Hello ladies!
DH and I found out a week ago that we are expecting our second. We're very excited and even more excited that we will be with our midwife group the entire pregnancy. My last pregnancy began with an RE and then to my OB until 20 weeks when we switched to the birth center. BEST DECISION EVER!
We have also talked homebirth and definitely want to interview the midwife who does them in our area (she lives right down the road from me!). Our insurance currently is not considering our birth center in-network so we're going to be paying out of pocket anyway, so I want to consider homebirth at least!
The thing with homebirth in Georgia is that there is some law that prevents midwives from attending homebirths. Something to do with the state law about insurance or something (I can't remember exactly). So they don't have OB backup. That's a question I'll have to ask the homebirth midwife.
But anyways, regardless, it'll be out of the hospital for sure!!!
This was a surprise pg so we have to get ourselves back in gear! Will be fun though as this is one of DH's and my favorite topics![]()
Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Mindie (TyrantoftheWeek) is in GA, and she had 1 homebirth and is planning another. She might know more specifics about the law. Not having physician back-up wouldn't be that big of a deal, though--if you show up at a hospital, they legally have to treat you.

Yeah, I was facing the same thing with potentially not having OB back-up if I went with a CPM. In that case, I would have carried dual coverage. I would have paid out of pocket for my MW and then been seen by an OB that my insurance covered just so I at least had a relationship and was familiar with an OB practice in the event of a transfer of coverage. The CPM I was talking to said she rarely had emergency transfers, that most of the time she risked people out before it got to that point, so there would be plenty of time to re-group and form another game-plan.
But anyways, I blabbed on enough... HOW EXCITING!!! I hope you get everything you want. HH9M!!

What I did with my last pregnancy is see the doctor until like 20 weeks and then just didn't go back. With this pregnancy, they pried me for answers as to why I left and dismissed me. My homebirth midwife has moms that see a certain midwife that will back up a homebirth (kinda in secret...)
I am kinda glad the midwives aren't credentialed here. When you have alphabet soup behind your name, you need to follow all kinda of stupid rules and regulations (No going over 41 weeks, no catching breeches or twins, and all kinds of other stuff) The midwives here are free to practice as they see fit.

Congrats on your pregnancy! That would be amazing to maybe have your MW down the street from you!
I don't have OB back up here, though I could choose to visit one if I like, for our homebrith. This pregnancy I have decided not to be seen by an OB at all and am ok with getting whomever in the event that I have to transfer since I'll be forced into a c-section at that point. Its been a really nice experience just seeing my MW for all my care and I feel it has actually been much more informative and educational.

I saw an OB until 20 weeks with my son and when I left, they never called. Not once. When I finally requested my records, I guess they then knew where I was, but there was no concern at all before.
We are seriously going to discuss our options. I already contacted the m/w down the street from me and we will meet soon.
Either way, I'm excited to be starting this pregnancy fresh and knowledgeable about natural pregnancy and birth
Thanks ladies!
