Dehydration can definitely bring on contractions (or uterine irritability at least). When a patient comes in with preterm labor, first thing we do is give them a bolus of IV fluid. BUT, I think that results in more than 12 hours of not drinking. More like chronic dehydration or when you are losing fluids through vomiting or diarrhea and not able to keep anything down to replace it.
I have never heard of this, but it sounds TERRIBLE and dangerous to me.
