Oh, thank you, Laura! It'll be your turn again soon - isn't it weird to think May '06 is almost two years ago now?? I'm just blushing to think I have a lodge and have to put something in it...I don't even know what to say! And trying to keep up with the April '08 board keeps me so busy I never have time to look at May '06 - well, I've peeked once or twice, but I'm soooo out of the loop...I'm going to go figure out what to put here now. I've had so much cramping lately that part of me thinks I'd better hurry up or there won't be time to have a lodge before my LO gets here (watch me go overdue for jinxing myself!).

Congrats on your lodge, Karina! (And go May 2006! ;))

How does this pregnancy compare to your previous ones? I know you practically hit your EDD with both boys.

Welcome Karina! LOL about jinxing yourself! I jinxed myself for sure. I thought I was in labor every other day since 36 weeks, and look at me now! Jeesh! Shoulda just kept my mouth shut, lol!

I hope these last few weeks (or days!) of your pregnancy are smooth and easy!

You know, it is amazing what we forget! All I can say is, this is more uncomfortable than I remember it being last time - there is a lot of cramping and running to the bathroom this time that I don't remember with Theo. Mind you, Max was probably the hardest pregnancy on my body; I had horrible edema at the end and couldn't even walk around the block, plus I had gained an awful lot of weight (65 lbs compared to 50 last time and 40 so far this time). But, yes, Max was one day "early" and Theo was one day "late," so I have nothing to base it on if I am secretly hoping Anna will come sooner. I am 40 now and I really don't want to put my body through this anymore...I am feeling my age. I will post a proper intro to show how haggard I have become since getting married less than five years ago (three kids later...)!

OK, a bit about me:

My name is Karina and I'm 40 years old. I've been married to Doug (also 40) for nearly five years, although we started dating 11 years ago this Easter. (It took a while to drag him to the altar!) Anyway, by the time we got our act together, we decided to get busy with babies so that we wouldn't be feeling too old and creaky with newborns in the house. Max was born in 2004, Theo in 2006, and Anna is expected in about 3 weeks (April 14). Then we are done with having babies!

I have been very fortunate to conceive quickly with each baby and have healthy, uneventful pregnancies. Max was born in a hospital with an OB, and had a few problems initially which I can in hindsight blame on my epidural. I was determined to avoid this after that experience and subsequently had Theo at home with a midwife, which was WONDERFUL! I am planning a home birth for Anna as well, which I can only hope goes as smoothly as Theo's birth, which was pretty ideal (3 hours total, zero complications).

Having three kids in diapers is exhausting (I had hoped to have Max trained, but it isn't going as planned...), and I am feeling every bit my age these days (perhaps this will get better as we move out of the infant stage for this last one...? wishful thinking?). To give you some idea, here are some photos of DH and I just under five short years ago, still fairly bright eyed and skinny at 35 years of age:

And here we are now, in our most recent Xmas portrait (OK, DH looks pretty much the same, but HE'S not the one who had the babies!!!):

This is me at 36 weeks and 5 days:

BUT, of course, it has all been worth it. These are our boys, and we couldn't be happier with them:

MAX: THEO:

And here is Anna, so far:

Thanks for looking, and I look forward to seeing all your lodges and meeting your babies on line - this site has been a sanity saver for this SAHM, and so full of wonderful people that I feel like I know already...I can't go a day without checking in!!! Smile

Welcome to your lodge, you are beautiful!!! I love the wedding pics. I am in my thirties but can definetly tell. Pregnancy was so much easier in my twenties Smile Or maybe I just remember it that way, or possibly it's the addition of the four kids running around?

You guys are awesome. I feel so good after coming here to my own lodge!

I canceled my MW appt today because I feel rotten with a cold and I don't want the MW to catch it! So I asked her a couple of questions over the phone...

She said the large abdomen on the u/s is not a concern; they would be worried if it measured small, but if it is big the baby probably just swallowed some amniotic fluid, or else is just plain plump!

And the posterior positioning is also not a concern; with third babies, it is extremely likely she will just turn during labour (and both my others did, so I guess that's just how I bake 'em).

Feeling relieved that all is "normal," I'm off to nurse my cold (as best I can with two equally snotty kids to look after...)...

So sorry to hear you are sick! I'm just getting over my 3rd cold since January (thanks, DD!) and it really makes the pregnancy symptoms worse (pg sleeping w/o a cold is bad enough!)

I'm glad they aren't worried about your LO's tummy size & position. I hope she turns before you endure too much back labor, though!

And BTW, I thought I posted it previously but I always love looking at all your pics. You are such a beauty, and you look just as gorgeous now as you did on your wedding day. You don't look anywhere near your age, and motherhood is very becoming to you. Smile And your boys are soooo cute!

I haven't checked your lodge in awhile! Haggard?!?! Woman you look fantastic! You're every bit as bright-eyed as you were 5 years ago - beautiful!

ITA w/ you about epidurals causing a downward spiral. If I knew then what I know now...your homebirth sounds fantastic, though! Are you planning on birthing in a pool/tub or just whereever the urge strikes you? I think it's so fascinating and wish we lived closer to the hospital so I could try it!

Good update! It's a relief to see that a posterior baby has a chance of turning in labor with BTDT moms.

Oh, you guys have NO IDEA how nice it is to get such compliments when every day IRL I feel like a bag 'o poo - SOOOO ready to meet my LO at this point!!

Yeah, the cold is a downer - I have been a bit negative lately and need to turn that around...

SO, looking forward to the birth, I am starting to believe it is real (LOL, it never really hits until the time comes!), I have all the supplies in the house (now to tape down some plastic on our white carpets...), and I just want to get rid of this cold so we can get started!

I will labour wherever the urge strikes - that is what I did last time and it served me well; I was mostly walking around, alternating with being on all fours, and gave birth on hands and knees also. I don't want to jinx myself, but even though all my babies have started out posterior, I have never noticed any back pain. Pain in a lot of other places, YES!, but not in my back. Let's hope that's true this time too!!

I have one new concern that never entered my head last time. After reading a book about hypnobirthing, I am feeling more inhibited about making noises during labour. I know this is ridiculous - there is no way I am going to be able to stop myself! - but the philosophy that shone through in my readings was that it should be a quiet environment, and if I am properly focused the lack of tension should reduce the pain sufficiently, etc. etc... Now, I have NOT managed to teach myself hypnosis, so I know this is not going to happen! And now I feel self-conscious about it. Can anyone talk me out of this??

I have to agree with the other ladies, you definitely look younger than 40, and you really have a beautiful mama glow. Biggrin Welcome to your lodge and I'm looking forward to following your birth!

As for the vocalizing during labour, well I've never laboured naturally before, but all I've read is that vocalizing, if it comes naturally, HELPS your body relax and is a GOOD thing! I feel silly saying this b/c you've already had one natural birth, so your body knows what to do!

Well, that was what I assumed at first, but there are anecdotes in the book about women just kind of getting quiet and pulling a baby out of themselves, then looking surprised when the doctor asked if it hurt - "Oh, doctor, was it supposed to hurt?"

You look fabulous!!

In Ina May's book she talks about making noises and how it helps to open the cervix, like deep sounds and she suggests making a horse type noise. I think if making noises is what comes natural to you then do it because it will help and an important part is to let go and give in to your body.

Well, that is encouraging because DH says I sounded like a moose last time! I have heard such good things about Ina May's book; I must see if my MW has it in her library at my appt next week...

Hmm...I make this sound when rolling over at night. Do you think that will help me progress prior to labor? Lol

And I'm a dope, Karina! I just realized you have just about a week left until your EDD! Egads! Are you ready for your little princess?

I think for many of us, the physical discomfort in the late stages conspires to make us ready to have the baby...As ready as we're going to be, anyway. Mentally, it is like preparing to go on an exotic vacation; you don't really believe any of it is going to happen until you're on the plane (if then). I really, really want to be done being pregnant but I KNOW part of me will look back and wonder what I was in such a hurry about - at least now, Anna eats whenever she is hungry and sleeps whenever and wherever...But I am also really eager to meet her - I am so surprised still that we are having a girl (I got myself prepared mentally for a third boy and no more kids), and I am sooo curious as to what she looks like and what kind of temperament she'll have, etc. Her closet is already full of dresses, I'll admit! I hope she isn't suffocated by all the frou-frou-ness I've been storing up inside myself and stifling for the sake of the boys!!!

Update at 39 weeks

It is raining babies around here (not just on pregnancy.org, but in my actual community), so my midwife asked if I'd mind another home visit on her rounds as she doesn't see herself being able to keep her clinic hours this week. Would I mind?! This is awesome! It is sooooo much more convenient when she comes to me. She brought her practicum student and ended up doing a quick internal (I felt absolutely nothing - am I so 'vast' down there from having babies that I can't feel the internals??) because they couldn't decide where the baby's head was through palpation alone. Turns out her head is so very low in my pelvis that they can't even feel it from the outside - great news!

(The MW was so smart; my kids were in the room, so she gave them each a blue rubber glove to play with from her stash and they were so busy trying to put them on that they never noticed me having my internal check!)

Baby
Heart rate: 130 bpm
Position: Head down, very low (MW said, "It's RIGHT there!")

Mom
Feeling: I have a cold with a strong cough that makes me pee my pants...But I'm less crampy than I was.
Blood pressure: 130 over 80
Measuring: 40 weeks
Internal check: Cervix still high, closed and posterior, but starting to efface
Next MW appt.: April 15 (AFTER my EDD; let's hope I get to cancel it!)

Just watched The Business of Being Born and I'm exhausted but elated - I cried through the whole thing, of course, LOL! I really wanted to see it before having the baby, and it has certainly renewed my enthusiasm for a home birth (not that it had been waning, exactly, but DH and I both admitted we can't quite believe her birth is imminent - time for a wake up call!). Great movie.

Cool! We got the DVD from Netflix a week ago (or was it 2?) but haven't found time to watch it together. Need to get on that.

How are you feeling? Do you still have that cold? I hope it's petering out by now, you'll need your strength very soon!

Great news that baby is low and your body is starting to make preparations! Did you have any warning signs with the boys, and are you feeling that way again?

DH hasn't seen the movie yet either - if I waited for a time that we could watch it together, I don't think it would happen! Just as well, I felt much better bawling at the screen by myself!

My cold is almost gone, thank you. I don't feel the same this time at all, so I don't know what to expect. Last time I felt absolutely fine and had no twinges or anything leading up to Theo's arrival, so I knew he was coming with the first contraction. This time, I've had so many contractions and cramps and twinges and whatnot on and off that I've thought she might come any day for about the last 4 weeks - and I've been wrong every time, of course, but now I'm not sure when to call the midwife...I'm just relying on the gut instinct to kick in and tell me when it is real, and hoping that it happens at a time of day that isn't too exhausting (morning would be nice, preferably after a reasonable amount of sleep, but I know this is probably asking too much as baby won't care two pins about the clock!).

This is me completely!!! With Odessa I knew from the very first contraction that she was coming, and this time I have already been experiencing contractions on and off and other "signs" that really haven't been signs at all. Hopefully we will both know when it really is for real!!! At this point I am thinking my LO is going to stay in for another couple weeks...

I watched The Business of Being Born a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it!

WTG! I can't wait to hear about this one, though with a 25min labor how long could the story be? Wink But you caught her yourself, wow! I'm as stunned as you must be.

Another due date baby, wow, your body just knows how to do this!

She is absolutely gorgeous. Congratulations!
