    Default update (long)

It looks like my posting is going to be sparse for a little while. My computer died a couple days ago, when Ds1 (3yo) decided to PEE ON IT while watching a dvd.

I had my first mw appt on Thursday, which was lovely. Everything is looking good right now. I'm even hydrated! She couldn't find the hb on doppler, but she was able to hear the placental implantation site (where my pulse is strongest), and she heard the baby moving a lot. My mw has recently been certified to provide clinical hours for nurses in training, so at some point during my prenatal care (or labor) she might have a student nurse tagging along. She's pretty exited about being able to introduce nurses to an entirely different perspective on prenatal care and pregnancy. I think it's pretty cool too!

Yesterday, I had a second u/s appt at the crisis pregnancy center. They have a nurse who is training to do u/s scans, and they wanted me to come in for a second training session. Baby was VERY active, and had the hiccups! We also got to see baby sucking its thumb! Unfortunately, all the activity made it difficult to get good resolution on a still shot.

The big news with the u/s is that baby's measurements are now closer to the edd based on lmp. My first u/s, they moved my edd from 3/20 to 3/11, which would mean that I conceived on the last day of my period--not possible, because I didn't dtd that week. My lmp also sets approximate ovulation to the same time that I think I ovulated (I was monitoring CM). Yesterday's u/s put edd at 3/15--only five days off of my calculation. I think that my first u/s caught baby at the end of a growth spurt. So I called the mw, and she agreed that we should set my edd back at 3/20.

Anyway, in the scan, the hb was 190--which seemed awfully fast to me. The senior nurse, who was supervising the training session, assured me that it wasn't unusual at this point in pregnancy. The upper limit on the normal range is 185, but she said that it was perfectly normal to see higher than that when the baby was being active (just like for people on the outside). She also said that 12 wks is when the hb is at its highest for the pregnancy. The mw confirmed what the nurse said when I told her about it on the phone.

So, other than my computer, everything is good!

I'm sorry but I'm about DS1 peeing on the computer. I know it's not funny from your perspective but the imagery from this end is hilarious!

Glad to hear they moved your EDD back. I find it a bit amusing and so odd that instead of going by LMP some go by the u/s measurements especially in the case like yours where it would've put it at a time where it could NOT be possible to have gotten pregnant, it's really sad actually!!

Glad to hear it was a good appt!

I think it's funny about ds1, too. Just not in front of ds. What's not funny is that he killed my last computer, too (three years ago). He messed with the keyboard in such a way that the screen would no longer work. Tech support couldn't figure it out. What's really funny is that he refuses to believe that the computer is broken.

It is odd about the u/s and my edd. I've run into this before. There seems to be one camp of med professionals who believe that u/s is more accurate than lmp. The other camp says that u/s can be wildly inaccurate at any point in pregnancy. What was really odd was that the nurse told me that they were moving my edd up by four days in the same breath that she told me that u/s was the most accurate means of estimating due date.

    Go figure.

It's sort of amusing. Like a dr standing directly in front of a lady with very obviously 2 eyes and him trying to tell her she has 3 eyes because the piece of paper he's holding says she has 3 eyes. It's just kind of like, well, duh, what are you going to believe, the u/s or ME!!!!

Patient: My DH and I did NOT have sex on these certain days, it's IMPOSSIBLE for me to be xxx gestation.
Dr: (in an annoyingly righteous voice) *clears throat* Well, I have an u/s here that says you ARE xxx gestation, so that's what you are. Got it?!
Patient: Well, can't those u/s's, even the early ones, be off?
Dr: Blasphemy! Do not question my technology, it knows more about what you are than you do!!!!

okay, these are the funny visuals that go through my head sometimes. Just thought I'd let everyone else in on a little bit of my crazy

And I realize this is not what happened to you, but I've heard so many similar stories. Some of them a little more disturbing than others!

That's exactly what happened to me with ds1. And because of insurance, the mw had to use the u/s for dating too.

It's kinda like Monty Python's Meaning of Life with the Machines that Go Ping
