    Default 2nd birth timeline

This is slightly off topic, but I'm curious and thinking about it:

My first was born at 38weeks. I was thinking the 2nd might follow suit but a friend told me that is not necessarily the case, that I'm just as likely to go over 40weeks the 2nd time. Does anyone know if that is the case? Do deliveries vary a lot on the timetable or do they tend to follow a pattern?

my first was born at 39 w 3 d and my second at 39 w 5 d, so mine have been similar, but my mom had her 1st at 40 w, 2nd at 38 w and a few days and her 3rd and 4th were both close to 42 weekos

I know there have been a few lodges on this board where a mom expected to go at 38 w because of a first birth being at that time, and they went longer. It's better to not expect to go early.

Most of my friends and family were earlier with their second one but thats totally anecdotal so take it for what its worth. My personal theory is they always come when you least expect them (DS came on his due date and I was planning to wait at least another week), so if you would prefer to go early be totally unprepared

My first was born at 39 weeks and my second was induced closer to 42 weeks... so it can happen that way. I certainly didn't expect to go so long with my second - but I blame catching influenza right at the end for why I went overdue. I am hoping to go a little sooner with this one

It can go in either direction!
My second was a week earlier than my first. (42 and 41 weeks)

DD's first was a couple of weeks early and her second was born on her due date exactly!

Good question, I have been wondering the same. I had DD at 39 weeks and I'm wondering what will happen this time (more like driving myself crazy with what will happen lol).

DS was born at 38 weeks and I'm not sure with this one. I'm thinking it could go either way though.

My friend had her 1st at 37 weeks and her 2nd just recently came at 41 weeks.

Good to know. I guess I need to prepare myself for a long pregnancy

The reserach says that on average a mother is consistent within herself, and that, on average, a second is usually 3-5 days earlier than the first. However, that is the law of averages, not individuals.

Personally, DS (1st) was born at 38 weeks, and DD was born at 40wks... Just goes to show you never know.
