I need input, pretty please, with cherries on top!!

I was wondering if 2 months is too long for selections, should we go back to doing a monthly selection -- or considering our busy lives, should we leave it at 2 months?

I'd also like to set up a permanent Chat time -- it would be at the end of a month or two, depending on how long for each selection. So I need input about days and times. I'd like to make it as accessible to the most readers as possible.

I also need some input on the voting/selection process. Are you pleased with how the last couple of months have gone? I have opened it up for suggestion, then ran the poll, and the winning book was chosen. For the next selection I automatically put down any books that were voted for on the last poll, but opened it up to suggestion also. I didn't know if that led to too many books/choices, or if that worked well for everyone.

Basically, I just need input and ideas for how to make this a place where you want to visit, feel a part of the selection process, and want to join in on reading and discussions.

TIA,

I know that for me I can only commit to every other month... but would not mind monthly if you don't mind that I would not be able to make EVERY time.

Fridays are best for me in chat... Or some time like Wed. or Thurs.

Personally, I think two months is too long, but I am a really fast reader. By the time the second month ends, I will usually have forgotten all about the book.

But I don't think my input matters too much, since I figure a good majority of the selections I probably won't read. My reading tastes don't run quite with the group, and so I figure maybe every other selection would be something that I'd join in on.

maybe if there are monthly selections there will most likely be at least 1 or 2 that you would like....

Also, without your input it is hard to find a book that you would enjoy. We would love to hear what interests you and possibly implement it as a book of the month. Wink

We could try doing a monthly selection, and those who can make it, do, and those who can't, we can do a discussion thread specifically for that book.

I'd really like to get this board moving. I know there are a lot of readers on the site, and I also know there are a lot of lurkers who come by the board, but only a handful of regular posters.

Totally unrelated - that IMITREX ad with the headache monster is driving me nuts.

I almost prefer to NOT give my input because I'd rather drop in and see if what everyone decided on is something I'd like. I was the one who suggested "The Road" and apparently no one finished it because they thought it was too sad or depressing. I hate being the person who doesn't like anything or who doesn't do things the way everyone else does - that's why I stopped participating on many of the non-birth boards (photography, music, movies, etc). I know it's always a downer to have someone who doesn't like the things that everyone else does.

ALTHOUGH I was pleased to see that someone actually voted for the selection that I suggested. So that's cool. And I did vote for one of the others.

So the short answer is - yeah, I think a monthly suggestion would be better. That way there are more books to choose from, and a shorter time for those participating. Yeah, it means a shorter time in which to read the book, but instead of waiting two months, there's only one.

Also - I don't want anything to think I'm whining or complaining. After 30 years, I'm pretty used to being the oddball. I just wanted to explain how I felt.

I think going back to monthly selections will be a good idea!

I'm one who could not finish The Road. It was just too close to what I was raised to believe the "end of the world" will be like, and that's a topic I've never been comfortable with. I'm overly uncomfortable with it, to be honest. So it wasn't necessarily that book, I wouldn't be able to read anything like it. Just a personal hang up, and I probably should have made that more clear. Lol I also think it had to do with when I was trying to read it. I was on vacation, so it just wasn't one of those kinds of reads. I think the book you suggested sounds wonderful, and I know you've given me some great Hoffman suggestions, so I really do appreciate your input here. I know you didn't post to whine or complain, but I did really want to clarify the situation with The Road, at least where I was concerned.

I'd still love some input on how we might let everyone have a chance to suggest a book. I know when we did the short-lived club on September, each person suggested a book, and it went in order from the suggestions. We could try something like that instead of the voting. I know doing it that way, I ended up reading a couple of books I probably wouldn't have otherwise, and really enjoyed them.

That is a good idea. My best friend suggested that when we were talking about books the other night.

RE: The Road. It was a hard book to read, it was very visual and graphic. I can definitely see where you're coming from with that.

We could go ahead and do the current vote from the poll, and then use the other suggestions for our next selections

Ex. March - the winner of the vote
then the rest would just come in the order they were suggested.

ETA: Except the two I suggested, from the last poll, could be split up

Does that work for everyone?

That works for me.

Sounds wonderful to me!!! Maybe you can sticky the selections in the order or months they are coming and a link. Just an idea.

This is also a good idea because if we know what we are reading way in advance, it'll let us not lose the opportunity to pick up books when we see them. Say you're at a yard sale and you spy a copy of "Snow Angels" that someone's selling for a buck.

I really like this idea.

Once we see which book wins for March, I'll do the sticky for the remaining books, in the order which they were suggested (except the two I suggested from the other poll, which I'll separate)

ETA: Actually I'll probably just add it to the list of the Previous Selections -- and make it an Upcoming and Previous Selections thread. We'll actually be good to go until the end of October, when we'll need to do a selection November and December.
