Question Can someone help me out? When do I worry??

I've been having pretty regular contrax since about 17 weeks. Sometimes regularly around 10 min apart for hours or days. My mw has checked my cervix twice since then and both times there has been no dialation. Last check was 2 days ago at my 34 week appt. I am 50% effaced - not sure what that means in terms of progression...

She did say at my last appt that baby is sitting super low and she's assuming that the contrax are my uterus just trying to hold her up. Basically I was told not to walk around too much and not to leave town.

I spent the entire day yesterday pretty much just laying around. I made lunch and dinner - but other than that I was sitting or lying. Around 8pm I started getting pretty strong contrax that I had to breathe through - and this time they had definite peaks - sometimes peaking and then peaking a little stronger again before releasing. They were getting so strong I had to breathe through them and turn off the tv to concentrate. I started timing them and they were about 3 - 5 min apart. I got in the bath tub with a cloth over my belly for about 20 - 30 min with no change. I got back on the couch trying to ignore them and started timing again. Now they were 2 - 4 min apart. At 10:30p DH made me get back in the bath again.

I wasn't sure what to do because I've been having BH forever - and I knew these were stronger and closer together but they were never very long - mostly 30 sec - 1 min, but averaging under 40 sec. I was a little worried because I thought I might need some steriod shots for baby's lungs if I really was in labor but something told me that I wasn't. And then I was just thinking - maybe I'm in denial - am I doing the right thing by not calling anyone??

When I got out of the bath I just got in bed and decided to try to fall asleep. I slept all night with only a few contrax waking me up. Now they are back to about every 10 - 20 or 30 min but still are pretty strong with real peaks - not even all the way through like my previous BH have been.

So what do you think? Should I have gone in last night? At what point do I worry? I mean if I was term I wouldn't have changed anything - it's just that I'm only 34 weeks and don't want to put my baby at risk. btw - never had any mucus or blood - although I never lost my plug or had any blood at all in early labor with DS either...

Thanks for your thoughts ladies - and sorry for the long post!!

It is always hard to say what to do in those situations.

I'm a mat nurse and if you had called up to the ward telling me this. I probably would have told you to come in and get checked, just because you're still a bit early.

What was your first birth like? Would you say overall are the contractions are getting much worse? Any signs of a bladder infection? Those can actually cause preterm labor.

Given the weeks of BH you've been having, you might be facing a long, drawn out prodromal labor pattern which is tough. All ways waiting and trying to figure out if this is "it".

Let us know what happens and hope your little girl stays put a while longer!

I'd call your MW and talk with her. That is what she is there for.

First birth started about the same but I'm pretty sure the contrax were lasting longer - and I had "this feeling" that it was real labor. Can't describe it but I just "felt" like it wasn't the real thing the other night when I posted. Also - first labor my water broke within about 5 hours of feeling that way.

I don't have any signs of a bladder infection - don't think that's it - also I've been pretty good about my water intake.

I think you're right about the prodromal labor. Since that night all my contrax have been strong and peaking - much different than my BH. They've been staying pretty far apart though - at least 10 min, but no less than 1 an hour.

With my mom's second pregnancy, she did pretty heavy prodromal laboring for a couple of weeks. At her 38 week check up she was 8 cm and ended up driving straight to the hospital and pushing him out! Here's hoping

I will keep you all posted. I'm sure I'm going to go early with this one and I'm probably just gearing up - but it will most likely be weeks before it's the real thing.

At least I'll be 35 weeks in a few days and then I won't have to worry about getting to the hospital early for the sake of the baby right??

If it makes you feel any better, I experienced what you're describing with both my kiddos. With my last preg, (DS), I dilated to 4cm and then stayed there for 4 weeks... I definitely know the contrax you're talking about. But when productive labour started with him, it felt DIFFERENT... just like you're saying - I knew. And it was REALLY fast. Only 1.5 hours from first 'real' contrax to his birth.

All women experience labor differently, even baby to baby for the same woman. I had tons of regular BH starting around 20 weeks but that first real one was markedly different. Granted, my water had broken so there was no doubt in my mind that baby was on her way . I called my MW once at about 32 weeks when my BH were about 8 minutes apart and she gave me the usual, rest up/drink water/come in if you feel like you have to. It's easy to call and talk to the MW and the call alone is sometimes enough to calm your mind. If you went in and nothing happened it wouldn't change your plans for your birth. An experienced MW can probably just take a look at you and tell whether or not baby is imminent.

I hope these contractions are getting you ready for a super easy birth! Stay put for a few more weeks little lady!

Same as Erin - with DS I had so many BH's - uncomfortable that I had to stop and breathe through. But the *instant* I felt the first "real" contraction, I just knew. The weird thing is when labor started, the contractions did not hurt or was an uncomfortable as my BH's were! But I still knew.

I'd still call your MW just to let her know. I had an evening of contractions (BH's now looking back on it) around 36 weeks that made me nervous, but nothing consistent again until labor started.
