fitted vs prefolds?
I've been doing a little research. I am sewing my own diapers and covers with sewing kits/parts from Home page - Wazoodle.
I'm concerned about using the fitted diapers with a cover. Will it be too bulky? That would mean two elastics, one on the fitted, one on the cover.
Or would pre-folds plus the cover be smaller?
This is the fitted diaper I'm making:
Little Green Bear (LGB) Precision Cut Diaper Kit
The cover I am going to make using the same pattern, but buy the pre-cut PUL and pre-cut liner, and just sew it the same. But I'm concerned that it will be too much...
Am I nuts? They do offer tuckable kits as well... would this be easier:
Little Green Bear (LGB) Tuckables
The PUL blanks can be bought in the Bamboo fitted pattern or in a Tuckable cover pattern. Both seem similar though.
Thoughts? Or should I get a few of each and try them out? I was hoping to sew as many before baby arrives as possible, but I don't want to make too many of one kind and then turn out that I hate them.
I don't think fitteds are any bulkier than PFs--you're really getting the same layering either way, just with a PF you're using a snappi to hold it and with a fitted you're using sewn in snaps or velcro. I wouldn't worry about that aspect. If anything, I think fitteds are actually LESS bulky overall.
Those tuckables are new to me...they look pretty cool, but I will say that with runny EBF NB poop we definitely did best with maximum coverage (no trifolding for infants!!!) so I would think sticking with your original plan will be best :)
(You're going to make the cover slightly bigger than the fitted, though, right? You want it to ENCLOSE the diaper, not match up with it...)
Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. With pre-folds I would have to get some snappis or something to make them work. I just thought the double elastic for the fitted and the cover would be too much.
I have to check the covers and see if the pre-cuts are bigger or not. I have three PUL blanks I bought to play around with in the size medium. I'm going to guess they are the same size as the medium fitted pattern though, as you can use them to make AIOs using the medium kit.
In that case...should I not make any small covers and maybe just make medium covers to cover the small diapers and large covers to cover the medium diapers? Would that make sense?
I was going to make an order of 12 of the small diapers next for sewing. My nephew is 3 months old, maybe my SIL will let me test a few on him for size after I sew them and wash them? That way I can see how the medium cover fits over the small diaper before I make any...
If you can test, I think that would be best! I haven't actually sewn my own, so I can't tell you for sure...what you suggested makes sense to me, though. ..
Yeah I think prefolds and fitted are similar in bulkyness, some fitteds may be slightly trimmer than prefolds. Not sure the sizing of the covers you are making, but I used small covers for the newborn stage. But my LO was 6lbs 7oz when born and he wore newborn sized diapers for about 8 weeks. Some he used longer.
You could always make a couple of the fitteds and then if you didn't like them you could buy prefolds, they are fairly cheap, you can also use prefolds as doublers in other diapers as baby grows.
I used GM fitted diapers and it was just as bulky as prefolds. The only nice thing about fitted is that if they have their own snaps or Velcro you don't have to have an extra part (snappi).
