Fascinating! I imagine that going over like a lead balloon in the states, but... one can always hope?

I'm thrilled to see this. Breech babies were born safely all the time before c-sections were possible. I know not all of them were safe, but with monitoring, it should be perfectly safe to deliver some of the breech babies vaginally and only use the c-section as an emergency procedure.

Do doctors in the US ever try vaginal birth with breech babies? I've never known anyone who has done it---they have always had c-sections. But I have heard of babies being born breech at birthing centers or in home births.

My doula says she does think this will trickle down eventually, but it will take time... It's good news though.

There are some US doctors who will deliver breech babies- but they are few and far between. I think you're more likely to be able to deliver breech if it's not your first pregnancy...my hospital will let you try if you're not a FTM.

Great news for my Doula clients! Although the actual article it links to does say that most docs in Canada still don't know how to deliver breech babies because for the last while it's been an automatic c-sec. So there are very few OB's who are experienced in breech deliveries. They have to spend extra money to train all the OB's who don't know how to deliver breech babies safely. So it's not going to be a quick change, but it should help in the next few years decrease the c-sec rate. Though I still think out of all c-sections that very few are because of breech, the most common reason for a first c-sec is still failure to progress.

ACOG won't consider it until they can find a way to make money off of doing breech vaginal deliveries.

wow, that was bitter wasn't it

Yeah the lack of training is a big issue. It will do no good to recommend this unless doctors are trained in vaginal breech again. I do have a friend who delivered her twins in a hospital with an OB and mw team and baby A was breech. They usually do not allow a vaginal birth if baby A is breech, so I was impressed. This is a really well known natural birth team in our area though.

It's funny, this is the second time I've seen this in a few days. Our version of the ACOG, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) changed their policies on this last summer. Much of it in thanks to Robin, who I believe sometimes still lurks here. Check out www.breechbirth.ca It's the website for her Coalition for Breech Birth organization. Very interesting stuff and they are doing great work across Canada. Canada is slowly making progress. I do hope the US begins it's way back to normal birth asap. With the new c/s rates just released (over 32%) it's so necessary. (of course, I'm preaching to the choir here! lol)

ACOG won't consider it until they can find a way to make money off it...and to deliver breech within 3 hours so they don't miss their dinner.....I don't see many American doctors having the patience to wait out a breech birth, and I'm sure that even if they no longer result in automatic c-section, most breeches would still end up as c-sections for failure to progress.

The US is behind on everything. I wish things would change. But we are the stand out in the world. We tend to do everything the wrong way. It is all about money and who makes the money and who controls the money. Until everyone starts looking at what is best for people rather than how much goes in their pocket, things are going to continue to be backwards.

Yeah...a little ranty. Sorry.

Hm. I know my birth center is not allowed to deliver breech, but I don't know if the hospital allows it or not.

I'm trying to assume that this won't be an issue at this point, but if it becomes one, I'm definitely going to look into the possibilities! TFS!

i'm moving to canada!

seriously though.... i'm ok with capitalism as long as its not dictated by bodies like the ACOG and insurance agencies who seem to have absolute control. And i become physically ill reading the new healthcare policy.

i already live about 1.5 hrs away from the border... what do you think it would take for me to cross over?

If you're interested in consumer efforts to bring back vaginal breech birth, Robin's coalition has a U.S. chapter. If you join the facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?v=info&ref=profile&id=17806032#!/group.php?gid=5701718161), you can get in touch with Christie, the U.S. chapter leader.

Yeah, I think it made her feel like her cesarean wasn't necessary or something! I think when a woman gets that defensive about her cesarean birth, there's still a lot of bad feelings about it. But sounds to me like it was a very good thing she had one.
