Aw, thanks ladies! I'm so excited to have my lodge. This is such a neat tradition. It reminds me of a sweat lodge or other Native American lodge. Is that where the term came from?

I've been waiting for Kai to take his nap so I could come into my lodge and introduce myself in a more relaxed way.

As I now feel in a native mood, here is the traditional and proper Navajo way to start an introduction:

Ya'at'eeh! Shi ei Birdie Matern yinishye. Tachinii ei nishli doo Beshbichanii bashishchiin. Aadoo Taodachinii ei da shichei doo Beshibichanii eida shinali. Phoenix dee ilyishi naasha. Doo Elko dishi'dizhchi'.

Translated, that means:
Hello! My name is Birdie Matern. I am of the Red Runs into the Water Clan and born for the Hard Hats clan. My maternal grandfather is of the Bitter Water Clan and my paternal grandfather is of the Hard Hats clan. I am from Phoenix and I was born in Elko.

(My dad is white and of Germany descent. Hard Hats is what the Navajos call Germans. I think its for the hard helmets worn in WWII!)

I married my husband, Steve, 2 years ago. We met online and didn't wait long to meet each other. I had met my first husband online and that ended sadly, after a 3 year marriage. I had just started dating again and things weren't going so well with the internet dates. So my friends and I said if this didn't work out with Steve, I was to quit the internet stuff. After our 1st date, we were pretty sure things would work out and that we would marry. I think when you meet as "older" people, you get down to the nitty gritty quickly and look at what matters most to you in finding a companion. For us, it was family, religion, job stability, and some other stuff.

Steve is 45 and from South Africa. He's lived in South America in his job as a civil engineer and then moved to the US about 18 years ago. I am 38, and being the daughter of Lutheran medical missionaries, I grew up in Vietnam, Nepal and India. Having international and 3rd world experiences really help to connect Steve and me together. I still haven't been to visit South Africa and am itching to go. He only has 1 out of his 3 siblings left there, but it would be lovely to visit him.

Here's a pic of Steve and me on our wedding day:

Even before my divorce was finalized, Steve and I were very serious about each other. We knew marriage would happen soon, so instead of waiting for insanely slow wheels of justice to churn, we decided to just get pregnant. Neither one was us was getting any younger and we were itching to get on with it! Marriage would eventually happen. I geared up for a long period of TTC, but I conceived on the 2nd cycle. Kai was born Feb 2006. I'm a huge addict of the Feb 06 birth board.

Here is Kai at 18 months (he's now almost 22 months):

I'm a family doctor. I graduated from med. school in 1991 and then did my family medicine residency at the county hospital here in Phoenix. After residency, I did a fellowship in obstetrics in Memphis. We deliver so many babies here at the county hospital as family practice residents that I ended up really enjoying obstetrics (I didn't really care for it coming out of medical school). But I felt I wanted to know how to help women with high risk pregnancies and how to do a c-section. The idea was to practice rurally and/or in the 3rd world. There, those skills would be invaluable. Life hasn't lead me to those places yet, but hope springs eternal. Steve and I hope to give our children life experiences int he 3rd world someday.

I posted this in the belly pics sticky, but here you go again if you missed it. I need to take another pic today.

So we're expecting a little girl around about Jan. 6th. I've been feeling pretty good except for backache. I'm also a preterm contractor. I did the same thing in my pregnancy with Kai. I don't really hurt, they're just rather uncomfortable at times. I just try to ignore them. We don't have any names for our daughter yet. Some vague ideas. Kai wasn't named until he was about 8 hours old, so I expect the same will happen this time. Here she is (from about a month ago):

I'll be birthing at a hospital with an obstetrician. I hated leaving my family practice doc for the obstetrician, but she is so busy as the director of a family practice residency, and couldn't really give me the attention I want. I'll be using Hypnobabies and a doula this time around and I think I'm getting a much better preparation for a NCB. I'm even looking forward to this birthing!

Kai wakes, must run! Thanks for the lodge girls!

Love your intro. Smile :) Smile It is so neat that you want to be able to work in 3rd world countries.

I remember last time you had AROM and you were insistent about avoiding it this time. Also, is it weird being a doctor and going to a doctor? Lol

Wonderful intro Birdie. You have always been such a fascinating woman to me. And you look absolutely stunning in your wedding picture!

What is your favourite part of being pregnant?

DITTO! What a gorgeous bride you were!

I loved reading your intro! What an amazing life you've had thus far! I feel so plain and ordinary now! Lol And I think it's awesome that you've avoided the pit falls of a lot of doctors (NOT ALL but A LOT) who think of pregnancy as pathology. And it's so awesome that you're using Hypnobabies as well! How are you finding it? Are you doing the homestudy or do you have access to classes in your area?

Welcome to your lodge Birdie. What a nice intro you put together. I look forward to sharing your birthing journey with you. I'd love to know about Kai's birth. You mentioned that you are looking forward to this birth and I am curious how you hope it will be similar and different with your little girl.

Sometimes. Most of the time I want to just be part of the herd. Special treatment can equate to indecision or delayed decision sometimes, it seems. But if I get spoken too in idiot language I waste no time letting it be known that I'm very well educated!

Hmmmm...I'm not sure! I love to be pregnant. I guess it's the extra attention. I love my belly too. And her kicks. And just the awesomness of the whole thing. It's incredible.

There aren't any classes in Phoenix, unfortunately. I think there are some in Tucson, but I'm not willing to drive down there. So I'm doing the homestudy. That is so awesome that your DH is doing it with you. That is so cool. My doula is looking it over now. I was with you on the cheese factor to start with. It's gotten better, but I occasionally have a "how cheesey is this? attack! I'm faithful in doing it and practicing and am trying so hard to chase away my doubts.

Hi Erika! I posted Kai's story in the birth stories sticky and then I posted my issues with it in the healing sticky. The plan this time is to labor as long as possible at home and so avoid interventions (especially AROM) at the hospital. I deliver babies myself and try to do so in a more MW fashion. I have a cool OB, but just in case he's not on call or around, I'm-gearing up to ward off the can't-keep-my-hands-off "care".

Welcome to your lodge! : )

I think its really cool that you want to expose your children to other countries/cultures! My parents were short term missionaries and I love that I was able to see how other people live. I think it is a real gift!

And I agree with PP, you made a very beautiful bride! : )

I'm so excited for you. You will constantly be in my thoughts in prayers over the next few months. You are such a great mom with Kai and what a heritage you have to pass on to your children. You've been a huge blessing to me on the Feb board and I'm starting to get a little itchy to TTC and go for a NCB VBAC. You are loved and thought of often during this blessed time. HUGS and BLESSINGS. Christopher sends kisses too!

Oh, Tara, you silly girl, of course you're allowed to post here! I love ya too! And thanks, Tracey!

Had my OB appointment yesterday afternoon. My doula came with me. Her name is Ginny. If I can get passed the makeup, hair and accent, I really like her. She's a sweet soul.

The appointment it's self was uneventful. BP, urine, weight, belly size and position (vertex and likely LOT) are all good. The doctor got called to the hospital right before seeing me for an imminent delivery. But it was a false alarm called by an inexperienced nurse. So he was back quickly, although somewhat annoyed, I think! I didn't mind waiting - it happens. Besides, it gave me time to warm up to Ginny. The next appointment is in a week.

We have some vague ideas. I'm sure the name will come to us after we've seen her.

great intro and awesome pictures, Birdie!! I love lodges and how we get a really good look into each other's lives from them. I had no idea you were Native American descent. That is so interesting.

Good luck in the rest of your pregnancy. I look forward to following your lodge!!

Hi Birdie! I love the professional picture... wow... just incredible... what a great photo.

Ok, so this is kind of random... i was looking at your belly picture progression from your intro post, and your hair has grown SOOO quickly! It was really short at the 20 wk mark and now its way way past your shoulders... i thought my hair grew fast but not THAT fast! Biggrin

My hair was up in a clip that day. Everyone thinks my hair grew so fast!

Had an OB appointment today. I disinvited DH as I believed it would be a quick and boring appointment. It was. And he was relieved to be able to stay at work and continue to chip away at whatever he's chipping away at so frantically. So I brought mom and Kai instead. BP, urine, weight all check out fine. I declined the vaginal exam. My doctor is leaving on vacation tomorrow and won't be back until the 29th. So....stay put little girl. But honestly, either one of his partners is fine with me. Both very nice and well trained (they all trained where I did! Smile ), and I just consider them my life guards anyway. I don't really need them, right?

Thanks for all the compliments on the belly photo. I'm so please with them. I got them done as I was getting very sad thinking that this might be my last pregnancy.

How am I feeling? VERY pregnant. I just about have the freezer stocked, then I'm going to quit the kitchen altogether. My back aches so BAD after making one lousy meal. There are a few more achey, cramp type pressure waves now and again, but nothing that is causing much cervical change, I don't think. Other than that, I'm good!

I love that phrasing! Lifeguards...they are nice to have if you are drowning, but as long as you are treading water, they can stay on the shoreline, LOL.

Your belly pic is gorgeous. TFS.

YAY for having the freezer nearly stocked! I always say I am gonna do that and I never do  Maybe this time Wink

Does Kai get the whole "there is gonna be a new baby" thing, or still oblivious?

Hope you can find some relief for your back- I hate that part of late pgcy, but love the expectant-ness of it all! Biggrin

It's hard to say. He pats my tummy and says, "Baby" and kisses it, but I wonder if he really gets it.

My doula came over today to meet my DH, practice some Hypnobabies scripts and give me a massage. It was a lovely massage and I totally fell asleep! I was started to falter on my confidence with Hypnobabies, but that's been bolstered too.

Has anyone dealt with pubic symphsis pain in pregnancy before? It's just bad at night, so that when I get up to pee sometimes I can bearly walk. Doesn't bother me so much in the day.

Slept like poop last night - had crampy contractions all night long. But get this. If I lay on my left side, they were just kind of squeezes. If I lay on my right side, they hurt. I can't figure that one out. Another

The massage sounds great!!! How nice!

I have the same symphsis pain, also more at night. I just figured it was because I was more stiff. :dontknow:

That's strange that the contractions feel different on your other side! Good to know for future reference!!!

I had HORRIBLE symphysis pubis pain in my first pregnancy. Not so bad this time around. The hardest thing was rolling over in the middle of the night. I would literally hear (and feel) a loud CRACK when I moved. Sad This time I saw an osteopath for adjustment, which helped.

Maybe the left side/right side thing is blood flow? How strange. Horray for a massage, though!!

Gorgeous photo!!

I have SPD which is very manageable with osteopathy, 2 visits and I only go in now if I put something out. For me, it was my lower back popping in and out and pulling at my pubic bone in front. The Dr also suggested it was pressure from the baby pushing against it, but it didn't feel as 'right' as my lower back. I had some hienous LB pain which disappeared along with my pubic bone pain......
Since being 'adjusted' I have focused on my posture, especially when walking. Making sure I don't waddle or let my belly hang, I still use my stomach muscles. A couple of good exercises to help strengthen the appropriate muscles are - put a fist between your knees whilst sitting and push your legs closed firmly. The other is to hold your knees together with your hands and push your legs open against your hands.
HTH!

I had SPD and was so worried about labor...I was so glad that it totally dissipated at that point, as she dropped lower into my pelvis. Getting out of bed at night and rolling over were awful, but getting out of the car was no picnic either, LOL.

Glad you are doing well and enjoyed your massage!

Birdie, what a fantastic photo! Wow, post more any time!

I had some pubic pain during pregnancy. Even now 21 months later, I can still tell when it is going to rain or snow. It lessens over time though, so you can look forward to that.

You're getting close!

I know Kristin can relate to this. Kai has been giving me a run for it of late. He's perfecting the tantrum. And skipping naps. Which means I don't nap. That combined with poor rest at night because of crampy pressure waves leave me with little patience or energy for him. Then I feel guilty for being snappish. And of course, I'm terribly worried about how I will handle two little ones. Thank GAWD my mom lives around the corner - I shutter to think having to do this without her. And my sisters will be in town after this birthing to help too. So for the first few days to weeks I'll have plenty of help, but what about later? I need a Hypnochildren script with positive affirmations telling me that I can do this!!!

Other than being exhausted and snappish, I guess I'm doing OK. These prodromal pressure waves can wear one down though, eh? I think I'll try to make it to yoga class this evening and get an attitude adjustment.

Had an appointment today. It was absolutely uninteresting, which is great, I guess. The doc today was the other partner I haven't met yet. He went through labor precautions, etc ad nauseum, not realizing I'm an MD myself. Ho hum. At least he's thorough. Seems nice enough and when I pointed out my birth preferences and use of Hypnobabies, he was not phased. He simply asked what in there I wanted him to pay particular attention to. I immediately told him about my AROM phobia. He said they are very flexible and seemed encouraging. Anyway, my doc starts his stint of call nights tomorrow, so hopefully, this LO will catch onto that and start to head on out. Get it?? Ha, ha....head on out!!! I kill myself.

Also, I'm wishing you a wonderful and fulfilling NCB. Strange as it may sound, I fondly remember laboring - bringing Nathaniel into the world naturally was such a powerful and empowering experience, something to truly cherish.

Hi girls! Still here. And still pregnant. Here's some proof - my belly progression pics:

Seems my belly has really gotten quite a bit bigger in the last 2 weeks or so. I hadn't realized it until I looked at the pics.

I had BH through out the night and now through out the day as well. I normally have quite a few, but I had 4-6 per hour all day long today - more than my usual. So I nested like crazy today. I got the oil changed on the car and bought new tires for it. I bought out Target and the grocery store. I cleaned house and organized. Now I'm exhausted. I shan't be attending a New Year's Eve party as previously planned - too grouchy and need to rest up anyway.

Kai continues to be such a challange of late. There was a big throw down tantrum this morning, and he's ended up in our bed the last 2 nights in a row. I really think he senses there's about to be a big change and he's feeling insecure. I can't get him to nap in his crib anymore. But sometimes I can get him to lie down with me at naptime. We had a nice nap together today. I love listening to his little snores.

So that's all the latest from this tiny corner of the world. I'll keep up updated, of course! Smile

I just read your post in the Healing Thread. I admire you for knowing that you must move on when you have so much disappointment about the AROM. Hugs to you.

Can't wait to hear the news!
