Thanks for the warm welcome! Biggrin I can't beleive it's time for my lodge! Early last week I sat down and finally wrote out in detail my birth story for dd. I was surprised at how much I remember, yet some moments are a bit of a blur.

I will start with a little intro and how dh and I met:

I’m 31 and dh-Elton is turning 30 on May 22nd. We met in college. My junior year, his freshman year, we met at a party. I had friends visiting, who decided to head to a different party with a college friend of mine. Elton was very slick and said he would walk me home and it wasn’t until we were half way there that I realized my friends had my keys to get back to my dorm room (I lived in a single at the time). So Elton said I could hang out at his place until they got back (I’m sure you can just imagine where this is going…). We are hanging out in his room. I call and leave a message for my friends and tell them to call me at Elton’s. Well, a lot of time passed and Elton kept trying to put the moves on me and I was resisting. I finally called my friends again only to find out that they HAD tried to call me, but Elton had turned his ringer off , how convenient. So I left. For the next few months Elton would periodically leave me a message on the message board on my door or call, but I was very standoffish since I didn’t want to be a “basketball player’s girlfriend”. The team did not have a good reputation for being monogamous. Turns out I was right to be cautious as Elton actually already had a girlfriend at our school and I just happened to work in the library with her roommate. Freshman…

Fast forward to my senior year, his softmore year; He had broken up with his “girlfriend” and would constantly try to approach me in bars and such. Eventually a mutual friend said he thought we should get together. I was of course skeptical, but kept an open mind. For a good two months, Elton would stop by my townhouse and we would talk for hours. He never tried to make a move although he would ask. Lol He had finally proven himself to not be like the other basketball players. He was one of the few actually getting a “real” degree and was very sincere and attentive towards me. We eventually started dating but I still kept a bit of a guard up. I stayed to get my masters and we continued to date even after I graduated. By that time we realized we were in this for the long haul.

Elton asked me to marry him in May of 2003 after he graduated college. Turns out he had bought the ring the August before and waited. We were married in October 2004.

Wedding pic:

And since I always get this question...he is 6'8" and I'm 5'5". Wink

DD's birth story and some pics:

The summer after our wedding we decided to “stop trying not to get pregnant” or as my neighbor puts it “we removed the goalie”. We had heard of a number of friends that had trouble getting pregnant so we said, lets see what happens. The intention was that if nothing happened in a year we would TRY for a year and then seek help if we were unsuccessful. Lucky for us we were pregnant by month 2! Biggrin Unfortunately I was pregnant for our one year anniversary trip to Las Vegas! I had to take naps everyday just to stay up until 11pm! I was very lucky to only have mild nausea and sleepiness in the first trimester and my pregnancy was uneventful. We hope to go back to Vegas when I’m NOT pregnant. Lol

Our birth experience was not exactly how we planned. My due date was May 21st, although two u/s, one at 18 weeks and one at 28 weeks, both put the due date at May 14th. Thankfully my OB did not push the 14th as my due date. I started having NSTs every 3 days starting the week of the 14th though. I went to work on the 22nd and just felt run down so I made that my last day of work since we were in the process of moving (closing date May 31) and still had some packing to do. I don’t recommend moving when you are due to have a baby!

On May 23rd I wasn't feeling as much movement as I normally did from Mary. I got up had some orange juice and eventually started to feel her move. Elton and I continued to pack and then went to the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate his birthday and then to see the Matrix 3 (he remembers that being the movie, but I totally didn’t remember that). Throughout the entire movie I was trying to count kicks and still didn’t feel confident that there was enough movement. The theatre was right near the hospital so I decided to call the doctor and he had me go in for an NST. Mary was fine, but I had very low amniotic fluid so they decided to admit me and start induction. I was not very happy since I knew this lowered my chances of a natural birth. I recently talked to my OB who was not on-call that day and he said he would have sent me home to drink a gallon of water and come back in 24 hours. Wish I had known that…I was given the option to go home and come back to start pitocin in the morning at 7am, but the resident at the time said “she’d be thinking about me all night” so this guilted me into being worried too and I didn’t feel comfortable at the time going home since I was obviously already concerned with the lack of movement…oh the things I know now that I wish I knew then!

By the time I was set up in a room to start induction I hadn’t had anything to eat or drink since the Cheesecake Factory at around 2pm and it was now around 8:30pm. They started me on an IV which took three nurses and multiple attempts (HELLO, I’M DEHYDRATED!!). I ended up with the IV in my right hand which made wiping when I went to the bathroom near impossible and I had a really hard time sleeping! They started the induction with cytotec with the intent of doing a dose every 3 hours up to 3 times. Well, Mary's heart rate was all over the place when they started the induction so they decided not to do another dose of cytotec and waited until 7am on May 24th to start pitocin. I really feel her fluctuating heart rate had a lot to do with me being dehydrated and hungry. Once she wasn’t handling it well they also wouldn’t let me eat or drink and Elton had just walked in with food for us! (another thing to ignore this time). That was when I first really cried hard.

I had prepared for the birth using hypnobirthing techniques. The pitocin was started right at 7am. The hypnobirthing techniques and the pregnancy ball were essential to keeping the contractions consistent and manageable, which by noon were coming every minute with little relief.

By 1pm I was only 5 cm and opted for the epidural which resulted in me going to 9.5 cm within an hour. At that time they broke my water. Within that hour I kept pushing the button to increase the epi! The epi helped with the contraction pain, but now I had awful tailbone pain and pressure during each contraction. It was another 2 hours before they were set up to let me push. My OB stopped in after his office hours just after 4pm and just in time to jump in for the delivery. Mary was not handling the contractions very well and before I even started pushing my OB decided to do a forecep delivery (can we say ouch!) with about 14 people in the room (my mom counted, ha ha). The nurse, who was awesome, said I was lucky my doctor arrived as no one uses foreceps anymore and after reading a number of similar birth stories I’m pretty sure she was right since most if not all ended in c-section. The cord ended up being around her neck and she was posterior. They placed her on my belly for a short time and then the nicu staff checked her over to make sure she was okay. The nurse then placed her in my arms. Shortly after that I started to feel myself fading and unable to hold her and I yelled for someone to take her from me as I thought I was going to pass out and drop her! The nurse rushed in, checked me out and gave me some food. I’m sure it was my low blood pressure, but I honestly can’t remember. Mary was born on May 24th at 4:39pm weighing 7 lbs 10 oz and 20 inches long. Her wrists and ankles were VERY dry and even cracking so she was definitely past her due date. My placenta was in perfect condition.

Shortly after her delivery we were moved to a post partum room. The nurse wanted me to go pee so she helped me to the bathroom. While sitting on the toilet things started to fade along with sounds. I said this to the nurse and she immediately pulled the emergency cord. Another nurse rushed in and they helped me into a wheel chair to go the 5 feet to my bed. I got into bed and they asked if I would want to try a catheter. I consented because I knew I had to go bad, but my body just wouldn’t do it. The catheter wasn’t bad and I immediately filled the bag! Such relief! I’ve continued to have episodes of lightheadedness since the birth and my regular practitioner believes I may have orthostatic hypotension, which results in my blood pressure dropping if I get up too fast for example. It concerned me many times when I thought I was going to drop Mary when she was a baby, but thankfully it never came to that. I really hope to avoid the epidural this time since I believe that made my blood pressure situation worse.

I'm hoping this time with the help of hypnobabies and a doula, I'm able to have a much more natural birth.

Your story about how you and your DH met is pretty funny. Mary is very cute! I hope you are able to have a more natural birth experience this time. Everyone says induction is totally different from spontaneous labor.

I have my 36 week appt tomorrow and will update then. I don't expect it to be very eventful, although I'm anxious to see my OB's reaction when I decline an internal check. He starts them at this appt.. I am also interested in seeing how our discussion goes about my friend, that also has him as her OB, that just had an induction that ended in c-section.

Wow, your DD is a cutie! I really enjoyed your story so far....it seems we had a very similar experience with a posterior baby, low BP and the epidural making it worse!

Look forward to hearing more.....:)

Had my 36.5 week appt today. Nothing exciting. BP was 120/70 which is pretty much what's it's been from the beginning. No cervical check and he never even asked. He was going to do the GBS test, but instead we are doing it next week, at my suggestion (I just thought it would be better to have it just a tad closer to the due date). He said I was taking a chance on going into labor without the results and would have to do antibiotics  . I asked how long it takes to get the results and he said a few days and I said, I have no plans of going into labor in the next two weeks. I think the baby is cool with that too. He really was fine with it.

Yesterday I think I lost a little plug, which I mentioned to him and he jokingly said "see you may go early"! I think it's just my body prepping and getting ready, but it wasn't enough to make me think something could start soon. Dh and I went on a babymoon this past weekend and took advantage of the B&B Wink , so I was wondering if it was the extra prostiglanden Lol . If that's the case and I go to 40 weeks, we will be DTD everyday until I have the baby!

I would probably be annoyed with my positive attitude too Lol It's really kind of odd, like I'm on happy pills or something Lol

I have an appt at 4pm today where I'll get my GBS test done. I don't care if the OB does an internal check at this appt, but either way when he asks I'll let him know I prefer to hold off any other checks until I'm in labor or 40 weeks (whichever comes first). I probably won't be able to update appt the appt until tomorrow.

Hi Molly!

Your daughter is gorgeous and I have to say you looked gorgeous at your wedding and I totally love your dress and flowers Smile

I'm praying you have a beautiful natural birth this time - I understand about the induction ending in c-section thing too - I'm so glad you were able to avoid it last time, but it happened to me, and I'm glad you are using the hypnobabies - it sounds like you're on the right path. I look forward to following your story Smile

Elton sure was slick Wink great story & gorgeous wedding pic!

Our birth stories are actually pretty similar. Marissa was also due on 5/14 - born on 5/23. Induced with pitocin, fluctuating heart rate, posterior, and also used forceps.

I really hope you get the birth experience you're hoping for. SO excited for you!

Marla, I had no idea our birth stories were so similar! I hope you avoid the same scenario when you decide to have your next LO. Smile

My appt was uneventful as usual :). The OB took my BP and it was 140/70 and I said "that is really high for me". He said it could be because he used the small cuff instead of the big cuff. We continued with the appt. I got the GBS test and he did a cervical check and said "nothing happening there, but that means nothing". My perfect opportunity...I said, since it means nothing is it okay if we don't check again until I'm 40 weeks or in labor? He said sure, it's up to you, we'll wait until we're at the end. YEAH! No battle!! Smile This appt also made it clear as to why I don't want internal checks, it was a bit of a let down to know NOTHING was happening. I know I was 2cm for a while with dd, but I don't know at what week that started. I have always assumed I'd go late (hence, why I joined the June BB not the May BB Wink ), but I started getting the feeling I'd go before my due date. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about having this baby this weekend when I have a house full of people for dd and dh's birthday party!

Back to the BP, the OB took my BP again with the larger cuff and it was back to it's normal 110/70. The only time my BP has gone above 120 for the top number was when I had a UTI and another time when I had an ovarian cyst that burst, so whenever it's above 120/70 I usually ask for a retake or check to see if anything else may be going on. Good thing all is well. With my newly swollen feet I wanted to be sure my BP was normal.

Baby is head down, but high. The OB said he would have expected the baby to be lower, but it was no big deal. I wasn't surprised to hear that this LO is high because occassionally I can tell that he/she's "floated" up to almost a transverse position. I usually feel the hiccups down low, but sometimes I'll feel them on my left side just above my left hip bone.

That's all for now Smile

I didn't know a change of cuff could make such a difference with the BP. Huh, maybe that's why mine has been slightly higher at the last few appointments.

I like your OB. He seems really laid back and reasonable. Hopefully he's just a reasonable during labor, too!

I didn't realize it either, but when I mentioned it to my mom who's a nurse she agreed that it made sense. I have pretty big upper arms too.

My OB is very laid back and easy going. I think he's used to my questions by now so it makes me feel so much more confident about asking them. My friend jokingly said to me "he's picking his battles with you" Lol Probably very true at this point since I've asked him more questions then ever before.

I bought brownie mix to make brownies for the hospital staff over the weekend. I want to win them over before I have to argue anything Wink

Yay for a good appt! Your OB sounds a lot like mine:-) I ran into the blood pressure cuff issue last pregnancy too. There was a big difference! I'm kinda in between cuffs so the last couple months they ended up taking it with and recording both.

Near the end my OB thought Ethan was breech but he was just really high too. Is the heartburn killing you? Felt like Ethan was keeping all my stomach acid at my throat all the time! Hope you're not having the same issues with that:-)

Sounds like a good appt, glad your BP is normal. I always felt I would go into labor either a couple days before or after my EDD. It happened to be a couple days before, so instincts are usually right.

Molly--sorry, with all the crazyness of the births this weekend, your lodge got a little lost!

Sounds like you had a good appointment. Awesome that your OB was so agreeable about not doing the routine cervical checks. Sending you GBS negative vibes.

How is your DD doing with the idea of a new baby coming?

I was so shocked after not being online all weekend to find 4 mommas had their babies on Friday!!
No worries about my lodge, since I have nothing to report Wink

We had a birthday party for dh and dd yesterday and it was a big hit Biggrin . DD seems okay about a baby coming soon. She is spending A LOT more time with dh though which I think is sweet. I think she'll love helping out with the new baby, but will of course have some meltdowns of jealousy.

Baby seems to have dropped a bit after all my running around and being on my feet most of the day yesterday. I can feel it in my bladder and pelvic area and the distance between my chest and my belly seems to have lengthened. My SIL actually commented on the change tonight. This has suddenly made reality hit that this birth really could happen at anytime. I hope I'm really ready!

I'll be posting an update on Tuesday. I have an OB appt tomorrow followed by a 30 minute massage :D, but probably won't get back online until Tuesday.

I slept horrible Sunday night, which is so unusual for me since I tend to sleep very soundly. The baby was pushing hard with it's feet on my upper right side and his/her head was firmly pressuring my left pelvic area. My left pelvis hurt so intensly. I have a hard time fully describing the pain, but I could not sleep through it (believe me, I tried). It wasn't ligament pain, it was too constant to be contractions, similar to nerve pain but more like the pain of putting heavy pressure on an already existing bruise. I couldn't sleep on my left side and even when I slept on my right I could still feel the pressure/pain, just slightly less intense. I tried some of my hypnobabies techniques, but couldn't find my ipod to play some of the relaxation CDs that may have helped. I didn't have pain when I walked, went to the bathroom, or got on my hands and knees (all of those positions felt good). It was just when I layed down. I kind of assume it was the baby trying to adjust to the new low position in my pelvis.

What perfect timing for my massage therapy appt! The woman specializes in prenatal massage and even did some techniques for inducing labor (which of course only work if my body is actually ready). She also helped loosen the muscles on my left side that were probably causing the pain and I was back to sleeping soundly last night, thank God!

If I get any more pain issues I won't hesitate to either go back to the woman I saw today or go to my friend who also does massage therapy. My sister will be around next week and she is a physical therapist and may also have some helpful things for me.

My appt was uneventful, bp 110/60 and GBS test came back negative. Yahoo

No internal check, which seemed to confuse the OB's nurse, but after the appt he said "we'll do an internal next week since we'll be near the end". So much for it being up to me , but I'll pick my battles and an internal isn't the end of the world. It does make me wonder what else he has for an agenda. It came off as though he were saying, you had your fun now lets get back to my routine. I talked to my doula about it and she agreed with my interpretation. Just one more thing for us to prepare for. I asked him if it seemed like the baby dropped like I thought and he said he couldn't feel the baby's head so he felt it must be deep in my pelvis. YEAH! I wasn't imagining it :D.

So glad to hear the massage helped with the pain you were having! Yay for GBS negative and for baby dropping! Some OB's can be really two-faced--they tell you what you want to hear, but then usually resort to their routine way of doing things. I'm glad you have a doula to guide you through dealing with him during labor.

I get whatever OB is on call the day the baby decides to come, so in a way I've been preparing for the need to speak up to get what I want whether it's my OB or a stranger. Wink With dd I saw a Resident the night I was admitted, then I don't think I saw another OB/Resident until I was 9.5 cm and just about ready to push (20 hours between visits  ). As long as I have a good nurse I should be good to go!

So far I've been sleeping great since my massage on Monday. Biggrin Last night I was up a bit more than usual, but still got a good night's sleep. I keep falling "asleep" listening to my hypnobabies. I can't seem to stay even somewhat conscience while listening to them, with the exception of the Joyful birth affirmations track since I listen to that while I'm doing house work. Hopefully that's a good sign! Biggrin

Glad to hear you're sleeping well, I do that with my Hypnobabies all the time. I told DH he should try listening to it, he's a horrible sleeper and I figure it couldn't hurt any. Biggrin

Do you think your babies might share a birthday?

If you get a nurse you don't like, you can always send your DH or doula to ask the head nurse for a different one. Set-ups like yours (where you have absolutely no idea who will be catching your baby, and more likely than not it will be a stranger), are the ones where doulas are the most needed--I'm glad you have one.

I don't "think" that will happen but you never know. I would prefer this baby to wait until closer to the due date or after since we have friends in from out of town this weekend and a cookout I want to make it too! Biggrin

That's the plan! I feel so ready and confident that I have no problem speaking up for what I want. I hope I don't have to, but I'm prepared to fight to get the birth experience I want. I already told dh that if I don't like what I'm hearing from the hospital staff that I'm just going to turn up my headphones and let him and the doula tell them what I want. Sorry I haven't been keeping up with your lodge (I've barely been keeping up with mine ;))...

It sounds as though you are ready for this baby to arrive! WTG with keeping in your "bubble of peace" - do you think that DH will be able to keep strong and assertive during your labour?
