    Default Favourite Books

Kelly, you've done a lot of threads to liven up the board, I thought I'd add one.

    What are your favourite books:

    1. Of the year? (so anything read so far in 2011)

    2. Within the last couple years?

    3. Of all time?

    4. Favourite series?

    5. Favourite book from within a series? (may be, but doesn't have to be, from your favourite series)

    6. Favourite Non-Fiction?

    7. Favourite Genres?

    8. Favourite Children's books?

    9. Favourite Adaption of a Book to a Movie?

    10. Favourite character?

I know that you're probably like me, with only a few minutes at a time usually to come online, so feel free to answer just a couple at a time, whatever you can think of and have time for. They're numbered so you can come back and answer others at other times. Maybe that will help us get this board going a bit! Also, we can come back and answer again if answers change - - #1 could change a lot, or you might remember a book later you'd forgotten about that you liked more than the answer you wrote.

Also, feel free to add new numbers for people to answer. When I see them I'll add them to the original list. Have fun!

    Here are some of mine:

    1. Hmmm...I have a few I really enjoyed this year, not sure what would stand out most. Maybe "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal". Although I also loved "Room" by Emma Donoghue and "The Morality of Animals" by Dale Peterson.

    2. "The Book of Negroes" by Lawrence Hill (In the US is called "Someone Knows My Name") and "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel were huge faves.

    More later!

    Awesome thread, Stephanie!

    What are your favourite books:

    1. Of the year? (so anything read so far in 2011)
My favorite read so far this year was Beautiful Creatures! Loved the characters and can't wait for book 3 later this year!

    2. Within the last couple years? I loved The Help by Kathryn Stockett and The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins

    3. Of all time? That is terribly hard. I always say Gone With the Wind, in reality though I've only read it once, so I'm not sure it should hold that spot. There are only a few books that I've read multiple times. I think I'll have to give favorites and not just one.
    In no particular order:

    The Giver
    Midwives by Chris Bohjalian
    The Red Tent
    Hunger Games series
    Twilight series
    The Thirteenth Tale
    The Help
    Wait Till Helen Comes
    Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas
Caster Chronicles (Beautiful Creatures, Beautiful Darkness)

    4. Favourite series? Hunger Games & Twilight. Caster Chronicles is way up there too!

    5. Favourite book from within a series? (may be, but doesn't have to be, from your favourite series) I liked Twilight from the Twilight series and Hunger Games is my favorite from the Hunger Games series.

    6. Favourite Non-Fiction? I really don't read much in the way of non-fiction.

    7. Favourite Genres? I just enjoy fiction in gerneral. I do tend to read quite a bit of YA, and a great deal of it seems to be paranormal. I also tend to enjoy books with strong female protagonists.

    8. Favourite Children's books? Guess How Much I love You
    The Giver

    9. Favourite Adaption of a Book to a Movie? Favorite is hard, but I can tell you two least faves! I hate Twilight and The Lightning Thief. Both could have been done so much better. I did like the movie adaptation of The Time Traveler's Wife. Gone With the Wind is one that comes to mind as well.

    10. Favourite character?
    In recent reads:
Katniss Everdeen & Cinna in Hunger Games
Alice Cullen in the Twilight series
Minny and Abilene in The Help

Scarlett O'Hara - Gone With the Wind

Adding a few more to my list: (I decided on a new post so you would know it was updated)

    3. Of all time?
This one is definitely tough, I agree. I'm going to have to come back to it.

    4. Favourite series?
Oh, but there are so many, lol.
*The Narnia Series - An all-time fave for sure.
*Twilight - Putting the hype aside, I really did enjoy this series, and read it voraciously. I have to honestly put it in with my faves, even if it means my husband teases me incessantly, LOL.
*The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy (the trilogy in five books, lol). Another all-time fave.
*The Griffin and Sabine series by Nick Bantok. If you haven't read it, READ IT!
*Shopaholic Series -- A guilty pleasure. I LOVED the most recent book so much.

Honorable mentions to The Hunger Games Trilogy and the Clan of the Cave Bear series - although I haven't finished that one.

    5. Favourite book from within a series? (may be, but doesn't have to be, from your favourite series)
Narnia - - I always loved The Magician's Nephew. Not sure why!
Twilight - - Breaking Dawn. So much happened, it was crazy!
Griffin and Sabine - - Hard to choose. Probably the first one, just because it was the first and it's so incredibly unique.
Hitchhikers' Guide - - Probably the first one.
Shopaholic - - Definitely Mini Shopaholic!!

    6. Favourite Non-Fiction?
Two books by Peter Hessler: Oracle Bones and Country Driving. Fascinating yet hilarious.

    7. Favourite Genres?
Historical Fiction and Memoirs are favourites, Young Adult and Chick Lit are guilty pleasure favourite, but I could probably come up with a book I've loved from just about every genre.

    More another time!

It's so much fun to read your choices Kelly! The Giver is on my to-read, but I'm really looking forward to it seeing how many of your lists it made. The Thirteenth Tale and The Help were awesome books, and I have been recommending them all over the place, LOL.

I hated the Twilight movie compared to the book too. I did not like the feel they gave the movie, and I don't know if it was the acting, directing, or a combination, but the main characters did not do it justice. I liked some of the other actors they chose, but I think it could have been done so much better.

Looking forward to the Hunger Games movie, but I am wondering how they'll do with that one??

Love reading your choices too! I just read The Giver a couple of years ago for the first time. Can't believe I'd never read it before. Should be on school reading lists for sure!

Initially, I didn't mind the Twilight movie, as much as I did after seeing the second and third. I think it is that I realized fully how much better it could have been. Of course 2 & 3 had much better budgets, etc.

I'm also looking very forward to The Hunger Games movie. I thought the casting of Lenny Kravitz for Cinna was brilliant. I was a little perplexed at the casting of Katniss, but after seeing clips of the actress in Winter's Bone (or something like that), I think they made a nice choice. I just really hope they stick as close to the story as possible, and then they can't go wrong!

    8. Favourite Children's books?
I have so many! For older children, I love most books by Roald Dahl and also The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. So many more, but those are definitely some top ones. For picture books, the Olivia books are great. My all-time favourite Dr. Seuss book is "The Sneeches and Other Stories". If you have little kids you HAVE to get it. I love all four of the stories soooo much, and they make me laugh. The last story is about "...a pair of pale green pants with nobody inside them." The main character keeps running into them. My favourite line: "I said I do not fear these pale green pants with nobody inside them. I said and said and said these words. I said them...but I lied them." LOL!

    9. Favourite Adaption of a Book to a Movie?

I think they did the Harry Potter movies really well. And The Princess Bride is a fantastic movie. The humour was very well done. Mandy Patinkin is the best, lol.

    10. Favourite character?

Pope Joan was a fascinating character, especially since she could have been a real person! (Great book, highly recommended.) The main character in Godmother: The Secret Cinderella Story was very interesting, and I really cared about her. Another book you HAVE to read! I loved Ella in Ella Minnow Pea.

So many good books, so little time! LOL!

Ok, here are some new questions: (Note I now write "books" instead of "book". It's so hard to come up with just one, lol!)

    1. Favourite books to read over and over again.

    2. Books you didn't expect to love - - but you did!

    3. Favourite guilty pleasure books - - the ones you get made fun of for reading but still loved!

    4. Book you are currently the most tempted to buy.

    1. Favourite books to read over and over again. I very rarely read a book more than once because there is always something that I haven't read that I want to. I have read/listened to all of the Twilight series multiple times. Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn a couple of times. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair a couple of times (mainly for History courses in HS and college though.)
There are a few books I'd like to read again, and plan to one of these days. They include: Gone With the Wind, Hunger Games series, Midwives, The Thirteenth Tale, The Giver, I know there are more, but those are the main ones I can think of.

    2. Books you didn't expect to love - - but you did! Most recently, The Luxe series. They are much better than I expected. I also really loved Beautiful Creatures and Beautiful Darkness. I hated to finish both of those, and am dying to get my hands on Beautiful Chaos later this year when it comes out. I read Hunger Games because my daughter recommended it, I really didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. A Thousand Splendid Suns surprised me, because I couldn't even finish The Kite Runner by the same author. Twilight is another I didn't expect to like, but loved. Read it after a friend sent it to me. I could really go on here because I've been surprised by a lot of books.

    3. Favourite guilty pleasure books - - the ones you get made fun of for reading but still loved! Twilight series. The Luxe are pretty guilty pleasureish too because they are kind of like Gossip Girl gone historical. Really I feel a little odd everytime I make a bee line for the kids section of my local library, as that is where the YA stuff is. Maybe I should just take my kids along, then it wouldn't look quite as odd. LoL

    4. Book you are currently the most tempted to buy.
    Wither by Lauren DeStefano
The Midwife's Confession by Diane Chamberlain & The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes (my library and audible don't have either of her books)
