Marite

Marite, what a gorgeous halo in Benita's photo! As a garden addict, this really appeals to me! :neonflower:

I know you are leaving soon for Angola. Will you have internet access and continue sharing your further adventures? I'd enjoy that!

It is a really beautiful picture. The flowers next to her beautiful sleeping baby face are a lovely image.

Thanks everyone! That picture was taken the weekend we celebrated the summer solstice. We're Latvian (well, I guess Beni is only 1/2 Latvian, as my husband is Dutch Australian), and the summer solstice is one of the year's biggest celebrations, if not the biggest. All women wear wreaths of flowers on that night.

Here's all three of us- and me wearing my wreath too...

The bad thing about this photo is that the wreaths are definitely meant to sit square across the head, not at a tilt like both of ours are in this photo! Oops!

I've been admiring your beautiful picture as well! What a great picture to remember her first summer solstice!

Here's my Dad and my Step-mom. Usually you make wreaths out of wildflowers, but my step-mom cheated and used store-bought. My Dad is wearing a wreath made of oak leaves, which is traditional for the men- especially men named Janis (pronounced Yanis), because it's their names day.

Oh and yes, I will have internet access in Angola (though of course not as good as here!), so I will still be around! Smile

I'd love it if you shared a bit about the area where you live there! I spent a couple of years in Nigeria and would have loved the experience even more (I presume!) if I'd had children there at the time. We taught in remote schools, so the hospital access was not very good, traffic was a nightmare...so maybe it would not have been as great an experience as I like to think.

Love the pictures my friend just, well probably not "just", but recently posted pictures on her FB of the same event Smile Everyone was wearing flower wreaths.

She is full blood Latvian, she was my roommate in college- it always cracked me up when she would call her grandma and talk in native tongue and I had no clue the things she was saying and we sit in our dorm room and if her grandma said something funny she'd send me an IM message telling me what she said haha!! I remember her talking about all the festivals and camps. She even taught the language on the weekends at a private school kind of thing.

Pamela- my guess is I know your friend. Smile Especially if she's active in Latvian circles.

My friends always laughed when I talked on the phone to any of my family members as well... especially if I randomly threw in words in English. My family is 100% latvian too- so we all spoke Latvian at home.
