Canada Post Strike

Anyone else having frustrations about the strike?

I'm from the states and have been waiting on my immigration (permanent residence) to go through for a couple years now. I'm in the last stage and should be receiving my letter from immigration any day now. Well, I guess not now!

Originally Canada Post said they would be delivering all official government mail. I guess now it's just pension/family allowance/child tax credit checks (which my kids aren't eligible for since I'm American even though they're Canadian)

Sorry about the vent... I don't usually complain, but man! I haven't had my driver's license for a year because my old one expired and BC won't give me a new one without my immigration being done. sigh.

Okay, I'm done now! Smile

I'm not too terribly affected right now. We have a lot(almost all) of our bills set up to be paid on the MC automatically, so I just have to remember the garbage. And if I forget and they stop picking up, the dump is 5 mins. down the road.

My child tax is automatically deposited, the only thing I get from the gov't is my daycare benefit, but I guess that will keep coming? Who cares. It's only $100.

Ummm, that's harshly dumb that you don't get $$ for your kids when their dad is Canadian. Were they born here? Sometimes I swear the gov't has their heads so far up their bums.....

Can you get the immigration papers couriered to you? I tend to take for granted that I live so close to the border, and a lot of times we have stuff sent to a postal outlet just across the line if US companies won't ship to Canada(lame!!).

Oh, I'm RIGHT pissed.

I still use plenty of snail mail. We get our bills through the mail and I mail cheques to pay them. I also get my child tax cheques through the mail.

The system is so screwed up and it's the citizens who pay the price. I'm livid today.

 I think it's ridiculous. The government was quick to say they'd legislate Air Canada back to work after one of their unions went on strike this week... I hope they're just as quick for Canada Post. It's a little more of an "essential service" than Air Canada IMO.

Elizabeth, I think that's crazy your kids don't get the benefit... unless... does dh claim them on income tax or not? I'm just wondering if he doesn't, if that could be the reason :dontknow:

My "Harper money" (the $100) is automatically deposited... though after July I won't get it at all since ds turns 6 next month Sad I know it's not a lot, but hey... $100 in my pocket is better than in the government's for me Wink

My "baby bonus" isn't though... I did go online and do the stuff to have it automatically deposited but it's likely too late for this month's cheque. I hope they do deliver it... we're going to Toronto at the end of the month and was hoping to use some of that towards it (though I hope the strike is over by then!) I've also got claims I have to send in for dh's benefits as well as a form for WSIB... not urgent, but getting reimbursed from the benefits would be nice asap LOL

ETA: Jordan posted at the same time... I'll just give a big ol' DITTO and ITA to her post too! I also get all my bills via mail, though I do usually pay them directly at the bank.

UPDATE: Government says they're going to give them the 48 hours notice required to legislate back to work http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/06/15/canada-post-strike.html So hopefully it is short-lived.

That would be great!

To answer your questions about the kids, DS was born in Washington (Bellingham) but he has his Canadian citizenship. DD was born in Canada. When we applied for the Child Tax Credit, they told us we weren't eligible because I'm not Canadian and my husband is a man. I guess it usually goes to the woman in the relationship. Oh, and dh does claim them on his income tax, and they both have sin numbers.

We're trying to get it sorted, but Service Canada is a BEAST to work with.

Does that mean if you had married a woman, then she could recieve it?

Usually it goes to whoever has custody, and therefore gets to claim them on their taxes. Isn't it kind of the same thing? If your DH is the only parent with Canadia citizenship(for now) then he should be eligible. What if you were deceased? He would get it then, what's the diff?

Stupid government.
