Hooray! I had my "38 week" appointment today at 37w 5d. Got my GBS results and I am negative! hooray, no IV!
We also talked a little about birth plan stuff. I'm really comfortable with how they do things so I will only have a hospital transfer one. The m/w even asked if I was "interested" in the eye ointment and vit K shot. I said I didn't think they were necessary and her reaction was to smile and say "ok, that's easy then". I'm so glad they are so low key!
Yay for negative GBS! And for agreeable care providers![]()
Wow, I had a big surprise today. I was just sitting down on the couch and all of a sudden a very intense contraction that was rather painful, and lasted about a minute! It came out of nowhere. With DS I started with short contractions that took hours to build before they were painful, so I was really taken aback. I thought maybe it was labor starting. I tried to relax (which was hard, since I was so surprised) and it was fine. But then it was gone and nothing else today. Fine by me! But my body is getting ready!
The baby is just saying "hey mom, still here!!! you ready yet?"![]()
All right, feeling all set now!
I met with my doula today and talked through what I see her role being as well as her suggestions. She would like to come to our house during early labor just in case I progress quickly. I'm really glad for that since the b/c wants me to wait until my contrax are 3-4 minutes apart for 2 hours...that seems like it will be pretty intense by the time we leave.
My doula is working on her certification, so she is not "official" but the b/c doesn't care who I bring and are fine with a training doula. She is a friend from my church and has helped 2 other women, and had her own baby naturally.
I asked her about comensation and she was kind of open ended, stating she's not reall professional yet. I did manage to find out that the last couple paid her $150...does that sound right to you guys? Any suggestions for what kind of compensation is appropriate?
I'm glad things are in a row for you! I'm so excited to hear about your birth![]()
I'm glad all your test results came out well with your levels and the negative GBS. Sounds like your all set to go! I'm not even sure what the going rates are for doulas. Maybe call another local doula that is certified and see what her rates are for comparison?

Hey Susan-
Yay for contractions! Sounds like your time might be sooner than later!
My doula cost $500- but she is certified. I know rates vary from place to place as well.
