home birth kit?

Hi all

I'm Allie, and I'm around some but due to my employer working me to the bone in the last 6 months I haven't been able to participate as much as I would have liked. Only 2 working days to go though Biggrin

Anyway. I was jipped of a home birth my last pregnancy due to Cholestasis (I had a brief lodge before I was induced at 37 weeks) and this time I've been soooo lucky to avoid it, so I am now 38.5 weeks and got my home birth green light a week and a half ago. YAY!!! This is baby #3 so I've probably been way more relaxed and less prepared than I was with the other two, but since my EDD is just around the corner, I was thinking I should probably get a few things together for the birth.

Soooo, what's in your home birth kit? I know they sell a basic kit at my MW for what it costs them to put together, but just wondering what you would consider a necessity?

Thanks so much and if this home birth works out, you can bet your sweet butt I'll be posting my story and tons of pics Biggrin (eeeekkk, getting sooo excited)

Would you like me to start a lodge for you?

I got the birth kit from my midwife and honestly used basically everything that was in it. I think the only thing that wasn't used was the olive oil that came in it and a few of the diapers oh and a few of the chux pads. I would try to remember the site she uses and copy the list off of it for you. Each midwife uses each item differently though and most only make you get the stuff they know they will use.

Thank you so much, but I don't think I'd have the time to keep up with a lodge this time around. My only real computer time was at work and tomorrow is my last day Smile I do enjoy reading the others though.

I'll speak with my MW tonight and see what she recommends as well.

I have:

20+ Underpads (chux pads)
Depends (adult diapers - they were AMAZING during labour and post partum)
Overnight pads
a couple big black garbage bags
2 drop sheets (to protect the carpeting in my bedroom)
Witch hazel
Arnica
Oil for perineum massage
Advil/Tylenol
Stool Softener
Epsom Salts
Peri Bottle
Hot water bottle
I've already got a mattress protector on my bed

... I'm sure there's more, but my kit is upstairs and I'm WAY too lazy to walk up those stairs right now hahaha

The list on the pp sounds about right. My birth kit for ds1 did not include depends, hot water bottle, or epsom salts. It did include an herbal sitz bath, though, and a bulb syrhynge (sp?) for baby, a peri bottle, and iodine. For perineal massage, you might also consider lanolin instead of oil. A mw friend of mine learned about that when she spent time working among the Bedouin, and she found that it worked much better than other oils, because it is so thick. If you aren't allergic to it, you can get it in a tube from Lansinoh, which sells it as a nipple cream for nursing.

I would also recommend (although this is hardly part of a kit), picking up a set of sheets and some towels at the thrift store. Put the towels and then the sheets on your bed OVER your regular sheets. Sometimes stuff doesn't make it onto the chux pads. Once baby arrives, the mw can just strip the top sheets and towels off the bed while you clean up, and then you and baby can get comfortable.

Excellent ladies, thank you so much. I got a basic kit from my MW last night, it has the garbage bags, chux pads, newbie hat, peri bottle, overnight pads and a few other things that I can't remember, but I'll definitely look into the other things noted.

What is Anti Cramp Tincture? does that have to do with after pains? I got them brutally with both boys and as legend says it gets worse with every pregnancy lol. I'm sure I'm going to want to climb the walls with this one.

I'm also extremely excited. My old boss is lending me their birth pool, all I have to do is grab a liner for it. I'm finally going to get my water birth YAY!!

Thanks for all the suggestions Smile

Yes the anti cramp tincture is to help with the after pains. IT IS AWESOME!!!! lol. I loved it! I still have it and use it for my monthly cramps. It is super nasty and you want to take it with juice. But it works great!

Here is the link to the tincture

The only thing I would add is a bottle of peroxide. It is the best thing for cleaning up any drips of blood on carpet, bed, DH's pants. It kind of eats away the blood & doesn't damage the material.

I have heard that liquid calcium can also help with after pains, but I've never tried it. However, do have a bucket or some such around after your birth. With my second, the after pains made me puke every time I tried to nurse for the first day. It was not fun having to try to hold it until someone could get me a bag Sad You may also want to discuss those pains with your mw. The shot of pit that is often given after birth is supposed to help those pains be more effective. You may want to ask your mw her policy on that and if she can start you off with a very small dose.

Add vitamin C to the liquid calcium prenatally, my MW swears it helps curb engorgement.

Maybe this was already mentioned and I just didn't see it but one thing we also had was an ice cream bucket for the placenta. I also had a couple of clearanced (ugly) vinyl table clothes that we put under the pool so it would protect the carpet and for me to step out on. DH ended up having to run downstairs to get a large stock pot during labor because he put warm water in the pool (which he was supposed to do) but I ended up sweating so bad during labor (which I should've known I'd do as I always sweat buckets during hard labor) that I demanded he get the warm water out of the pool so I could keep the hose on and keep cold water flowing over me. That was really the only thing that wasn't on our "list" that we ended up needing. Well, we also needed alcohol and a knife to cut the cord but that was only because my mw didn't make the birth so we ended up doing a bit more than we thought we'd have to.

I'm so excited for you Allie!!!! My mw's assistant was praying for us when they were on their way and we all realized I was going wayyyyy too fast for them to make it. She prayed I would have the strength, wisdom and guidance to have the exact birth I wanted. I'll pray for those same things for you Smile Her praying worked because I did get exactly what she asked for!

That's a good note about the placenta! We didn't think about that before ds1, and found ourselves scrambling at the end for something to put it in. Luckily we had an empty KFC bucket hanging around.

Krista, I see that yours contains medical supplies but Alison's doesn't. Does your MW have a longer drive and so she prefers you have things on hand in case baby arrives before she does?
