Alright so let's see... DH and I have been together for 10 years now and married for 7 years. It has been very long and very short at the same time. I am convinced that he is the only guy I have ever met who could deal with all my quirks and still want to be around me, much less marry me! Smile

I grew up in Anchorage, AK but moved to BC Canada for my Junior and Senior year of highschool because my dad was coaching a Junior A hockey team there. While I was there I met DH during my Junior year and I was done. We actually met in our school's musical, Bye Bye Birdie. He's not much of a singer but can dance and liked to be surrounded by the very high girl to guy ratio Wink

DH and I at a hockey game

I knew within 2 months of dating that I was going to marry him. His mom was awful to me and was very outspoken in her opinion that we should break up. My parents were neutral because they didn't want to put any baggage on us. Everyone else laughed or rolled their eyes and said we would never even make it out of high school still together. Boy were they wrong! LOL

DH and I at Grad (prom, at the very end of the year the day of graduation)

We moved to Oregon as soon as we graduated. It took us a year to realize that we didn't have to have a traditional wedding to get married. We didn't have the money to afford a traditional wedding, we refused to put our parents into debt for a wedding and most importantly we knew how his mom would act...

DH and I at 18 on the Salem capitol building steps

Sooo, we eloped! We had a really beautiful waterfront ceremony with gorgeous wedding clothes and professional pictures. We just didn't invite anyone Smile We used the professional pictures to send out with announcements to let everyone know that we got married. We were both 19 at the time and it was definitely the right choice for us.

Our wedding announcement picture

I am incredibly proud of our relationship because I know being high school sweethearts and getting married as "teens" statistically puts us at a disadvantage but I can honestly say that since the day we got together we have never broken up and since we got married we have never discussed or mentioned divorce. He truly is my best friend and I rarely tire of being around him. Smile

Ugh, apparently my Dr took a closer look at my urine samples from yesterday and ordered a 24 urine sample Sad I have been having a little bit of protein in my urine for several months and she hasn't been concerned because my BP has been great (which it still is) but I'm guessing there was more protein yesterday which is why she wants to be on the safe side. I was really dehydrated yesterday so I'm hoping that's what caused this and that the 24 hour sample will come back great....

Sorry to hear about the protein, but hopefully you're right that it was just one bad day.

Birth story of Kostas Bryan, July 10th 2007, 8 lbs 8oz, 19 inches

On July 9th 2007(which is my sister’s birthday) (at 39w6d), at about noon, DH and I were still in bed sleeping (because DH was working graveyard so I had shifted my sleep schedule to match his). I was just starting to wake up when I coughed and felt a small gush. I had been having pretty regular contractions the evening and night before but they weren’t painful and petered out so I had convinced myself it was just false labor. While I was sleeping I did have some contractions that woke me up but I had just brushed them off. So when I felt the gush I thought “No… No way!” But then it happened again! So I got up to go to the bathroom, which woke up DH. As I stood beside the bed there was a much bigger gush and my eyes got big as I said “I think my water just broke!” DH was still waking up so he had a very confused look on his face LOL. When I came back from the bathroom I said, “Yep, my water broke!” So I went and called my Dr and our doula, took a shower and we were off to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital at about 1:00pm and then they hooked me up to the monitors and his heart rate was great as usual. My contractions were registering less than 5 minutes apart and pretty “big” although I just barely felt them. For several hours I alternated between being monitored and walking the halls with DH to help labor progress.

At my last OB appointment I had been at 2cm dilated and 75% effaced. When we arrived at the hospital I was at 3 cm dilated and 100% effaced. I was very thankful to have at least a little bit of a start to 10cm. However at about 5-6 o’clock the OB became concerned about a spike in my BP (this was right after my IL’s went against our wishes and showed up at the hospital and were trying to come up to our room…) Because of this I was told I had to stay in bed to labor (or I would “have a stroke” ugh that OB was a *itch). This made the contractions much harder to handle.

Somewhere around 7pm they checked me again and I was still at 3cm! I was so discouraged! I admit that I shed some tears at this point… Soon after this my contractions really started to pick up and got really painful. I don’t know what time it was but when they next checked me I was at 7cm! The contractions continued to get stronger and closer together. What was once moaning through contractions soon became more like yelling… I remember at about 11pm I said, “I don’t care if he’s born on my sister’s birthday, let’s just make this end!” (LOL) But sure enough we passed midnight and it was no longer my sister’s birthday but my due date. I continued to yell and squeeze the heck out of DH’s hand and soon I was at 9cm! I was so happy to hear that except not only were the contractions outrageously painful and close together, but I could also feel my body starting to push on its own. The nurse told me to breathe through the contractions because I still had a lip of cervix on one side. I was squeezing DH’s hand like my life depended on it and “breathing” through the contractions (which I found out later translated to basically blowing spit in DH’s face, he was such a trooper though, he never said a word.) During this the nurse got another nurse and started breaking down the end of the bed for delivery.

“Finally!” I remember thinking. The nurse wanted me to do a practice push but when she felt how low his head was she changed her mind and quickly went to call the Dr. So I finally started pushing, my doula on one side and DH on the other side, holding my hand the whole time. In the background (I was very focused on pushing) I heard the nurse saying things like “Where is the Dr?” and “I don’t know if the Dr is going to make it!” Then I hear one of the nurses say “We need to get the closest Dr!” So suddenly there was a nurse in my line of vision saying some sort of introduction of who this Dr was that was now at my feet. I waved my hand at the nurse to say “I don’t care, just get it done!” and said OK. The pressure was incredibly intense and right before he crowned I heard the Dr say “There’s the head.” And then I pushed again and she said “There’s the body.” 3:03 am my sweet boy was born! From my “practice push” to birth was 8 minutes! He started to cry and they put him up on my chest. I wrapped my hands around his chubby body and he stopped crying right away. As I squeezed him gently with my fingers I said “He’s so chubby!” and started to laugh. No tears here apparently LOL. When they took him to clean him up and wrap him up and for me to deliver the placenta I had a sudden gender panic… I kind of shouted across the room “Wait, is Kostas really a Kostas?” The Dr said “I don’t know, I didn’t check.” Then the nurse said the same thing and so did DH. Finally I said “Well somebody check!” LOL. Sure enough he was a boy just like the U/S tech had said.

When they gave him back to me I just stared in awe at this beautiful baby and the fact that I had done it without any pain medication. As I finished delivering the placenta, DH was holding him and it was the most beautiful sight, my 2 boys together… amazing! They transferred us up to the Mother/Baby unit and we sat as a family of 3 and watched the sunrise with our beautiful first born baby. Cloud nine would have been an understatement for how I was feeling!

I took this myself of DH's first moment holding his brand new baby. I was waiting for the placenta to come out but this moment was too precious to let slip by and thankfully the camera was within reach!

Kostas just hours old.

By this point the lack of sleep and physical exertion had caught up with me. (Not to mention some boundary smashing by my IL's...)

Sounds like a pretty good birth over all! What's the plan for this time? Much different?

What is the pronunciation of your son's name? Where does the name come from? Do you have a name picked out for this LO?

Kostas is Greek and it is pronounced k-O-stas not like cost-tas Smile For this baby we have Marek picked out. It is pronounced like Merrick just spelled differently so no one can shorten it Smile

With Kostas' birth I knew I wanted to go natural with no epidural or medication but I didn't really have much of a plan other than a doula and being mobile (the latter which got squashed by the pushy OB...) This time I have been doing the home study of Hypnobabies and there are labor tubs at the hospital I will be at so I fully plan to utilize those! They don't "allow" waterbirths in them, but I'm going to see if I can pull one of anyway Smile hehe

Asha!! So glad to see you over here!

The IL's are "nicer" to me now but there is still a lot of under-handed comments and stuff which Kostas is starting to pick up on and shying away from MIL more... it's pretty sad actually, although I'm sure she will just say its my fault anyway Sad

They aren't coming to meet the baby until MARCH because they "don't want to have to share us" with my parents. Which is code for "we just don't want to spend Xmas with Shauna's family"... even though my family has bent over backwards to make them feel welcome and included in the past Sad

We originally planned on staying on the Kenai Peninsula for Xmas with my parents but decided to come home 12/17 and have a quiet Xmas just the 4 of us. We are not telling his parents because of the sh**t they have pulled about not visiting the Peninsula. So they will just have to wait until March to meet him.

I'm very familiar with Kostas as a Greek name and with Marek as a Polish name. Smile Both very handsome names!
Do you feel at all organized and prepared yet? I hope you are fairly relaxed, happy and comfortable!
I'd like to hear a bit about where you and DH are living these days and where you have both been working if you care to share. I haven't heard much since you were working in day care.

Ugh. That's really sad about your ILs. We have both sets of family wanting to know why *we're* not traveling to them for Christmas. Neither will come to us! Every trip home is a stressful balancing act for us because they live 20 minutes from each other but refuse to do anything together. We too are staying home for a quiet Christmas.

Can't wait for hypnobabies to help us rock our births! Biggrin

That is madness! Freshly postpartum mom and brand new baby?! You definitely should not be having to go to anyone!

So I finally heard back from the Dr about my 24 hour urine protein test. My level was 170 and they don't get concerned until it hits 300. So yet another bullet dodged LOL.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is also my last day of work!! Kostas and I fly out Thursday morning from our little Southeast Alaskan island to the Kenai Peninsula! I am so ready to just BE where I am going to be for the birth of this baby and not have to worry about the possibility of being medevac-ed out. Plus, I am starting to get so much pressure and pelvic pain that I am ready to be done working. I have no doubt I could keep going but I will definitely enjoy being done at 37 weeks Smile

So my last day at work was cut short. I came down with the flu and have had a pretty miserable day. I'm starting to feel better and getting ready to finally eat something (soup) but I still need to pack tonight... Its hard too because DH is out of town and I could use his help tonight Sad

On the upside I had my 37 week appt today and I had great BP (100/60), no protein in my urine and I am GBS negative! Woot!

We are living in Southeast Alaska now on an island. It is a really great community of about 3,000. DH is a police officer here and I am a preschool teacher at the Children's Center here. It has been probably the best move that we have ever undertaken and I think we are going to stay here for good.

I feel mostly prepared. I really nested the heck out of the house and it is pretty darn clean and organized which feels great. When I get off the plane tomorrow on the Kenai Peninsula I will definitely be more relaxed and happy. LOL!

I know a Marek- he's English, but of Polish background- and a VERY good guy. Smile Lovely choice!

Ooh, I hope you feel better soon! I know what you mean about getting to the place where you're going to birth. I left for the States from Laos at 30 weeks, which is not that late in a pregnancy, but, I was SO ready to not be half a world away, and in a place where I would have to be medivac-ed out as well! I hope you're settling in nicely now!

And yay for such a great appt!

Can I just say as well, that it sounds like you guys are really happy on your island home, and it just sounds kind of idyllic! Police officer, preschool teacher, two little boys... sounds really great!

I feel like I haven't been able to get on here and say hey in awhile! What a great birth story! Sounds like you were a trooper thru all the pain and being made to stay in bed, etc. I am interested to hear how Hypnobabies works for you this time.

I love the name Marek for your LO. I knew a guy in high school with that name and I have always loved it.

Yay for making it to 37 weeks! Yuck to being sick. Sad I hope you feel better soon. I was sick the past couple days too. Not sure if it was anything other than a virus, but it stinks being sick and in the last month of your pregnancy.

I am finally here! After almost 12 hours of travel yesterday we are finally here! I am so relieved. I must say though, I feel like I have a travel hangover or something... Yesterday I felt pretty much back to my normal self after the flu the day before but today I feel nauseous again with some diahrea and my neck aches. Plus I had a miserable night of sleep last night too. Sad

5 more days until DH gets here! I am definitely counting down the days becauser A) I do NOT want to labor/birth without him, he's my rock and Dirol I do not want him to miss the birth of his baby either.

It is so wonderful getting to spend time with my parents and siblings though. I am in heaven for sure. As is Kostas! He has been a ball of energy non-stop since we got off the plane last night. Smile

I'm am definitely doing a lot of chilling to encourage Cricket to at least wait until DH gets here! LOL I have been enjoying my parents and siblings so much though. Sometimes I find myself laughing so hard that I have to hold my belly and try to stop laughing because it causes so much pelvic pressure! LMAO! For the most part Cricket seems quite content where he is though... I am starting to feel it though, I feel like I'm getting more uncomfortable by the day. Ugh. Its all for a good cause though Smile

The upside is that I am no longer feeling the effects of all the travel. So in that regard I am feeling much better!

Here's some pictures from our day of travels:

On the plane, playing with his plane

My little island boy thought these were pretty awesome! LOL

Yogurtland was the only part of the Anchorage airport that made it bearable to be there for over 3 hours...

Had my 38 week appt yesterday (and first with the midwives here). It went well. It was a pretty boring appt all in all but that's ok Smile

My BP was 115/70. My weight has stayed the same for a few weeks. The midwife was happy to hear that my pregnancy and birth with Kostas was so uncomplicated and intervention/pain-med free. My biggest question was what their policy is on siblings because Kostas really wants to be there for the birth. Thankfully she said as long as he has his own support person then its no problem at all. Which I had already planned on for him. My mom is going to be his support person as long as she is in town and if she's not then my brother will be his support person. I have an appt next Tuesday with a different of the 3 midwives and then I will have met them all Smile

I'm feeling pretty good still. Definitely increasing pelvic pressure but it is nice to be able to put my feet up through out the day vs working all day long.

DH gets here today either at 8pm or 10pm and I am very ready for him to be here Smile

Kostas is really enjoying my parents dog, it makes me miss our dog though...

Kostas is loving all the Uncle time he is getting with my brother. We haven't seen my brother in 2 years so it is awesome to spend so much time with him!

Yesterday we even got to go watch my sister practice. We have no ice rink where we live so its been a while since he has been to one. Oh man how I wanted to be the one out there playing!

You mean you moved permanently to a place with no arena? Hard to believe! Sarah's Forrest is 3 months old tomorrow and she's been back on the ice for a few weeks already. Wink

I hope you get a photo of Kostas meeting Daddy tonight! Then 2 more weeks to go! And I hope Kostas gets to be there for the big event of his brother's birth. It is delightful to see the photos of each of Sarah's children's response to the baby's birth. (http://www.dragonflyphotography.ca/)

LOL Gardenbug, it is definitely the one thing about our wonderful Southeast Alaskan island that is missing. DH and I miss playing terribly but everything else is so wonderful that it feels like a doable trade. I think the community is just too small thus far to support a rink. After Kostas was born I was playing in my first tournament back at 2 months PP... Wish I could be again. I have taken up running in the absence of hockey, so I will be back to that when the snow melts in March Smile

Well I don't know if its anything moving in the right direction but I have been super uncomfortable since about 1pm today. My stomach muscles (or uterus?) are super sore and I feel like I'm having pressure waves (contractions) A LOT. Which is creating a lot of pressure and I'm feeling very crampy and even uncomfortable in my lower back...

I'm just trying to go about my day like normal though because I don't want to get myself all worked up for nothing. I plan on going to tour the hospital birth center section tomorrow with DH too.

Today we went and watched my sister practice again and my brother is also one of the coaches so I got DH take this picture of me, my brother, my sister and Kostas Smile

Kostas was also being very lovey to Cricket while we were there too Smile

Hopefully all the discomfort today has been moving stuff in the right direction for when I am officially in labor! Smile

Well, got some more stuff checked off the list in terms of being ready for baby! We went and saw the birthing center section of the hospital today. The labor tub is AMAZING! I sooo want to "accidentally" birth in that tub! I also have the numbers I need programmed into my phone and my hospital bag packed. Now I just need DH to help me get the final 2 Hypnobabies tracks on my iPhone for birthing!

DH is here now and wants baby to wait a while because he's "enjoying his vacation" LOL. I get where he's coming from but he is not uncomfortable 80% of the time...

I haven't been feeling as much pressure or pressure waves today but I am definitely still feeling more going on than a couple days ago. I am super tired tonight too so I am going to bed early! (Compared to yesterday.) Woohoo!

Oh, and at the hospital Kostas saw the big labor tub and whispered to me "Is that where you are going to have the baby?" with a big smile on his face! It was so cute. I showed him a neat waterbirth video a couple weeks ago that he thought was amazing and has ever since told me that I should birth the baby in a tub just like that Smile

That is so cute what Kostas said about the tub! Hopefully he's on to something and you will get your "oops" in the tub birth. Smile Glad your hubby is around. We had the same thing with my last birth- DH arrived when I was just past 38 weeks. We really wanted the baby to come sooner than later, except DH was like, "but it would be ok if the baby waited a few days so I can just relax a little!"
