Hmm... We might talk about names a couple times while I'm pregnant. My mom comes up with a gazillion. I think about it a little. DH thinks about it a little. Baby is born. We deal with what needs dealing with. Then a couple days (or weeks) later, when we have time, we talk about names... We also both like more traditional names, but with a 'nature' bent.

This time Forrest Reed was a name that I liked, and my dad liked (rarely part of the conversation) for Leo, but felt it was too close to Reed's passing to be without expectations at the time. So Leo got called Leo instead. He got the middle name Spencer which I've always liked, since Skyler chose that too (I even named an old cat Spencer) The name stuck with me, though, for the past 2 years and I was always a little sad that we didn't go with it. Then when Forrest arrived, and he completely fit the name (from my perspective), I just had to work on DH!

I wanted it with only 1 'r' though on Forrest, because I dislike kids having to learn 2 separate spellings for the same word. No big deal, though. As for getting DH's agreement, he liked the name very much but is very concerned about the "Forrest Gump" connotation, particularly "Run, Forrest, Run!!!". But really, a name is a name, and I pointed out to him that he will yell "Run, Forrest, Run!" at some point because he'll play soccer, or run track, or something, so he'd better get over it. Oh well. I think it's far enough from the movie (1994), and Forrest Gump isn't a bad character by any means. I mean how many decent 20+ year olds are going to make fun of a kid's name?

LOL - I've often thought the same thing.

I dropped my mother off at the airport this morning, and DH went out of town for the day. Leo has not been acting himself and has slept most of the day waking up crying (not like him). It seems his feet hurt too, or something. Can't figure out what.

Just gave him some juice (had to carry him to the kitchen),he wanted a cheese string, then he sat outside for a while, then he wanted me to take him to the toilet (pooped and almost fell asleep), and now he's back on the couch with a blanket. I carried him the whole way (not like him). I did get some tylenol into him, and tried to get some cal-mag... would think growing pains, except fpr the exhaustion, and teething except for the foot soreness...

Sarah, "Run, Forrest, Run!!!" will happen, but for all the right reasons. It is a fine loving and encouraging line for everyone.
I love his name and am happy you both do too. The time was right!
Forrest is a family name, but Forrest Reed is his alone.
Hearing Ivy cooing his name is still ringing in my ears!

that's really weird about Leo, I hope he starts feeling better quickly! I woke up this morning to pregnancy like muscle cramps. It happens when I've had sugary foods, which I did yesterday and now I'm paying for it. Maybe he's got some muscle cramping for some reason. Mine always happens in my legs and feet. Hopefully the extra sleep for him will help!

I love the new baby's name. I have heard Forrest as a name several times and I personally never think of Forest Gump unless I actually hear Forest Gump together. The name Forrest to me doesn't have near as much meaning to the movie without putting Gump after Forest (if that makes any sense). You don't even need the first name Forest to have someone say "run forest run" to you, all you really have to be doing is running for someone to yell it out to you LOL! And yeah, he's going to be so far removed from the movie that it won't matter, his friends won't get the connection because they'll likely never have seen the movie. And hey, at least it's a good wholesome character!!!!

I know you had to give up some of what you wanted in your birth to get your pictures but I'm so jealous. I wish I had had enough time or mental ability to call my birth photographer to get over here the morning I had Noah. She and I had worked out a great deal on the pictures (she's a friend of mine as well) and I was really looking forward to having pictures from this birth. I'm so sad. DH got ONE picture, that's it, ONE! Granted I had him really busy and he's TERRIBLE at thinking about taking pictures. I actually had to be the one to tell him to grab my phone and snap a picture when Noah was JUST born.

My first thought upon hearing Forrest wasn't Gump but Forrest Whitaker, the actor. If someone who was a teenager when Forrest Gump came out doesn't immediately jump to it, then kids in this upcoming generation won't.

That's good to hear! Skyler LOVES Forrest Gump, so when we told him he immediately quoted a million lines and I immediately thought "Oh! No!" and thought that DH was right about the Forrest Gump comments... I hope Skyler gets over it soon!

In the meantime, nursing is going better. The right side is fine, and practically bullet proof (i.e. Forrest can latch on by himself and after a few suck all is fine), the left, not so much. I have discovered, however, a position that is painless on the left side - I just have to sit up instead of side lying - which makes sleeping tough - but then I never figured that out until Reed was about 3 months old, so I could probably deal with it!

As for Leo, he got a high fever last night, we watched it periodically (got up and checked him), got temperatures everywhere from 103.8 to 90.2, decided we really should have a thermometer THAT WORKS. This morning, however, he woke up and wanted to have yogurt and cheese and a banana right away, asked to use the toilet, and was pretty chipper. He's tired, but seems to be on the mend. Odd about the foot thing, though.

    Sarah,
I am glad that the conference worked out and you stayed warm. BF-ing is usually difficult the first 3 weeks , even with previous experience, the nipples have to get used to it again. I hope it keeps improving!
I love that both boy's names pay tribute to their older brother. I was hoping that one of your boys would have Reed in their name. I think Forrest Reed is a strong, beautiful name.
As for surviving without Nana... things will fall into place. Ivy will help with entertaining Leo, you will learn to do it as you did before... things may get hectic, it may get messy- as Janel said, but eventually things will improve!
I hope Leo feels better fast!

Leo took a 4hnap this afternoon and has been chirpy and happy. It's wonderful! Right now both Ivy and Leo are playing on the exercise trampoline in the basement, and we haven't heard a squawk for about 30mins! I love it when they play nicely together! I say this, particularly, because Ivy has been acting up quite a bit since Forrest was born. I've had to establish "marshal law" because she blatantly ignores everything I seem to ask her unless I actually get up and make her. She used to be so helpful and chirpy so this is rather difficult to deal with. Now, Leo is copying the defiance as well. So we're doing the "do it the first time I ask or you go to your bedroom". Now if I go to stand up both kids run to do what I ask. Don't know if this is better (doing things out of fear), or if there is a better way. I hope things settle down soon and Ivy and Leo are back to their helpful, happy, selves.

Tomorrow we leave for a weekend of annual general meeting for the folk festival that we help organize. We will be there for the long weekend. Tomorrow we also have a midwife appointment for our 2 week (2day) checkup! I'm betting he's over 7lb easily (he was back to 6lb10oz at 1 week), but we'll see. It's been really nice to see him more alert the past 2 days.

You have just described my house at the moment!!!! Clara is OUT OF CONTROL and Grady is following her in the defiance (my ages are reversed from you but it's the girl that's the leader out of my 2 even though she's the younger one). I feel like I've been threatening so much lately. Clara waits until I'm sitting down nursing Noah and then just goes bat sh!t crazy. I'm ready for Noah's feedings to get a little more spaced out so I can get back a bit of control around here.

I just had a long post that disappeared... UGH

Let's see if I can retype.

Had another 3-day camping weekend last weekend for the Annual General Meeting of the music festival that we help organize. This past year was resounding success, and the most profitable by far. We earned enough money to (we hope) pay for the construction of a new main stage - something that is desperately needed considering our current main stage is bout 20 years old and is made from a couple truck beds, some containers, and a tarp. This is also hugely surprising to us since the 35yo fair (next year) only broke even for the first time about 3-4 years ago, and we've had huge debts to pay off since then.

    more later - baby crying.
