Charters! Come to your first Weekly Meeting! (12/23-12/30)

Our first meeting is called to order! I brought peppermint mocha lattes and white chocolate biscottis.

This week's topic for discussion: In your experience with charting, which do you think is THE most accurate way to pinpoint ovulation, and why?

1. Temps
2. OPKs
3. Cervical mucous
4. Cervical position
5. Ovulation pain or other symptoms (describe)
6. Other (specify)

(PS: I know it's a busy time for everyone right now with it being Christmas, so just come to the meeting whenever you can!)

I'll go ahead and start the discussion with my answer, which is... 2. Temps.
For me, temps are always the most reliable source for pinpointing ovulation down to the day.
That being said, temps can fluctuate for various reasons, AND.... there are times when you might be sick and running a fever right before or around the time of ovulation, so for that reason, I think it's important to also use temping in combination with OPKs for your best chance of pinpointing the day.

Mmmmmmmmmmm....I love peppermint mocha! Brought my homemade Christmas shortbreads to add to the party. Smile

I also go with temps for the most accurate indication of O, at least in my own case. I will get +OPKs telling me that it is coming, and CM changes in advance as well. But the only sign that tells me for sure that I have O'd in the temp rise. You really do need a combination of indicators to really pinpoint O, but without temp being one of them it really is difficult to be accurate.

Peppermint mocha! Yum! Here is some peppermint bark to share as well!

I vote for a combo of temps and CM. My CM is the best for indicating when to grab that hubby and get busy, and the temp rise is the best way to tell O. I haven't had any luck with OPK's, I had straight negatives the times I tried to use them....so I just save the money to spend on FRER's. Hehe.

I just started charting again this summer after some time off. For me its now temps and OPKs when I can catch the OPK as my surge is short. Ive been on clomid for a number of cycles and it changes my CM so its not a good indicator.

Hi ladies! I've taken the past couple months off from charting (the first on purpose, the second because my DD ran off with my thermometer lol) but I'll be back on once AF shows.

For me, I think it would be temps because I have a super short LH surge normally (yet three days of positives this cycle... not sure what's going on there because I wasn't temping!!!) and very little CM. Boo. So, temps it is.

ETA: I also wanted say hi, Jean. Smile Missed you and hope you are doing okay. And Mary, love the new siggy pic!

Thanks for coming to the meeting, ladies! Hope we still have more coming Smile I'm going to try and do it every Monday from here on out... if for some reason I can't one week and haven't done it by Tuesday morning, someone else is welcome to start it for me if you can think of a good discussion question!

We're not even ttc right now and I'm still charting, only because I like knowing when to expect AF. Boring, I know. I'm not using OPKs, though, that would be silly. Just temping (more so around O time) and checking CM. This month it will be interesting to see if O can be pinpointed, because I was sick with a fever for a few days, and now that I've been better for a couple of days, my temp dipped low yesterday, then jumped high again, but no EWCM yet--at least not as far as I could tell--so I doubt I O'd yet.

Jean - It IS good to see you again, I was thinking the same thing when I saw your post last night. Smile

Alison - I like peppermint bark, too. Yum-o.

Danielle - Does your CM dry up more with Clomid? Seems like I remember someone saying that somewhere.

Elizabeth - Thanks for the compliment on my new siggy pic. I just loved how I was able to catch her big hair flying up in the air, it just accentuates the fact that she has SO MUCH hair. LOL. I'm going to replace that pic soon, though, with one from Christmas, probably of her riding on her new scooter that she loves so much. That is odd that you got 3 positive OPKs. What brand are you using?

For me, I get the CM a few days ahead of Oing, and then I get pain on one side to let me know that its time. I also do keep a chart, but I only post on when my last period was so I can expect to O, and its always been right on. This cycle I also used OPK which was also on the day that I felt the pain.

I temped and found that was fairly accurate so I never used OKPs (oh and I'm cheap too) Smile The main inaccuracy I found with it was when I had mouth breathing or woke up early. For getting up early (kids, bathroom) I usually took my temp at that time and then when I got up at my normal time. I found that as long as I was laying still/sleeping for an hour, I was at my lowest temp no matter what the time. For mouth breathing, I found that if I woke up and my mouth was really dry, if I could get some saliva in there easily, my temp was also fairly accurate.

CM I found that I rarely had EWCM, even at O time. Of the 14 months I've charted I would say I had it 3 times at O time and 2 times during the 2WW. At O time I did tend to have increased discharge though.

Never did cervical position and had nothing reliable as other symptoms.

My cycle is extremely regular. When coming off of BC, my O date shifts a day over 3 months and my luteal phase extended 1 day over about 6 months. My O temp shift is consistantly 0.4-0.6 C . If my cycle was not as regular I might have started looking at other things.

Thanks for your input, Kate and Danielle Wink

By the way, I just did a "Silly Question of the Day" on the main page of this board, too, so be sure and check it out. I'll try to do something new and interesting every day, or nearly every day, so be sure to check the board often!

Thanks Mary and Elizabeth! It's good to be back, although most of the time I'm still just lurking. Doing ok...just waiting for NO lines (never thought I'd be looking forward to that!) and a normal AF, and then seeing where we go from there.

Danielle - I'm SO excited about your IUI... I've got everything crossed for you!

Hello everyone....I'm a little late to the meeting but I'm here!

Temping and checking CM are my best bet. OPKs aren't very accurate for me since I tend to get false positives ALL. THE. TIME! I like to check my CP too but CM is my number one indicator that ovulation is approaching and I like to temp to confirm.

Yaaay Jina, so glad you came! Smile You're not late, it's one of those informal type meetings where you come when you can during that week! I agree, CM is an important factor, too. In fact, in the absence of doing OPKs (like now since we aren't really ttc), CM helps confirm O'ing for me, though this month my CM acted a little weird. I didn't have the EWCM that I normally do.

Temps, for sure! But for me, I've found oral temping has too many errors (all human) so vaginal temping.

My last cycle I temped vaginally and it made a HUGE difference.

My CM was always kinda 'questionable' for me to really determine and i never really got EW, only really watery. I will say OPKs worked for me, too, but there is a learning curve and you really need to find the brand that works best for you.

Did I mention I totally miss you guys!! I loved charting...and stalking charts!!

Hey Christina! Miss you, too! Hope you'll keep checking in to see if there's something you can comment on, we'd love to have you. Looks like you are getting close to your due date, can't believe it! How are you feeling? (Sorry, I know you're probably getting that question a LOT right now, lol, but I really want to know how you're doing! Lol
