    Default Mastitis while pregnant?

I know it's rare but not impossible to get mastitis while pregnant. Since yesterday the upper left quadrant of my right breast has been really really sore and swollen. Doesn't feel hot though or red, and I don't have a fever. It gets worse when I raise my right arm up. I've never had a localized pain like this before.

Something worthy of calling the midwife? Or just ice it for now maybe? So far I haven't had any leaking so I'm not sure what's going on inside the boob at this point in pregnancy...

I guess I could go to a walk in clinic as well and see what they say.... does massage help?

yes, it happens. I've had it. 18w seems a little early, but who knows. I'd call the MW and have her check it out to be safe. Massage can help, it also hurts like heck. When I had it I was 35w with #2 and although not BFing at the time, had BFed DS1 for 13m (with several bouts of mastitis).

    middle boy 8.12.09 @ 39+4 7lbs 9oz, 21" BFed for 13.5 months
    little boy 4.26.11 @ 38+4 6lbs 14oz, 19.5" BFed until 26mo and again 30-37mo

TTA, but would welcome a surprise

I've never heard of a FTM getting mastitis, only in subsequent pregnancies. But man, did my breasts HURT during my first pregnancy! It actually sounds very much like what I experienced during my first pregnancy. It was like an energized buzzing kind of pain, and it was localized to different quadrants over time, as was the swelling. My breasts never just got bigger, they got bigger by sections! As it happened, each quadrant felt hot to me inside my body, but did not feel hot to the touch. I didn't have a midwife at the time, but the nurse advice line said if they weren't hot to the touch, then it wasn't something to worry about. I didn't have anything at all going on with my breasts during my second pregnancy.

Wow, I didn't even know it was possible! I agree that things have been much calmer in that region this second go-round, although a few times I've had that "I need to BF" full feeling, which is annoying when you can't actually do that yet! lol

I'd say based on the other ladies' responses it's probably nothing to be TOO worried about, but at the same time that's what midwives are for, so if you're concerned and it's easy to just pick up the phone, why not.

    Thanks ladies.

You know what it feels like, almost like I pulled a muscle. If I raise my right arm I get this muscle pulling sensation all across the top of my right breast.

Still no warmth, just swelling and pain in the top/outer quarter of the breast. I have very fibrous breasts so the whole area is swollen and not a specific sore spot or swollen lump. I kind of feels like a knot you would get in a muscle...

I'm just going to monitor it for now and see. I've been doing some massaging just in case that helps. If it doesn't get better by the end of the week or gets worse, I will call the midwife.

Ah yes, now that you mention it, I do remember talking with my nurse practitioner about it & she said it might be the fibrous adhesions getting pulled, and sometimes eventually broken. The hormones of pregnancy can also aggravate the condition, but as I said, it didn't the second time.

Oh, that makes perfect sense because that sort of explains what I'm feeling!

Ouch! It does make sense, but I hope it lets up for you soon. Maybe try heat or cold in addition to the massage?
