Back when we started CDing, we used Gdiapers a lot. I loved how convenient the whole cover/insert system was. Then when DD got more mobile/squirmy around four months, the inserts being against her skin irritated her and we switched to pockets. I had a thirsties duo wrap and thirsties hemp prefold but didn't use them until more recently after she did okay with going into the G's again.
Despite stripping and adjusting our detergent for our new house (hard water), the micro fiber inserts are having build up issues. I love the thirsties prefolds but the $8 a pop makes me cringe a little. I think they're worth it, but I'm curious what other prefolds (for trifolding or snapies) everyone likes for toddlers?
I hate trifolding, so I only snappi. DS is 24-25 pounds and I can still snappi premium prefolds (these premium and these standard). I do have to stretch the front out to make wings though. The JBN ones are longer than the CB's. Both are a bit long to be trifolding unless you do it by width which makes it pretty darn wide, at least IMO.
I've heard great things about Green Mountain Diapers and I think Erin uses those. When she gets bored being all productive at work, she'll probably chime in.
I'm bored now!
Holy frap! $8 a pop for a prefold!? That's INSANE. NO NO NO they are not worth that. You're paying for the thirsties brand name and nothing else. That's a complete gimmick unless they're lined with gold (which I don't think is very absorbent). Green Mountain prefolds are the very best (IMO, ) and are so much cheaper. If you're tri-folding and using covers or even just stuffing pockets with prefolds (not as effective really), you can probably get away with using size medium (red edge), which are $32/dozen for regular and $36/dozen for organic. If you want to use them snappi'd them I'd go for the large (brown edge), which are $35 or $40/dozen. We prefer to snappi and T's been in larges since about 20 lbs. She's 25 lbs now and they actually fit better because her thighs have slimmed down. T is chunky but I doubt we'll ever need the XL prefolds. Those are only needed if baby remains SUPER chunky until PTing. I have some of both regular and organic and I don't notice a difference except that the organic ones take a bit longer before they reach maximum absorbency. I swear though, you can use them straight out of the package and their absorbency is better than ANY other diaper.
Awesome thanks so much for the info ladies. I am definatly going to check those out.
Our new house has hard water, so there's a softener which makes it test as soft. We only had to strip every few months but her diapers have been smelling awful lately so I'm going to get some sposies and strip them yet again and try using biokleen or vinegar to get the stink out.
I haven't used snappis on Em yet but I think she might be better in them for overnights/long periods because the whole issue with G's was when the insert would bunch it would irritate her. I knew those prefolds were too much! Soft as your favorite tee shirt but so pricey!
My GMDs are soft as a worn-in T-shirts! It takes a few washes but they're down right luxurious now. I swear there is no reason to fear the lower cost. In no way are you compromising quality. In fact, I would argue that they're better than any prefold out there.
