Default Do you think it's possible my diapers are beyond hope?

So... after doing the oxy-vin and the Dawn strip... my diapers still stink. My diaper pail stinks. DD is still getting a red butt after wearing cloth at night.

I'm starting to feel like they are beyond hope...which kills me, because that is A LOT of money down the drain (at least 16 BG AIOs x $25... I just don't want to think about it!). I just don't know what to do anymore.

I did start putting DD in a sposie at night, and only doing the cloth during the day. The diaper pail still has an overnight dipe in it, which may be the cause of most of the stink. I don't know if just doing that will change the situation... but, needless to say... I'm just bumming.

I am washing my newborn prefolds right now, and decided to throw in the "baby" sized prefolds that I have and try them on DD... I have a feeling she won't like them just because of how bulky they will be compared to our AIOs and FLIPS. They are the Bummis prefolds (which I LOVE for newborn) but the "baby" size is meant to fit 15-40lbs... and DD is only 25lbs... so they are going to be huge on her, I just know it.

If anyone still uses prefolds on a toddler- what fold do you use? I'll try... but we'll see... if not, I think I have 24 pretty much never been used prefolds and a few covers that I might want to sell- useful for anyone that has a big baby!

I know a lot of people warn against this but I'm going to throw it out there because it helped me so much when my dipes had a case of the stinkies.... Have you tried to run a cycle using a bit of bleach? I used a small amount on my dipes when I noticed they were stinky and it wouldn't go away. I never noticed any ill effects from it. Also, have you tried good old vinegar? Dawn dish soap? those are a few other things I used in my dipes. I know vinegar is great for removing stinkies from a lot of things as well as dipes. But if you've got a real stink problem and dawn, vinegar, sun and extra rinses aren't taking care of I say try a splash of bleach. a splash won't hurt the elastic or the color as long as all the water is the machine already.
As far as PF's on a toddler, I just used the regular fold. (I never learned the various names of them) I wish you the best!

I was at one point using bleach regularly... I swear, I've tried everything.

Is it just at night where she's having the big problems? If so do disposables at night and keep with the cloth during the day. Earlier this week I switched Aiden to disposables at night. We've been battling random blisters that only pop up at night. I've stripped the diapers twice since moving here and I thought all was well but they just keep randomly popping up. I know it's not diet at this point (oranges do make it worse, but he's been avoiding orange stuff completely), so it has to be the diapers. He's fine during the day. It's just at night. I'm guess it's wetness staying on him despite what diaper I use and even adding an extra stay dry liner. So far so good with disposables, but it's only been a couple of days. He STTN, so no way no how am I waking him up to change his diaper in the middle of the night. That's like asking the kid to join a party.

We still regularly use prefolds. In fact since DS was 4 months old I've been using prefolds rated for 15-35 pounds. I did have to fold down the back and front both because it was too long, but hey he lived despite the bulk. At this point I just have to fold down just the back or front, not both. If you do the bikini twist it takes up some extra length that my favorite angel fold does not (though I do a more of a version of the angel lol). I like angel fold because for some reason DS likes to poop in prefolds, flats, and diapers with snap in inserts and never the diapers that are easier to clean.

I tried to move Beni into these bigger prefolds when she was 6 mos, and they were so bulky on her, I literally couldn't fit the whole diaper in the cover. It was ridiculous. That was when we moved to using the BG AIOs full time, and when we started having stink issues! Bah! So I guess we'll see how the prefolds fit now. Good to know you use them.

She seems to do ok in the diapers during the day, as long as I change her often enough (which is hard to gauge sometimes, because I think she holds it for a long time and so I feel like sometimes she can go a LOOOOONG time without being changed)... but it is the night diapers that are horribly stinky. I'm not 100% sure if the super stinky diaper pail is just due to the overnight diapers, or it's the diapers just sitting there for a few days.

I know it would be horribly wasteful, but I wish I could just start over, and only use hard-water detergent. Good thing I don't have money for that anyway, so it's not an option...

Yes, washing diapers more than every 2 days or so does result in more stink, especially if a closed pail is used. With all my morning sickness and such I've only been washing every 6 days and yes it reeks. After two days it's fine, but by that third day it's not so pleasant. We use a cheap garbage can with a "locking" lid and a pail liner. I'd like to leave it open, but DS takes it as an invitation to put everything in there. Ew. Overnight diapers by nature do have a smell with toddler IMO. I've tried flats folded in a pocket and even they stink and they obviously have no buildup they wash so cleanly.

I'd give prefolds a good try! You might be surprised by them.

I'd keep going with cloth during the day and just do sposies at night and see if that helps with the rash. Have you tried hand stripping your dipes, getting in there and scrubbing each one individually with Dawn and a soft brush to try and insure that they are in fact fully stripped and clean?

I sometimes use prefolds on my DD who is 23 months and 26ish pounds. I agree the bigger bummis ones are just too huge!! But, I do use the smaller size and just fold them in half and lay them in a cover. It works great! Sometimes poop gets on the cover, but oh well... Just toss the whole works in the laundry.

That really, really sucks about your diapers I haven't got any suggestions - It sounds like you've done everything known to man!

I was thinking as I washed yesterday do you have a laundry hygiene rinse available. We have canesten and dettol here both which are designed to go in the wash, and a lot of ladies on my cloth group swear by t least a capful in each nappy wash. It gets rid of nasties, I think helps with smell and might help with the rash.

I'm so sorry you're having these troubles. We still regularly use prefolds on Teagan. She's been in GMD brown edge prefolds since she was about 3 months old. They say they go from 20-35 lbs. They measure 15x17/18 inches. They fit her really well now at about 25 lbs. I'm able to put a OS Blueberry cover over them on the middle rise using an angel fold. They're bulkier than the Sunbabies we have but really barely so. Prefolds are bullet proof and I found that stink only really became a persistent thing in our house once we started using pockets with MF inserts. We also didn't really start using pockets until she was about a year, so maybe its just the "toddler stink".

Have you tried the prefolds on her yet? If they're larger than the GMDs I have, you can maybe try ordering a few GMDs to give them a try. A dozen M or L is just $30-$40.

Here are pics comparing the bulk of a L GMD versus a pocket. Green is a sunbaby. Blue denim is a L GMD under a Mother's Touch OS cover.
