Hi Ladies!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!! I appreciate the support -- time has sure flown by ~ anyway, here is an intro on me:

My name is Christa, I'm 36 years old and have been married to my wonderful DH, Craig (43) since August 2005. I work full time outside the home and will be working up until April 9 (unless baby comes sooner).

In October 2006 we were blessed with our beautiful DD Kendall Evelyn. Kendall arrived very healthy, right on schedule (2 days before EDD) after a difficult pregnancy and some what complicated birth; she weighed 6 lbs, 13oz and was 19.5 inches long. I ended up with an epidural since she was in distress (she had the cord around her arm and torso and was skipping heart beats with the contractions) and they were debating doing a c-section. I didn't end up with a c-section (which I'm grateful about), but she was delivered with the assistance of a vacuum which resulted in a severe tear for me.

This pregnancy has been so much easier and uncomplicated (and has flown by compared to DD)! I'm really hoping/aiming for a natural child birth (that was the plan the first time). I will be delivering at the hospital, but have already discussed in detail my birth plan with the OB and have gotten buy-in/agreement on my preferences! I've been studying the hypno-babies program (but I fall asleep alot during the sessions).

If I had to guess, I would say this baby will arrive early -- I've been experiencing lots of pressure, CM discharge, cramping, and braxton hicks. My internal exams start this week, so I'll see if all this is making anything happen yet! Oh, and this baby is a surprise with regards to gender, just like DD was!

I plan to breastfeed this baby and didn't experience any issues while BF DD, so I hope that trend continues as well. In fact, DD will still nurse on occassion, but I've been cutting her back some just because it causes so many contractions. I have the book adventures in tandem nursing and may give that a try; I'm trying to allow for a DD lead weaning versus forcing the issue.

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell -- if you want more details on this pregnancy, you can check out the link to my tot-site in my siggy! If you just want to know more about me, post away!

Thanks again, Christa

Sure -- I can post some later on. There are few on my tot-site (link in siggy), but I will see if I can get DH to take a few updated belly shots.

Working on it as best we can with a 2-1/2 year old that doesn't totally get it. She has been "helping" prepare the clothes and equipment, we have read several "big sister" type stories, and have presents for her when the new baby comes -- for the hospital and also the day we come home. We have also talked to her about "sharing" Mommy with the baby and have told her the baby will be here soon. She tells us the baby is coming from the store!

Daddy has been spending more time with her and doing fun stuff with her -- going to the store, swimming at the YMCA, taking her to gymnastics, etc. He plans to continue once the new baby is born, so that should help too. In general, she LOVES babies and is very nurturing. We hope it continues once she has one in her own home!

So, just realized I didn't post an update after my appointment last week (36.5 weeks):

Everything is progressing nicely!

  • Blood pressure was 100/60 and urine test came back fine
  • I gained almost 2 pds since last week, so almost 30 total now
  • Fundal Height is measuring about 34.5 (still 2 weeks behind, but again we were told this just isn't a huge baby)
  • Babies heart beat was in the mid 140's to low 150's
  • Baby is head down!!
  • AND, cervix is about 30% effaced, very soft and about a fingertip dilated. For comparison purposes, I wasn't at all soft/effaced at my 37/38 week appointment with Kendall, but had progressed to about 50% and soft (no dilation) at the appointment (a week later) just 8 days prior to delivery of Kendall. I'm guessing this baby will be a bit early, but who knows!
  • Next appointment is 4/1/09
  • I also had lots of cramping and spotting after the cervical check -- it lasted about 3 days. She said my cervix is posterior and had to really push to feel it.

So, overall, pretty boring appointment this week; but the exciting news is that baby furniture has arrived and I can finish nesting!

38 week Appointment update:

  • gained 2 pds; makes it about 32 total
  • 116/70 Blood pressure; urine checked out fine
  • Group B Strep test was negative
  • Fundal Height measured at 36 weeks
  • Heart beat was in the 140's
  • Based on feel alone, they estimate the baby to be about 6pds right now
  • 30% effaced, soft and 1 cm dilated. But, still posterior cervix so labor isn't likely to happen until at least 1 more week.
  • Next appointment is 4/7/09

Link to see the baby gear and the room!!

Since the furniture arrived last Wednesday, we tried to finish up the baby room this weekend. It still needs some little touches, but is essentially complete. There is a link below to see the baby gear and the room. This is just the gender neutral stuff. Also, not pictured is the car seat that matches the stroller, the new Graco double stroller we bought and the exersaucer and bumbo for when the baby is older. Other than that, it's essentially everything!

Very cute! I like the sun/moon/stars. Looks like you're all ready to walk a newborn into that room. And the closet is so organized! Well... the whole room is so organized... tell me the rest of your house isn't like that? haha

It depends on the day! Some days it's very organized and others not so much! The living room has been taken over my toys, so I'm trying to find a reasonably priced solution to organizing it all -- but, the stuff I love and would like to use is super expensive! We are watching our spending right now because of the economy, DH's job isn't that stable (company has already had 2 rounds of cuts) and the with the new baby coming. So, it's a project likely on hold.

AND, You should the storage room right now! Oh my goodness, you can barely walk in there! DH is letting me get another storage / shelving unit and that will help, but really, keeping all the baby stuff really adds up fast! Since we don't know whether this is a boy or girl and aren't sure if we are "done" after this, I'm trying to get things in order down there. But, it's a lot of work! I've been storing all the old clothes in those vacuum seal bags. But, even then, it takes up space!

It's terrible trying to store baby clothes. I think we're going to have another kiddo or two but I'm so tempted to just get rid of all the too-small clothing and start fresh when/if we have another.

Are you still working?

Yes, I'm working! My last day is Thursday, April 9. Then my daycare lady (who is planning to keep Kendall while I'm in labor) is out of town April 9-13 (her brother passed away recently); so, I'm hoping baby stays put until at least April 14!! Please send me lots of no-labor vibes until then!!:p

Hi Ladies:

So, I had my 38-3/7 week appointment today:

  • 124/80 blood pressure (okay, but up for me)
  • Urine test was fine
  • Gained about 1-1.5 pds (total now is about 33-34 pds)
  • FH measured at 36-1/2 weeks (up about 1/2 week from last appointment)
  • Heart Beat was in the 140's (same as last time)
  • Baby weight is estimated at about 6.5pds
  • Cervix is 1.5-2 cm (changed from 1cm), 50% effaced (changed from 30%), but still high and posterior
  • Baby is head down but floating at about -3 station
  • They did a stress test since I've had decreased movement and everything checked out fine.

Quentin Vincent M. Birth Story
4-14-09 ~ 7 lbs, 1oz ~ 19 inches
35.5cm Head Circumference
Apgars 9 & 9
Born at 39 weeks + 3 days
Born 18 minutes after arriving at the hospital fully dilated; completely natural childbirth

April 13th - 9 p.m.
After stopping on Saturday (April 11), contractions have started again, but they aren't regular at all. They come and go and last for about 30 minutes at a time, but then stop for hours. The more walking Christa does the more frequently they come. We are off to bed and just playing the waiting game.

April 14th - 9 a.m.
After going to bed, the contractions stopped all together. This morning, they started up again about 9 a.m. Christa is home alone - Kendall is at daycare and Craig is at work. She has been timing the contractions, but they don't have any consistent pattern and so far, they aren't painful, just a bit uncomfortable. Christa is working on getting a few things done around the house just in case this is it. The walking is causing lots of pressure and making the contractions come closer together.

April 14th - 11 a.m.
Time to call Craig! The contractions are still highly irregular, but after having two in a row that resembled contractions Christa had while in labor with Kendall (low in the pelvis and shooting down her thighs), she decided to call Craig. Right now, the contractions are about 10-15 minutes apart with a few more frequent and a few less frequent; still no consistent pattern as far as timing apart or duration of the contractions. They are lasting about 30 seconds to a minute each.

April 14th - 11:45 a.m.
Craig is home! The contractions are now getting painful and about 5 minutes apart. We are heading into the hospital now! On the way to the hospital, we called daycare and the OB office. The OB office tried to tell Craig that we were coming in too soon -- obviously he wasn't talking to one of Christa's OB's who warned us that labor with Kendall was fast (5-6 hours) and this time would go even quicker! We decided to ignore the woman on the phone and headed into the hospital anyway!

April 14th - 12:20 p.m.
We have arrived at the hospital -- it took forever because of lunch hour traffic (normally a 20 minute drive)! Christa's contractions are now about 1 minute apart and VERY painful. They take Christa by wheel chair up to labor & delivery. After signing in, they wheel her into a room and ask if she can go to the bathroom and change into a gown -- Christa's response is "No", so they tell her to lie down and one of the nurses checks her. She is fully dilated and the baby is at 0 station. From here, the fun starts -- the room fills with nurses who are preparing the room and Christa for delivery and trying to find her doctor!

April 14th - 12:30 p.m.
Christa's water breaks on it's own. The fluid is clear. The nurses have located another doctor and tell Christa to start pushing.

April 14th - 12:35 p.m.
Roughly at this time, Christa's doctor arrives. He asks if he has time to change and the nurses tell him no. He thought they were kidding and asks "Seriously?" They say "Seriously", he takes one look and says "O.K."

April 14th - 12:38 p.m.
Quentin Vincent arrives!! The doctor announces that it's a boy and Craig gets to cut the cord. Quentin weighed in at 7 lbs, 1 oz and 19 inches long. Head circumference was 35.5 cm. His apgars were 9 & 9!! The nurses joked with Craig that if we have any more children, he better take a birthing class just in case Christa delivers at home! They also commented on his perfectly round head - said it never had time to "mold".

Christa tore (2nd degree) and required stitches -- she is sore, but recovering. Quentin is nursing like a champ and adjusting to being in the world. His hospital discharge weight on 4-16 was 6lbs, 10oz. At his follow-up on 4-18 (his due date), he was 6lbs, 14oz and had already gained an inch -- 20 inches.
