I think I mentioned a while back that I was going to start a book club for my oldest son. Well, we got it off the ground and I wanted to share how the first meeting/discussion went! The first book they chose was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (which my son has now read 3 times  ). Although it was a very small group, the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves. We started off by doing a word scramble with a list of names and words relevant to Harry Potter. We followed this up with a hunt for the Elder Wand (courtesy of my husband, who painstakingly hid clues all over the house and yard for the kids to follow). Then we settled down with some snacks and butter beer (aka root beer floats) and talked about the book. I had them each make a brief entry in a book journal, which I am hoping will be a fun way for them to make a record to look back on of all the books they read and discuss together as a group.
So, it was a lot of fun, and I am already excited about the next one! The kids picked What the Dickens by Gregory MacGuire (he wrote Wicked, which is an adult book, but this one is geared towards kids). This time I am going to try to read the book too (I did not read the HP book).
