I hate my Dr! (vent)
So a little background, I usually love my family Dr, but we have had some issues since I got pregnant. He didn't believe my dates and insisted that I get a "Dating ultrasound" which annoyed me, then at our last appointment he pushed me into getting my 2 hour glucose test done, even though I failed the 1 hour, have a history of GD with both my other pregnancies, and have been testing my blood and obviously have it! I was not happy about it, but finally got the test to get him off my back. Luckily, for me, I was already referred to the diabetes clinic by another Doc while he was out of town.
So this appointment he agrees that I have GD (DUH!) and then proceeded to tell me that I will need to be induced!!!!!! What!!!! I have never needed to be induced! At this point, my sugars are totally diet controlled and where for both my other pregnancies! I can see in 3 months if I lose control of them talking about getting induced, but at this point........I don't think so! He back pedaled when I stated that had never needed to be done before, and said that it was a 'good possibility' that I would need to be induced, but not for sure. I am anticipating a fight in our future!
The worse part is that I cant switch Drs. I live in a smallish northern town and the health board here wont let you switch unless the new Dr sends them a form stating they will take you, but no Drs will do that because they get in trouble if they 'steal' too many patients from other Drs.
My Dr is sending me for a consult with the OB though, who I fought against seeing my last pregnancy as he is has a pretty high c-sec rate, but I am almost hoping that he will take me as a patient just to get away from the Dr I have now! I do not trust this man to be making decisions about my birth while I am in labor. And DH would just go along with anything the Dr wants.........Argh! I am so frustrated!
Sorry, I just had to get that out :)
What? Really? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard! Not even worth trying, it's that unthinkable?

Are you in Canada? That practice would be illegal in the States. You have the right to switch doctors at any time for any reason, as long as your insurance covers them or you're willing to pay out-of-pocket. If you don't like this guy and you don't like the OB, go to someone else. Screw the Health Board. Tell them you just now realized you're pregnant, LOL. ;)
(((((HUGS))))) when are doctors going to realize we don't need stress when we're pregnant and stop giving it to us???
I am in Canada! Its not just about being pregnant though, when you move to town, you need to pick a Dr and then you are not allowed to change again. They are pretty stricked about it. We actually went about 4 months without a Dr when our Dr retired and the replacement wasn't here yet, and they still wouldnt let anybody move practices. I liked my old Dr so much better, I was at least able to do some research and choose her, while I was forced to stay with this Dr :)
At least when I talked to DH he totally backed me up and was all 'what are they gonna do, force you to go to the hospital and get induced?' So I think he will back me up on making my own decisions, to a point at least. He also knows most of the Drs, and pointed out that our Dr has a very common take on birth for our area. So changing probably wouldnt make a difference anyways.
Ugh. So sorry! At least if DH is on your side and you know your rights you have a good chance of avoiding an unnecessary induction. So sorry you have to even worry about it though!
And I think I hate your town's medical board, no offense. ;)
Your doctor must be related to the one I saw at the beginning of my pregnancy. So frustrating. I hope everything continues to go well with your pregnancy & this doctor doesn't hassle you much more.
Yes, it is great DH is supportive. And he's right. You can't be induced if you don't show up!
Since it sounds like your hands are very tied on this have you considered hiring a doula to help you get the best care and to help your DH stand up for your wants? Not sure if a midwife will take you on with GD but if so that could also be a better option.
Good luck, I can't imagine the logic behind this practice.
you live in a smallish Northern town - That may be why you can't switch. I live in Canada and went through 13 dr's until I found one that i meshed well with (in 5 years - not for pregnancy though) ...small northern towns are another story though.
How many Dr's are in your town? usually with small towns there is a limited number of Dr's available to the public.
I would reccommend telling your Dr your concerns. If he puts up an arguement, ask him how egotistical he is, not to listen to the wishes of his patient.
He may also be covering his bases. When I was pregnant, I was sent to a medical condition during pregnancy specialist becaus of my history of seizures, even though I had been seizure free for 3 years. It was a precaution, in case I had one during or after pregnancy.
He may only be sending you, to cover his bases, and testing you to ensure he has those results in your file.(Instead of just taking your word for it - many patients lie to their Dr's _ not saying you are, but he does have to have the information on file) Also, Most people who fail the 1 hour test are sent to the 2 hour test to ensure there wasn't a false positive - which is very comman. And because you had GD in previous pregnancies, it doesn't gaurentee you'll have it in subsequent ones.
If you go in anticipating a fight, you will have one. Discuss your concerns and why they are concerns. You stated that you usually love your Dr...could it be the horomones changing how you perceive the information he gives you? (I ask that, as I watch my pregnant sister (Who is usually the kindest person in the world) turn into an angry person (and percieve things said to her in the completely wrong way) because of her horomones - something she can't control). Take another person with you when you go talk to him, that way you will know for sure why he thinks you most likely will hav eto be induced.
Good luck - If you are still not happy with him, then tell him you want to switch Dr's. Then make an appointment with another Dr.
According to the OB I need to be induced too, just because I have GD. No other reason. In fact, he stated that he doubted I would have any problems with my GD, as I never have before. I would be OK with it if the conversation had gone more along the lines of "if your sugars get too high" or " if there is a problem with the twice a week NST's", but it isnt. It is flat out that I need to be induced, which is ridiculous IMO. My last pregnancy I didnt have a single test for GD, it was assumed that since I couldnt control my sugars I had it, didnt have a single NST, and there was no mention at all of inducing me. I actually havent said anything to them yet about refusing to be induced, but i will be mentioning it next appointment. I dont really see any point in making it an issue right now as anything could happen in the next 10 weeks, but I have been told that I should say something now so that the Dr has a heads up on where my head is.
I am also willing to go do all there stupid tests at this point, just so they will stay off my back, not that I would show up for an induction anyways :) I have a feeling thought that my DH's resolve will falter the closer we get to the day of, so it will be nice to have results that show baby is healthy, and my body is still doing what it should.
BTW, the biggest risk with GD is that (if sugars are not well controlled) the placenta can fail and baby be stillborn. However, if sugars are controlled that risk goes down to about normal. This is there concern......because apparently I would rather lie about my numbers and look good, then have a healthy baby.
