I put The Pearl on hold yesterday and started listening to The Giver while I was at school waiting for PTO and TP was in my car.
I'm really intrigued by this book -- what an interesting concept. I can't wait to see what happens!!
Anyone else read it? It's also YA.
I'm on tape 4 of 4 now, only a few more chapters to go. I've enjoyed it thus far, but something that was just revealed was very disconcerting. I was in tears listening this afternoon. I'll update when I'm finished. Trying of course not to give any spoilers.
Would love to discuss this one with someone!!!!!
Did you know there's a sort of 'trilogy'?: The Giver, Gathering Blue and Messenger. I haven't read the other two books, but Samuel has read Gathering Blue for Battle of the Books.
*edited to add--oops, you do know...I just read the other post you wrote in the 'what are you reading thread'. *

If you do decide to read it again, I'd love to do a chat. I found out Gathering Blue and The Messenger were part of the "loose" trilogy when I was trying to find out more about the ending of the Giver. It really could have been interpreted a couple of different ways. After finding out some characters reappear in The Messenger, it seems the ending was the more optimistic of my two possible interpretations. Which I'm really pleased about of course!
Just lurking, but Kelly, The Giver is one of my FAVORITE books! It's been a couple years since reading it, but I really loved the message. Anyway, I hope you like it!
I've taught this book 3 times to my 6th grade language arts students and once to 5th graders. I miss it! Now I teach 7th grade reading strategies for kids who don't meet the state standard so I don't get to read the cool novels.
From a teaching perspective it is an excellent novel. I love how Lois Lowry weaves in new vocabulary and uses and reuses the words and even talks about word meaning (aka precision of language).
I want to pick up a copy of this book. I read it in 7th grade because I remembered a girl in 5th grade reading it and I loved it. I don't remember much about it(other than the fact that I loved it) so I am going to have to get a copy.

I just finished it tonight. I had to get our library's copy because ours is...Elsewhere.
I loved it all over again. If you want to discuss it, I'm game. It's summer, my husband is gone for 12 days, and I have quiet evenings ahead of me once kids are in bed.
I'm out of school now, so I'm basically available anytime during the week. My weekends are booked though starting next weekend through about Mid-late July.
