Have any of you done it? Can you share your stories?
I had mine done last time and will again this time. I cannot say enough good things about it! I felt like compared to my first (in which I didn't have the placenta pills) I was a whole different person. Now that could just be because it was my second baby and I wasn't as freaked out as being a first time mom but I contribute some it to the placenta. I had more energy, my emotions were more stable and my bleeding and milk production was better. I recommend it to every mom I know! I would definitely look into it if I were you :)
I did it with my first, but because of a few silly circumstances, didn't start taking the pills until almost a full week after the birth. I do think that I saw a HUGE improvement in how I was feeling once I started taking them. I struggle with depression anyway, and I felt like I was spiraling into some serious baby blues by that point... and then I started taking them, and I was MUCH better. It didn't get 100% better, but, it got a lot better. I definitely want to do it this time, but, finances will be an issue... hmmm.... do I dare do it myself???
I think if I didn't have the funds for it I would definitely attempt to do it on my own. My husband of course would need to be out of the house because placentas freak him right out but I don't think it is too hard or even all that time consuming. Plus a few mommas on here have done theirs and I don't think they thought it was too bad. You can definitely do it :)
i've been looking onto doing it myself too. I have looked up a few blogs on it. It looks fairly easy. The idea of it kind of wigs my DH out too. but fair enough, it's not very main stream right now.
I have a natural hormonal imbalance (Which used to cause seizures - I have those under control now) but it was difficult to have a viable pregnancy to begin with (We could get pregnant - my body just wouldn't keep it). I don't like to take perscription drugs ( I think they do more harm than good - just from personal experience) and want something natural to help with the horomone fluctuation after baby comes. That is my biggest concern. I am not worried or anxious about the actual birthing (even though this is my first), But the post partum is what I worry about.
Is the steaming method better or is the raw encapulation better? (one you steam it for 30 minutes before dehydrating it the other you just dehydrate it).
Since you know you have hormonal fluctuations already and are worried I would definitely have it done or do it yourself. I think that it is really good that you are already thinking about the postpartum time. It can be a very stressful time especially with your first baby. I really really wish I would have known about it my first time because I was a wreck just because everything is so new and with breastfeeding and everything. Can I ask if you plan to breastfeed? I think that is also something that can help with your hormones. Breastfeeding releases "feel good hormones" and I was reading in Mothering magazine a while back that it can help some with PPD.
As for the methods of preparing the placenta I am not sure as I have a girl that does mine for me (for $100). I am not sure if it really matters too much which way you do it. I will say my hubby does like to tell people that his wife "eats her placenta" LOL he loves to see the look on peoples faces. :)
I had mine done. My baby was born just before Christmas and the woman who did mine comes to your home but we had family staying with us so I didn't get my capsules until I was almost 2 weeks PP. Mine was steamed and dehydrated. After watching her do it I am sure you could do it yourself. I think they made a big difference for me. This is my first but the week after I started them was much better for me than before and when I got a yeast infection at 3 weeks PP and had to stop them for a week (Since they are based on chinese medicine you are supposed to stop them if you get an infection to keep ying and yang balance) and I started crying every night. I have to admit that week we were also dealing with thrush but the next week when I was back on them we had three days of constant crying and nursing problems and I still felt better than the week before. I should also mention that we moved half across the country at 6 weeks PP so this whole time I was dealing with packing and cleaning our house. I love my placenta capsules and will definitely be having them made after each pregnancy.
After all that I do have to say that I am a pharmacist and there is no actual research showing how much of the hormones are left in the placenta after steaming and dehydration. Obviously this didn't deter me from trying it and I really think they worked for me but if you have a known hormonal imbalance I would encourage you to look into bio-medical hormone replacement therapy. That is where they take samples from you and compound hormone replacement for you that is specific to your body. It is much better than the one size fits all hormone replacement pills so many doctors prescribe. (Can you tell I'm oddly pro-natural and anti-meds for a pharmacist? lol)
Please post if you encapsulate yours yourself. I'm interested to know how that goes.
It is refreshing to see a pharmacist who is pro-natural. My sister was a pharmacetical technition and she left that to own her own All natural health and wellness store. I call her my witch doctor :) I have a lot of products from her store to help me and my DH out.
If I do the encapsulation myself (which I am really considering seriously now) I will defintiely post it and make a video on it. I have heard so many wonderful things about it, and woman who say their recovery time was much better and easier on them.
I start my prenatal classes tonight so I will find out the hospitals policy on keeping the placenta.
I've never heard of this!! Very interesting... too late for me but interesting anyway...
