Embarrassing story (and a question)

So today after my stroller strides class, I went to lunch with a group of the class moms. I tell a couple of them there about modern cloth diapers and show them one. During this Aiden decides he's done with lunch, so I start cleaning him up. He stands up and we discover he has peed through his diaper. :banghead: Yes, peed through the flat (it wasn't even all wet either) and THROUGH my Kawaii cover. Pants were clearly wet on the bottom of his bum (so it definitely hadn't leaked over the edges). I love the fit of the covers on Aiden and I've never had a problem with them, but apparently the PUL isn't so great anymore after months of use? Pretty sure they all think I'm nuts and are more determined than ever to keep using disposables. *sigh*

So since apparently my 2 Kawaii covers can't be trusted anymore, wondering what people's favorite covers are. We have a couple of Thirsties duo wraps size 2, but while they're really good I'm not in love with them. I also have one medium Thirsties cover and it's too big to fit over flats and prefolds (I use it over fitteds when I rarely use them). According to their website Aiden falls well within the range for the cover though (he's somewhere over 21lbs, and he's definitely been gaining weight recently). So looking for something else I should try! Biggrin

Oh no! Was he in the flats I sent you? Did he just miss the diaper entirely or did it just go right through?

I'm really liking my Blueberry covers right now. They fit Teagan really well, I've never had a leak, and they're cute.

Oooo. I don't know how I forgot they have covers. lol. I love my other Blueberries!

He was in a swaddlebees flat that I've used lots of times before. I don't know what happened other than the cover FAILED me. Big time.

The pul may just need resealing. Do you normally air dry them? It helps to dry them in the drier sometimes to reseal them. I dry on hot for about 20 minutes after washing if I'm getting some leaks. I haven't tried Kawiis though so I'm not sure if hot is ok for them. Sounds like it couldn't make it worse though.
ETA: I love BB covers too. Weehuggers are great and trim especially for trifolds (love flip organics in them). Coveralls are great over fitteds or nighttime. I don't use flats or prefolds folded other than trifolded but either would work.

Yeah, I've been drying everything in a dryer for over 2 months now. It was really weird to me how this happened when I've never had a single issue previously with them.

Is it *possible* that he actually spilled some liquid in his seat, and didn't leak through the diaper? That's happened to me a couple of times, where I thought she leaked but then realized her water bottle was upside down and empty...just a thought, since it was such a bizarre occurrence.

Also, I liked my Flip covers a lot.

I know that many CD mamas swear by this but I read that was a myth. I was having horrible leaking problems with our Kawaii's for a while and it was going straight through the TPU. I started looking into it and I remember being surprised to read that the idea that PUL needs to be "resealed" is not true. That PUL is actually made to get very hot w/o melting b/c it's used in hospital settings where they have to wash things in very hot water to sterilize. And that if you actually got the PUL hot enough to seal then it would actually just melt. (But a dryer cannot get that hot.) Anyway, like I said, many moms say they have to reseal their PUL so I was surprised to come across that information. I want to say it was even linked off of a CD site but I cannot say for sure now.

We went through a time where Jordan was leaking through her diapers constantly. (Mostly Kawaii pockets.) Not around the legs but through the diaper. I was pi$$ed at the Kawaii people b/c their customer service was HORRIBLE. I tried to get a number to call but they wouldn't give me one. Their email responses were slower than Christmas and they would ask questions I had specifically answered or accused me of having damaged the diapers. I eventually gave up which was probably what they wanted. I used to recommend Kawaii b/c they really are so well priced but my heart has changed a bit on that. I would rather point someone toward a company that will take care of their customers, even if they charge more. I'm also liking the idea of supporting WAHMs when I can.

Our answer to the problem is that it was temporary. I found other moms saying their kids went through this phase of peeing like a freaking horse and that their diapers kept failing. But, eventually, they grew out of it. I thought they were crazy. I mean, a forceful pee stage? Seriously? But, I've heard more and more moms running into this somewhere between 13 months to 18 months. And Jordan is still wearing her Kawaii's with no problems. I do use more hemp now but I know she even leaked with those some, just maybe not as much. I think our problem lasted about a month or two.

I totally get why you were embarrassed too. I really hate it when Jordan has a leak and someone is around to see it. Especially b/c I am the only one who uses CD and I have tried to talk them up so other will consider them as well. Makes you feel like a horses rear when you turn around and they've leaked. But leaks happen. They happen with cloth and they happen with sposies. Poop going up to your child's neck is no fun and I can say that has only happened with sposies with us! So pee is not as bad. But still not cool.

Have you looked around Hyena cart or Etsy? If you get on Diaperswappers then you might be able to get some WAHMs to spam you and some are running specials right now I think. Just a thought. Blueberry covers are great too! We had a few in our short lived fitted stage. (Goodmamas were not all they were hyped up to be IMO.) Wink

I can't say anything about the CD leaking. However, I do part time EC with DD and I can attest to the forcefull pee. When she goes on the potty, it often comes out with a lot of force. It is like she is working those muscles. There is also more of it at once. Only a few months ago, there would be a few table spoons of pee in the potty. Now, sometimes it is closer to a cup. I can only imagine what this would do to a cloth diaper. Her sposies can barely keep up.

No way he had spilled anything on him since he had been in a stroller without a sippy.

I've never had an issue with any of my other Kawaiis. I think this cover is just 'bad' now for whatever reason. Maybe his pee is more forceful and the cover is too cheap to keep up. I got a couple of Blueberry covers from their clearance page in a couple of days ago and I'm really liking them for DS. My son had a massive poop (one of the biggest in months) while in a flat and one of these covers kept it all in!

Kayla, I have heard that about it being a myth about resealing PUL, but haven't heard anything "official" about that before.

I've also had that happen on occasion. Too much too fast for the diaper to keep up. I've had leaks while praising my cd to non believers too, and while it's embarrassing, I know that even those that use sposies have an occasional leak.

I have had the same thing happen to me as I was bragging on CDing... Sad All I can say is I have a SUPER SOAKER! Sometimes he pees faster than EITHER diaper can soak it up... cloth or sposies... and it leaks out the sides. I have more poo leakage with sposies than I do cloth so much prefer cloth. Smile Perhaps you need to reactivate the PUL in the dryer???
