LATCH limit?

How do I find the LATCH weight limit for my car? It's not in the user's manual. Trying to decide whether to install the Frontier 85 with LATCH or seat belt. I would prefer LATCH but not if DS1 is close to the limit. I have an 01 Kia Sephia.

Lemme look it up.

My LATCH Manual says that if you put a child seat in the center back seat, to use the seat belt. The LATCH and tether limit is not stated. Standard is usually 40 or 48 pounds. Since it's not stated, I'd go for the seat that doesn't use LATCH.

Hope that helps.

Thanks:-) I'll install with the seat belt then. He's between 30 and 35 lbs so with the weight of the seat he'd be over limit in it soon, if not now. Crossing my fingers it installs okay!

I know this post is pretty old... but responding anyway.

If the vehicle manual does not state, then you assume 40 pounds. This does not mean car seat weight + kid weight = 40 pounds... just the kid weight, because the seat weight is already taken into account.

I believe most seats tell you to refer to your car manufacturer's latch maximum - so for the most part, you assume 40 pounds. Smile

Thx:-) I'd never done a seat belt install outboard but it was easier than I expected! I just had to pull the seat belt all the way out till it clicked then feed it back in to lock it tight. Wasn't bad at all!

Hi. Sounds like you got it just right. Pulling the seat belt all the way out locks it so that it will only tighten. Still, check your seat periodically to make sure it is still nice and tight. As a tech, I find that I most often get a better install with the seat belt as opposed to the LATCH system.
