who said my kidney was 3x the size it should be. Either I had a stone, or the baby was putting pressure on my ureter to cause a blockage. The ureter is the tube that brings the urine down from the kidney to the bladder. My left ureter was all kinked up and no urine was draining into my bladder on that side. The pain was horrible.
At 34 wks, I had a tube put in my back to drain my kidney. I had to keep it in until dd was born. They don't give you anesthesia for this procedure, it was done under a local and pain meds. It was the worst pain of my life. Labor and contractions do not even compare to that pain. I still have nightmares about it. I had to have a pee bag outside my body attached to the tube to collect the urine. For the next 6 wks until dd was born, I was taking pain meds a lot and was pretty much on bed rest.
I learned about natural childbirth pretty much by accident. Before all this kidney stuff had started, I was reading the LLL breastfeeding book. It had a chapter about how epidural's can effect bfeeding. I had no clue prior to this that natural birth is much better and healthier for mom and baby. I also didn't know that interventions could affect bfeeding. It was like a light was switched on in my head. I knew then that I wanted to try and have a NCB.
Long story short. Unfortunately, I think due to my kidney issues and being a FTM, I just wasn't really prepared for a natural birth. I panicked when labor started and I got way too stressed out and couldn't progress. Contractions were 7-10 mins and they lasted like that for over 12 hrs, with no progression. I stayed at 3 cm forever it seemed like. Labor with dd ended up being over 30hrs long. I ended up getting an epi, and pit, but was able to birth her vaginally after 2 1/2 hrs of pushing. It was a long hard road, but luckily I avoided a csection. Even though I found out recently that the dr that delivered dd has the highest section rate in my area.
I am okay with the fact I had an epi and a few interventions. I had done my research, I knew what my options were. I just don't think I was prepared to handle it at that time. However, I did have 2 really bad blood pressure drops due to the epi and also developed a fever. So I know that I don't react well to an epi and I'm really lucky that dd handled it better than I did. Otherwise I'm sure I would have gotten a c/s.
Fast forward to now. I am still crossing my fingers, but I am now 3 wks past the point where my kidney started to hurt with my last pg. :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:
I've been so scared that my kidney will start hurting and I'd have to go through that hell again. But as each day passes, I get more optimistic that it won't happen again.
DH and I did lots more research, watched BOBB, and we hired a doula. She is fantastic. One of my friends used her for both of her births and said she was amazing. Our doula has 5 kids and had her last 2 naturally. I am so excited to have her at my birth. She's been doing this for almost 10 yrs and I feel very comfortable with her.
I really think that the combo of having a doula and me knowing what to expect this time will really help me have the natural birth that I desire. I know it's going to be hard and painful, but I keep telling myself that it's pain with a purpose. That's key for me. To remember that my body is made to do this and it won't last forever. And in the end I get to see my son, that's the best part.
Thanks for reading my story! I am so excited to be here!
Welcome to your lodge!! :woohoo: I love your intro and your pics are beautiful!
Hi Lexi! Great intro! Looking forward to reading your lodge.
I can't believe November mamas are already getting lodges here. WOW!!
You look wonderful! I think we need some recent belly pics though, your so tiny in those pics:) What a beautiful fam you have, a little boy is going to be so much fun! Have you been reading much this time around? If you have what's been your favorite read? Is your DD excited to see her little brother?
I was really nervous about this appt, because we were going to show the dr our birth plan. It went really well though!! She read it over and only made one small adjustment. She asked to make a copy of it, signed it, and said she would put in my records, so it will be sent up to the hosp for delivery. She agreed to intermittent monitoring, Hep lock, maintain mobility, labor in own clothes, choice of position for pushing, etc. All good stuff since I'll be in a hosp setting.
Other than that, bp good, baby's heart rate was great, and no other problems.
I start going every week now. I got the GBS test today and will have my results at my next appt. I also declined the cervical check and she was fine with that too.
I have to call our doula today to schedule our next prenatal appt. She's going to go over all the comfort measures and different techniques to help me during labor. She's also going to teach dh a bunch of stuff too to help me with the contractions.
What a great Dr.! Good luck on the GBS results.
Just out of curiosity - What was the adjustment to your birth plan?
First, welcome to your lodge!
Second, great intro, sorry about the hell you went through with dd
third, yay for a great appointment! negative GBS vibes coming your way!
Welcome to your lodge!!
Great intro and welcome to your lodge!
Glad your appointment went so well, that is great! I'm curious what the adjustment was as well?
Let's see, I've read The Bradley Method by Susan McCutcheon, The Thinking Woman's Guide, Birthing From Within, and DH is reading The Birth Partner right now.
The adjustment my dr made to my birth plan had to do with AROM. I had put that I didn't want AROM at all. She asked us if we would consider AROM if the baby was in distress and they felt it was necessary to go to internal monitoring. We said that we would prefer not to have AROM, but if baby really was in distress we wouldn't say no. It was the only thing she asked us to compromise on. I also made sure she knew that we wouldn't consent to AROM for any other reason, to speed up labor, etc.
Sounds like a great appointment. The compromise doesn't sound too bad either. for a great appointment and (((NEGATIVE GBS))) vibes:)
Hey Lexi --
glad you had a great appointment today. Any chance we might see the birth plan?
totally curious, funny even with a great birth, there are plenty of changes I want to make for the 2nd time around (AROM for example, I let them break it before i started pushing, kind of wish that I hadn't done that now...)
i'm totally stalking your lodge every day, hoping you have a new post (kind of pathetic, but you are the one person I kind of know...) he he...
Sounds like you have a great doctor!
YAY welcome to your lodge, great intro and pics. I'm glad your doc was so receptive to your birth plan! sending you neg. vibes!!! I'm looking forward to sharing this journey with you!
I don't mind sharing my birth plan at all. Even though I already gave it to my dr. If anyone sees anything that maybe I want to rethink, please let me know. It's a pretty generic one, I got it off childbirth.org. I didn't want to make it too involved, but wanted to make my most impt wishes known.
Thanks for reading!

Great birth plan! I love that your Dr. agreed to leave a hand free if you needed a c-sec, mine just plain refused!
Sounds like a great plan. I am so excited for you. Cannot wait to hear about your journey.
WOW!! Sounds like a great doctor! I bet you can't wait!
I'm glad you had a great appointment and your birth plan looks good!
How are you today?
your birth plan sounds amazing.
Just thinking of you hope all is well.
Your birth plan is really good! I like how easy it is to read and specific. You really thought of all the situations.
Yay!! Welcome to your birth lodge! I loved the intro, although sorry to hear about how things went with your dd. Cute pics too. It sounds like you have a great doctor and I have to say your birthplan looks great!
Ugh, I'm doing just okay today. One of my stupid cats peed on dd's carrier for one of her baby doll's. It was on the floor and they must have sat in it and peed and it was cloth, so of course it went through and got all on the carpet. I'm so grossed out. The last thing I want to be doing at this point is scrubbing cat pee out of a carpet.
I'm trying to keep dd busy, so I try to plan a lot of outings with our mom's group. Today we went to our local botanical gardens to watch them release a butterfly for the first time. It was fun and dd had a great time! I can't believe how sore I feel though. My whole mid section is sore and achy. I guess it's to be expected, sigh, but it's hard keeping up with a toddler at this point. And then she didn't nap today, you'd think all the fresh air would have tired her out, but no.
But, at least it's Friday!!! I'll have DH to help me corral the kid all weekend. My friends in my mom's group are throwing me a little shower on Sun too, so it should be nice to get out for a little alone time.
Sorry you are having a bad day, but the outing sounds fun. There must be something in the air because it took forever to get Hawkes down and then he barely napped.
You are SO CUTE!
I am super late, but just wanted to say congrats on being in the homestretch! Hope you have a great weekend!
Great birth plan details... and congrats to a fellow November mommy!
Great intro! I can't wait to read your birth story!
I'm on a cleaning spree. I didn't nest last time, so this is all new to me. I've washed the car seat cover, and scrubbed the plastic part. I've vacuumed, dusted and plan to wash the floors tomorrow. I've got the cradle bedding all washed and it's ready for a baby!!
My ankles are swelling. I look like I have two sprained ankles, it's a little uncomfortable. I also have a lot of pain in my hands and joints. Not huge problems, but a little annoying. I have a dr's appt tomorrow morning, and I find out my GBS status. So wish me - vibes please!!!!! Also, we have a doula appt tomorrow night to go over our comfort measures, etc. I'm excited to learn some positive ways to manage labor.
((((negative GBS Vibes))))
make sure you take lots of breaks so you dont wear yourself out! You never know when labor can sneak up on you, and you wouldnt want to be caught exhausted from cleaning all day...
I say this because today I spent 2 hours on my hands and knees scrubbing the bathroom tub and floor and the base boards...and I couldnt do anything else the rest of the day! I literally couldnt lift anything for a couple hours...can you imagine if my water broke at that time:eek:
Good luck at your appt...are you going to get checked?
sending negative GBS vibes your way!
I agree on the taking breaks during nesting. You have a big physical event coming up and you don't know when it will start!
I nested with DD, but when it came to the day before she was born (I was in early labor all day) I spent most of the day in and out of the tub and napping I think your body will tell you when to stop:) I hope your GBS test comes back - tomorrow! KUP and have a great day.
Here's sending you tons of NEGATIVE GBS vibes!!!!
Woot!! I'm so excited, now I don't have to have the IV. Everything else is good, bp, urine, baby h/b is in the 160's and has been for quite some time.
The dr told me to get some wrist braces for my carpal tunnel and to try and drink more water to combat the swelling. I picked up some braces at Target, so hopefully they'll help me sleep better. I woke up so many times last night and my arms were completely numb and painful. I could barely use them to push myself out of bed to pee. eek.
At my appt, the nurse told me to get undressed from the waist down. I said, what for? She said "for a cervical check, you're over 36wks right?"
I told her that I had my 36 wk appt last week and that I declined the check then and don't want to be checked at all. She gave me an annoyed/confused look, but then said that's fine, you don't have to be checked. Well, no kidding. I had no idea that they check people every week there. Glad I'm not going along with that.
So we've got our doula appt tonight and I feel like I'm getting all the final preparations in place for the birth. I'm getting so excited!!
Yay for no IV and GBS-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like you're doing really great!
Sounds like a great appt!
I am so jealose of anyone GBS -.....but I am happy for you!
You are so close!
