It started with contractions on Wed night. They were definitely there but no increase in intensity or frequency so I took some tylenol and gravol, suggested by my midwife at our last appointment, and managed to get a bit of sleep.
Thursday during the day i was still having contractions so I asked my mom to go shopping with me "just in case" so I could get a few last minute things.
Thursday evening things started again but it was like the night before. After the kids went to bed DH blew up the birthing pool and I called my mom to let her know that I might need her to help with the kids at some point. I figured that because we were prepared, it would be a false alarm.
I decided to take a bath because I was starting to get uncomfortable. I had also been in contact with my doula to tell her that I might need her at some point. I tried to get to bed but it didn't help. At about 2:00 I got into the bath again. It helped with my back quite a bit but I still thought at that point that it might not really be happening. At 3:00ish I texted my doula and told her that I needed her to come help with pain management. Shortly after that I woke up DH because I wanted someone to sit with me.
I laboured in our family room and in the birthing pool (which we put in the toy area of the family room....lol). Contractions were getting stronger and closer together but no definite pattern.
My mom came to pick up the kids at 7:30 and took them to her place for the day. They both came downstairs to say goodbye...luckily in between contractions. It was cute to see how curious they were about me in the birthing pool.
Contractions were getting more and more intense and by 7:45am(ish) we decided to call the Midwives. When they heard that the contractions weren't coming as often but were intensifying they said they would get there asap.
We thought that we may have been calling prematurely but apparently this can be a sign of baby coming soon for some women.
The midwives arrived at 8:30 (I think), set up and checked me. I was 8cm dilated. I was in bed and things were getting really really intense. I decided to go back downstairs and get into the birthing tub again. That's where things got serious....lol I actually said "holy F*ck" during a contraction. At that point my student midwife came over and said that she could tell there was a change in my contractions (I wonder why....lol) and that I should tell them when I needed to push. That happened pretty darn fast!
My body just started pushing and I yelled "he's coming"! I think I pushed for about 5 minutes and then he was here @ 9:42am!
I joked with the midwives saying that they got off easy because they had a whole night sleep, time to eat breakfast and were home for a late lunch! lol
It was so nice to be at home. I showered and jumped into my own bed after everything was done. My mom brought the kids over for a quick visit and then DH, Oliver and I had a nice long nap together. It was perfect
