Thanks everyone! I'm so excited to have a lodge!!! Vanessa, it's funny you say that, because I also feel like I've been waiting forever to have a lodge- and at the same time it's hard to believe it's here!

I'm going to start working on my intro and hopefully post it by the end of the day! Smile

My intro… I can almost guarantee will be extra long, because I am always long winded… Smile

So, the first time I laid eyes on my DH (Joel) was at work. We are both elementary school teachers. I was working at an international school in Riga, Latvia (Europe). My family is Latvian (all my grandparents are Latvian, they came to the States in the 50s), I grew up speaking Latvian, and being Latvian-American has been a huge part of my life. Joel came to the school to interview for a job there. He is Australian, but his eldest brother married an Australian- Latvian, and had been living in Latvia for years. Joel had visited several times, and even lived there for a year once, and was looking to come back. So, he came to my school looking for a job- the HR lady brought him around and after I met him I pulled her aside later and said, “If he’s single, hire him!” That was in January of 2006.

In August of 2006 Joel had been hired and we spent a few days together in early August doing some re-writing of the math curriculum (along with some other teachers). I was dating someone else at the time, but, it was purely a rebound relationship, and I was really over it. We were back at school a few weeks later, doing pre-kid prep- we both went out of our way to have lunch together, walk to the bus stop together, etc. Basically, by the end of the first week of school with kids (only two weeks later), I had broken up with my boyfriend, and Joel and I had already been on a date or two, I’d met his brother and his brother’s family…and the rest is history!

I moved in with Joel in March of 2007. In Feb of 2008 we went to a job fair in England, and got new jobs at our current school in Luanda, Angola. This was a pretty big deal as obviously, we were making a life decision together, even though we weren’t engaged yet. In March we came to the States and he met most of my family for the first time. We finally got engaged in April of 2008- which is another great story (he proposed at a bowling alley, in front of lots of my friends/colleagues)…here’s a picture: marry me

We were married July 18, 2009 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It was a great destination wedding… we had 36 people come from all over the world including Michigan, Arizona, Colorado, Australia, Latvia, New Zealand and Indonesia… it was really awesome! Although the "official word" was given in Spanish by a local judge, my younger brother led the ceremony, which was based in traditional Latvian pagan practices... it was very sweet, and there was not a dry eye in the place!

on the beach

So the baby story started right away… I am one of those women who knew since she was a little girl that all I ever really wanted was to have babies. He knew this about me. We had originally talked about starting TTC in January 2010, but, changed our plans after we moved to Angola. Because medical care in Angola is not good, we knew that I would end up spending either the end of my pregnancy, or the first few months of our child’s life in the States without Joel- we decided that we would rather be apart for pregnancy than infancy.

So we decided that we would just stop using contraception on our wedding night. I had been using the Taking Charge of Your Fertility software to track my cycles just keeping track of periods and mucus, and knew that I would be ovulating on our honeymoon! My period started the day after the wedding (no wonder I barely fit into my wedding dress- I was bloated!), and two weeks later on our honeymoon in Mauritius our little Moonshine, as we have come to call the baby, was conceived.

We found out I was pregnant at 10 DPO, a week or two after we had returned to Angola. I took test early on a Saturday morning and couldn’t believe my eyes. Joel was gone for the day- out surfing. I had already bought him a couple of pregnancy for the expectant father books, so, I got those out, and put them in a gift bag along with the tests (I ended up taking another one later in the day because I was just so excited and in disbelief). I could hardly wait for him to get home…and when he did he had no idea what he was looking at when he looked at the tests. When he finally realized, he got tears in his eyes, and we hugged for a long time. Smile

I didn’t go to the doctor until I was 13 weeks pregnant because we waited until we could get to the doctor in South Africa, instead of going in Angola. It was a great appt, and we saw a very healthy, active baby.

I never had any morning sickness… some nausea, but I never puked. I did feel very tired in the first months, and couldn’t WAIT to stop working. As a teacher, I have always loved my job, but, after 7 years of teaching, I felt very ready for my own kid, and done with other people’s!

We came to Michigan in December for the holidays. I ended up taking my maternity leave early, so I stayed in Michigan when Joel went back to Angola in January. We were apart during the months of January, February and March. Joel returned to Michigan on March 28! It was a really, really fabulous day! Smile He is here for 6 weeks now, with a May 8 departure date set. Hopefully, Moonshine arrives before or near his/her April 28 due date! Joel will go back to work to finish out the school year, and will be back again in June- just a day after my 30th birthday!

My pregnancy has really been very easy- I can’t complain. The only complication that has arisen recently is that Moonshine is breech. I’ve been going to the chiropractor, seeing an acupuncturist, and doing other at home things too. I just had an ultrasound and midwife appointment today, and it looks like, if baby hasn’t turned on his/her own by next Friday (April 9), then we’ll do a version that day. I certainly appreciate any and all baby-turning thoughts in the meantime! Smile

If you're interested, I have been blogging this whole pregnancy... 9 Months with Moonshine- you can have a look at 9mwm.blogspot.com.

Wow...what an exciting life you have as an international teacher. That is something I've always wanted to do (I am a teacher also). Will you continue to travel now that you are having kids? I know a few adults who grew up in various countries due to their parents teaching in international schools and they loved it. Is it possible to get by on one teacher's salary? I know my DH would love to live outside the US, but he would have to be a SAHD.

We are planning on continuing to travel even with the kids. We go back for one more year in Angola in August (although I will not be working next school year- I get to do the SAHM thing for one school year at least!). At Christmas time we'll go to Australia to see Joel's family, and then head through Bangkok to a job fair in early January. We are hoping to find new jobs somewhere in southeast Asia, or possibly South America.

It depends on where you live as for getting by on one teacher's salary- and depends on how you live, of course...but, I would say in most places, it is possible... more possible than living on one teacher's salary in the States- especially because in a lot of places your housing is paid for.

*Sigh* Not much going on here...the weather got cold and rainy again suddenly (it was 80 degrees and sunny yesterday!).

I'm just on the couch... trying to drink, drink, drink and think turning thoughts.

I find it very frustrating to feel like there isn't much I can DO to make this kid turn. I mean...I am doing things. I had an ice pack at the top of my fundus earlier...but Moonshine seems pretty good at just scooting left or right to avoid it, rather than actually flipping. Stubborn little person! And I'm going to the chiro and doing acupuncture and moxibustion, inversions, etc... but it still just feels like there should be MORE that I can do!

We bought out our registry at BRU the other day...we now have the changing station all set up- changing pad, diapers, wipes, etc. I finally got my hands on socks and hats for the wee one (hard to find white or at least not pink/blue!).

Part of me is thinking that if we end up having to go through with the version next week, we'll end up meeting this little one ahead of schedule. It's just a gut feeling. On the one hand, since Joel has to go back to Angola on May 8, it wouldn't be bad to have an early baby...on the other hand, I just so, so, so would like to have a natural birth...

I'm still really comfortable physically, and still really enjoying pregnancy...but I think just mentally I'm getting to the point of feeling very ready to meet this baby...

Here's a pic of me at 36 weeks...

You look fab! Have you check out any of the spinning babies stuff? It helps with getting the baby to turn. I just thought I would ask because you mentioned sitting on the couch and maybe you could be laying in a different postion.

Thanks!

I have looked at spinning babies. When I'm on the couch I try to lay on my left side, kneel on my knees or at least sit leaning towards my left. I'm trying to avoid spending too much time lounging/laying back...

Wow---You look so comfortable still. My belly looks much bigger at 29 weeks. Are you tall? I've noticed taller women don't appear as big as shorter women due to having a longer torso.

GL with baby turning. I've heard acupuncture and chiropractic treatments can also help turn a baby.

hi Mara! Welcome to your lodge, I am sorry I am so late to post! Every time I get on to read it I get interrupted. I have been sending you head-down vibes since you first mentioned Moonshine was breech, but i will have to try harder Smile
Your intro was very interesting, to hear how you met and all of your plans for the future, too.
I have heard of versions causing labor to begin, so you may be right about an early appearance. They don't even do versions at my hospital.
Hopefully something else will help before that!
I look forward to following your journey!

What a wonderful introduction! Welcome to your lodge. How wonderful to be able to travel so much and to keep on doing it with a LO. I'm too chicken I guess to do something like that with kids, without the family support. I will live vicariously through you if you don't mind Smile DH and I want to travel a bunch when he retires, we love being in new places, meeting new people and seeing the social differences. I'm a social science nerd!

Crossing my fingers that you can get baby head down. Will you be able to deliver breech if baby doesn't move?

Went to the midwife again today. Moonshine is still breech. We scheduled the version for Friday- 8:30am. The good news is that Moonshine is still very high, not at all engaged, which bodes well for the version working. I still have a moxa stick at home, which I will continue to use every day, and I have one more acupuncture appt on Thursday too.

momW- My hospital won't let a first time mom deliver vaginally if the baby is breech. It's an automatic c-section.

I'm having weird feelings about all this- I cried a lot between weeks 34 and 36 every time I thought about Moonshine being breech and not flipping. I think I am getting to the point of finding some peace in the situation. I have planned and prepared extensively for a natural hospital birth since the day I found out I was pregnant. And I think part of me was always scared (because you hear so many bad stories, etc) that I would somehow "fail" and end up with a c-section. Somehow this situation feels like it's taken the chance of "failure" out of my hands... if Moonshine doesn't turn, Moonshine doesn't turn. I still plan on going into labor naturally, to give him/her the most time possible to flip. And of course, I would love to have him/her flip, and to be able to face the challenge to deliver naturally. Smile

Got swabbed for GBS- hoping that comes back negative! And everything else looks good... blood pressure low, urine normal, etc.

Sounds like you are in a good place emotionally, but I wouldn't give up hope yet. You're still very early yet, I've known many babies to flip past 36 weeks.

Thanks ladies!

Reaching term is wonderful... and crazy! I feel like I have been pregnant forever, and at the same time like it has gone by so quickly!

I had an intense acupuncture session today- I guess the guy decided to pull out all the stops...but so far, haven't felt any special movement since then. And I was still getting kicked in the cervix a little while ago, so... Sad I'm really just hoping that the version goes easily and smoothly tomorrow. I have been doing so much to try to turn this baby... I guess I'm just hoping that if s/he doesn't flip on his/her own, then that everything I have done has prepared a good space for him/her to flip easily with some help.

I'm feeling emotional... it's so frustrating to be so different from my DH when it comes to some things... I mean...we both want what's best for our LO, right? But, sometimes it seems that he honestly thinks I'm putting my virtues or morals or something ahead of the well being of our child...like, (no offense to anyone who is) I feel like he treats me like those religious people that don't take their kids to doctors but only pray for them. Like I'm bucking the system just for the sake of bucking the system. Sigh.

We went to the hospital tonight for the tour... I suppose it was good to see where we'll be, etc...but, honestly, it probably made me more nervous than comfortable. It's still a hospital, and the nurse was still a nurse (made some comments about considering drugs, etc)... sigh. Maybe the one good thing is that she and some of the other nurses were so taken with my DH's accent that they seemed more interested in him than me... maybe it'll be the same way when I'm there in labor... I can just hang with my doula, and they can entertain each other...

Hope the version goes well for you and sorry DH is not on board. That would be hard. Is he willing to read anything? For my DH reading actual studies that supported what I believed made him understand. How does he do when talking to your mw? I find my DH is really trusting if my mw says something, more so than if I tell him the exact same information.

So we're headed to the version this morning... appt is at 8:30am (1/2 hour from now!). Wish us luck! I'm wearing the blessing necklace that was put together for me at my shower... hoping all these good thoughts and everything I've done so far all makes for a quick and easy procedure!

Moonshine was really active last evening/during the night... but as far as I can tell, s/he's still breech at this mo.
